This is a directory intended to help the sizable EU community on Balmung find each other. By European RP, I mean RP that takes place in the European "Primetime"/Peak, usually the evening and early night. In rough american timezone terms it happens somewhere between 2PM EST and 6PM-8PM EST. For the various lists, these tags may be used: EU: A company/linkshell that operates primarily in the EU prime-time EU-Friendly: A linkshell/FC that recognizes and tries to include it's EU-based members. EU/NA: A company/linkshell that is a great mix of EU and NA players. If you want a Free Company included in the list, please send me a PM or reply to this thread. FC List EU: Jackal & Hide EU: Drunken Moogle EU/NA: Aeon EU/NA: The Mythril Blades EU-Friendly: Crystalline EU-Friendly: Order of Ouroboros EU-Friendly: Hiraeth - Contact: Amaya Naeuri EU/NA: The Drakensguard - Contact: Von'ni Sayomi Linkshell List EU: Balmung EU Players EU: Europa EU-Friendly: Rendezvous of Stars EU/NA: Hugs & Cake Discords: - Balmung EU Events Discord. Find the link in this post. Recurring Events list: Sunny Seaside Bar - Once a month, Sundays. For an overview of weekly events, check out the Balmung EU Tumblr. Here is a time converter you can use for figuring out those pesky time zones. Finally, feel free to fill out the following template in a reply to this thread. That way people may contact you for RP and connections. Contact Template: Main Character's Name: Alts: Brief descriptions and/or links to any Wiki's: Usually online between: Intensity: (Light/Medium/Heavy or New/Experienced, whatever floats your boat.)

Anything goes really. My FC has a bar in the basement that is open.. Well, almost every night, but we do themed nights every thursday. It varies with how many people attend it, but it's been fun thus far. A christmas/starlight themed party might be fun ^^

Beyond measurements and that, I've noticed words like anyroad (instead of anyway), fortnight (instead of 2 weeks), mayhaps (instead of maybe), pray tell/ pray do.. Generally there's an old english sorta feel to it. So if you want to add that kind of flair onto it you could probably look up more of those words - just don't overdo it Most of the time I forget to use them, though anyroad is becoming more of a habit. Also, in regards to ageing, I seem to remember mister loredev on the panel say that whilst the races can live for long, doing so is rather difficult to achieve because a lot of things in Eorzea is out to do you in, even when you're not a heroic type. Such as Calamity falling down on everyone, pirates, thieves, murderers, corruption and wildlife that could rival Australia. So potentially one could say that seeing an old person walking about might be somewhat rare or that people might respect old people, because they lived through a lot.

I have created events in the past but I am fresh out of ideas. I people I can mobilize to make a lot of things happen, though. What sort of events would be interesting to you?
-
Yes, something like that. But I was also thinking that people could let themselves be listed if they were open to RP and predominantly active in the EU Timezone, in a reply to the directory. And then the info about LS/FC'/Events etc could go in the OP. I reckon the biggest challenge with it would be getting the information, because not everyone advertises their stuff. Any help would be appreciated

Heya guys. Wasn't really sure where to put this, since it's more about the community side of the RP. So anyways, here goes. My general line of thought here is about visibility and knowledge about the fact that EU RP'ers generally speaking can be found on Balmung/Gilgamesh (Not sure on the latter) and I am wondering if there's anything one can do to improve on it. There's not a whole lot of big events in or near the EU timezone (They do happen, just not often), yet lot's of RP does seem happen in the EU timezone - There's my own FC, but also a chunk of other FC's that run like a half-and-half combination. However I do remember when I was new to XIV and had to figure out where RP'ers might be, finding that I had to pick a US server was a bit surprising - the communities of games I have RP'ed in before have always been divided into NA and EU, either because the game forced you to or because the community elected to have separate servers for the different parts of the world when selecting unofficial servers, or picking between a list of RP-tagged servers. Where as I went into it anyways, I could imagine it might be a turn-off for some people looking to play or RP in XIV, because they automatically assume there wont be RP when they're actually on. What I was fascinated about when I got into Balmung was the fact that I could log on at 7am in the morning if I wanted to, and find RP (by means of being proactive about it). Something that I believe I still could these days, though I tend to stay up rather than get up early. At the same time I could also find RP happening in the afternoon. Basically any time. I think it's something rather unique. There's also the issue of keeping connected with each other. The EU linkshell has been a help for some, though not everyone likes to be in linkshells and recently I personally haven't had the drive to actively advertise for the LS or do anything for it. So right now it just serves as a list of people, really. So I am wondering if there's anything we can do to make it seem a bit more attractive to people from the EU, personally I would love to see more EU rpers around both here and in game. Something that comes to mind is perhaps having some kind of directory for EU players in a thread here on the RPC, I would not be adverse to opening one and keeping it updated. But other than that I have no idea what could be done. So I thought maybe opening up a thread to talk about it could bring some ideas forth that could help, even if just a bit. Anyone? ^^

Not new to Balmung, not new to RP; new to Balmung RP

Unbeknownst to myself, I started on chats and IRC's in my native language. It was completely random, and I had /no/ idea people called it roleplay. To me at the time (I was probably about 14 or 15. That putting it to be about 10-11 years ago) roleplay was the stuff some people did out in the forests, cause we had a satirical song in the radio about that. I was still learning English at the time, and I had a break until one day after I got so sick-and-******-tired of progression raiding in WoW I made an escape alt on a different realm. I chose Steamwheedle Cartel (EU) because I had some acquaintances IRL who played there at the time. On my old realm it was very normal for me to lurk about on the realm forums for chatter and banter, so naturally I went exploring, and that's where I was first properly introduced to Roleplay in MMO's. During the "break" I had attempted to join a local pen-and-paper club because my mom was wanting me off the PC more, but it being an all-male club and me being an extremely socially awkward girl, I gave up on it after a couple of sessions. I was /quite/ surprised and instantly interested in what all of the guides had to say on the forum, so I read them all basically in one sitting. I spent aaaaaaaaages looking on the forum for a newbie-accepting RP guild, and they were all like "Must make a background" - So I fathomed a pen and promptly designed a backstory about a 19 year old Draenai that was raised by a bear. In the elever lands. (*CRINGE*) So during my IC interview they obviously declined me, and I had a whisper about checking out the game's lore (I honestly had no idea) and then I took contact to them later with a new attempt, and they offered me a second chance to prove my meddle in a relaxed social RP situation - Campfire by Lakeshire, fishing and just two people involved. After that, I was accepted in and promptly given a mentor. I like to consider my own start to this one of the big reasons why it's important to help newbies to the stage these days. If they hadn't offered me a second chance, I wouldn't be here today. I'd have been some bookworm somewhere. I also don't really hear about a lot of people who started out with MMO-RP, they always seem to come from non-online variants of it, so I'll be keeping an extra eye on what other people say to see if there might be anyone like me I was with that guild for about half a year to a year, and the RP was predominantly social themed. I met some other people via RP - One of them I still talk to and RP with in XIV now - who introduced me to evil/cult RP, which apparently was right up my alley because I got so addicted so fast, that I transferred over my ex-raiding character and just went completely into RP All in all I had 2-2½ years RP'ing in WoW, before moving on to Rift for the following 3 years, and I have hung about XIV since it's relaunch. Making it like 6 years in total, give-or-take. I love roleplay because it gives a whole other meaning to playing MMORPG's, without RP I would not be playing them still. I find it so enriching in a way I can't describe, I love writing - but I can't write short stories and novels and such. Roleplay is my main creative outlet these days. I love being inspired to make new characters, I laugh and cry with them and feel how they grow and develop with every step they take. I love when you get to the point with a character where it's not so much you playing them, but the character playing you - Because you have gotten a complete sense of understanding of their "ruleset", you can effectively see how they would react to certain situations and you can tell when something isn't logical for them to do - without questioning it or giving it second thought. To normal people it probably sounds like some kind of split personality disorder stuff, but I truly find it fascinating. It's just a whole bundle of fun, even when it's sad.

I age mine alongside RL time. It's easier, and stuff about time can get really complicated, so I like to keep it simple. However, when something big happens.. Like say.. Uh. Something changes politically, or some big evil guy is slain in the main scenario quests, I do not instantly take that info in icly - if at all. Like, some others may take things in on every patchday, but I like to wait before mentioning that my character heard about x and x, because my character isn't likely to know a lot of the things that happen. She can't read, so the only source of news she has about the world is through travelers, bars and the likes, and anyone who frequents bars would know to take stuff that's said there with a pinch of salt. So in that sense she's a few months behind on current events. Mind you, if something VERY big happens like I don't know a round two of Bahamut raining fire everywhere, that would obviously be taken in instantly. That said, my Main and my primary alt do not know when their namedays are, so I have nothing to icly mark them as being older. I tend to adjust Wiki's and profiles after the anniversary of the game.

Nailah/Sastra would be a red fox. Clever little hunters they are, very good at adapting to their surroundings.

I like to follow the lore as much as I can, but I also wont just take anything in. I do not like to involve game mechanics in my RP, and some pieces of lore that /clearly/ just exist to reason for a game mechanic (I'm talking the levels of lore-wise explaining the dutyfinder. Some games do that a lot. That kinda stuff) is stuff that I really just don't take in to effect. Some things needs more than just a flavor text in order for me to feel like I can properly take it into RP. I also do not follow the main storyline - Ie, my character isn't a hero of light and I do not believe that there's more than one person who goes through the job storylines, in line with what the lore-dev said during the panel. I refrain from involving big lore characters in my RP, and generally when it comes to quests and that I try my best to go "So what would this mean for a normal eorzean" instead of automatically assuming that everyone can do what people do in some quests. I think the latter also increasingly comes from the fact that I play very down-to-earth characters with no special powers as per se. Pretty much commoner-esque characters, my main is only just now learning how to fight with pointy things in a proper way (Being "pretty good in a bar brawl" doesn't cut it when someone wants to kill you specificly..) On top of that I like to keep my FC on the same page, so some of the controversial things I see in a certain way because my FC has been talking about how to see it and we've come to a general conclusion.

Highlanders has a very cool ponytail option. ... And then also when I read the lore about them I fell in love. But the first thing that made me decide was that hairstyle.

I try to go by the whole "Just because you potentially could, doesn't mean you should" sort of way. When it comes to small scale things I tend to take more liberties with the loopholes in the lore (That being the complete greyzones of that something hints at something but then nothing is clearly saying for or against a certain thing) because they are elements that only affect my character and maybe one or two more. On top of that, I never mention what these things are oocly to anyone else but the people involved, cause I know they're on board with jumping through the chosen loophole. I'd never take liberties like that with anything major, like, you wouldn't find one of my characters inventing a new branch of magic on the grounds of that there isn't anything saying that one couldn't. Elements used in fights go in the same box. World changing stuff and things that affect a lot of people - That's not my job, that's the lore-dev teams job, and if I wanted to do it I would have to find some way to get them to mention it in the worlds lore/history/whatever. To me stuff like that comes closer to being a style choice. If someone wants to reason everything with Aether, then that's their take on things. It's just very unfortunate when people go out and say "My take is the only right way" instead of just accepting that it's a take that doesn't fall in with everyone's style. I think FC's should always be on the same page internally, but getting a whole community to agree on the same thing is never going to happen. Some people like to be freespirited and have pet dragons, and other people like myself like to not do things that don't seem right with the setting/lore (To the point where if I find out I fucked up I will retcon/change things about to un-fuck it.) So to me you can't reason everything with Aether, and there's a line somewhere.

Welcome aboard I do know of roleplayers on other servers, though not specifically Excalibur Depending on how brave you are, you can also put up a search topic on the forums for your server on the lodestone forums.

I don't know about you guys, but sometimes the game doesn't leave me when I go to bed because I end up dreaming about it. I once managed to wake myself up because I was dreaming about missing the weekly cap before the weekly reset, got up to do it and then went back to bed again I have also had dreams about roleplay related stuff, though that almost always tends to go blurry so I only really remember that some peoples characters were involved. So, yous had any dreams involving XIV in some way?

I mostly hang about my FC's house, sometimes I brave a trip to the Quicksand or similar. Though, more often than not I am sleeping when a lot of the RPC is awake and RP'ing. Timezones are lovely that way ^^

Worth it because I have that wanting to be the very best mentality.. Even if I do trundle along at a much slower rate than everyone else

Way too much time later, I am now finally a 4 star Weaver. I'm still working on my melds, but with the help of food buffs I can reach the stuff to make NQ stuff, so if you're wanting a craft done for looks then I can now do that. Bring mats including crystals, and then tips are appreciated though not needed. I reckon I spent about 5 million on this because I geared up before getting my last two book-turn thingies into HQ.. But so worth it.

Whilst I do not tend to use end-game sets IC'ly (It just wouldn't make sense for my lvl 50 characters to wear armor as such) when I see it on others I presume it's a replica or a look-a-like. I figure that if some armor has become popular in tales and so on, it wouldn't be too far fetched to think that weavers, leatherworkers etc might use it as fashion inspiration. If I was to use it icly, I would probably note some minor differences in my wiki/fc descriptions of my character, such as many it's not made out of 100% the same materials as the original version, there might be some design changes etc. It's an approach I'd use on just about anything that comes from an origin that heavily hints/states that there's only one set in the whole world, or a very limited amount of them. I can't answer for myself on the note of problems, but I have seen debates unfold in both FC-chat and linkshells about it, usually because someone sees someone else in it and wonder the same thing you're wondering. I reckon when it comes to the relic weapons is where I have seen the most OOC discussions about.

As a highlander, I frequently use the starting top. It mixes well with the level 50 LTW legs, cause you can dye the legs to match the leathery bit on the top. And as for other low-level things I use all the time, the sandals. I think they go as low as level 7-10 ish or so. Love them ^^

Welcome! You can read the naming conventions here: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/491-Lore (Stickied topics in the top) The naming conventions basically give a bit more culture/character to the various races, just like there's a difference between common names in for example scandinavia compared to africa or so. For some of the races their name indicates their social standing or something they have achieved in life etc. It's always a good idea to read them and get a gist of it, but there are ways to deviate from the naming conventions if you just can't think of a name that fits in.
