What's something nobody expects your character to be/do?
Maril replied to Unnamed Mercenary's topic in Fun Prompts
For Sastra, it can sometimes seem very odd for her to make the choices that she does. She cares a whole lot about her own survival, and though she hasn't actually killed any person (yet), if it came down to it and she felt like it's an either-or situation, she will find a way ^^ Which no one really expects because she tends to come across your friendly neighborhood tradeswoman. I guess something else that can be a bit surprising is that she doesn't feel obligated to fight if Ala Mhigo was to be attempted recovered, which tends to be on every Highlander's agenda - Rather she sees herself to be among those who would follow a success like that, with the intention of getting things in working order once more. With the highlanders history of war and "conflict in their blood" this has definitely surprised some people. -
I always suspected that these things here at nanawa mines were toilets for tiny people: http://puu.sh/bWrCj/19d60b6f90.jpg Maybe they removed that part of the anatomy? I mean they seem to have no problem with removing eyebrows and nipples..... D:

I definitely think that 1.0 lore needs to be filtered out somehow, or at the very least be sectioned so that it's very apparent that it is dated lore. Some of it might still be valid (or even fill in voids), but I imagine there is a lot of changes to - and this IS 2.0 we are playing, so naturally that should be the focus. In terms of spoilers, I think a big fat disclaimer on the "front page" of the wiki should be all there is on it. Because at the end of the day, there's a lot of things that could be spoiled, but in order to explain something or involve somethings history (ie. garleans) you kind of have to spoil it. I think it would be a waste of time if we have to sit and hide individual things that are spoilers, might as well just let people know what to expect and be done with it. As for validation, I would say having two people sign off on it would be a-okay, but perhaps lower it to just one if there are screenshots in the sources? That way you essentially just need to have one person validate that the screenshots are valid and not of someones cat. One thing came to mind, how about proofreading and such? Despite being pretty fluent in English, I still make some grammatical errors. Is it something to think about when validating something or should we just let people fix the errors as they get discovered?

Poking for interest. A "Come dine with me"- esque event?
Maril replied to Maril's topic in Chronicled Events
Will happily make it a thing if more people show interest -
As an FC leader, I must admit it gets harder and harder to teach people the basics of roleplay, and uphold a level of quality in the FC that you can be completely happy with. I don't exactly know how to put the right words on to what I am experiencing, but it's almost as if "Newer" roleplayers increasingly refuses to accept the rules for what they are - but rather they debate them, question them, and ignore them at will if they do not agree with them. I was a TERRIBLE roleplayer when I started out some 5-6 years ago, and I was literally told "This is not how you do that. THIS is how you do it!" over and over on so many areas through my learning experience (I joined a guild where I had a mentor) and I -never- questioned the stuff they were telling me. I fully recognized it was not alright for me to question why, because -I- was the new player and -they- had the experience, so what they told me had to be the right stuff. I have failed people from our trial because they refused to accept what we were teaching them, something that happens on a semi-regular basis. If I had to point out a "group" where I see this from, it is from roleplayers who are new to MMORPG-RP, but have anywhere from 5-15 years of experience with other ways of roleplaying, or written media. This is why I always flinch a bit when someone says they've done pen and paper for 15 years - I suddenly doubt if they are willing to acknowledge that things are different here. And whilst stuff like IC/OOC is a thing across all of the variants of RP ever, there are some things from other variants that aren't used here. And then it's that whole thing with (and I know not everyone is like this) when people say they're been Rping (as a general term, not specific to mmorpgs) for 15 years and then I say "Oh, I've done it for 5-6 years" then the reaction I tend to get is more of a "Oh she's a wee little runt!" rather than "This person is telling me not to do (thing), I should listen". So more and more I tend to assume that people are new to RP regardless of if the have done pnp for x amount of years, if they just started out in mmorpg-rp. An argument I see a lot when people want to justify anything from severely breaking the lore, to breaking these common rules of RP, and so on is that "They just do what is fun". And as much as I want to admire peoples desire to have fun, I just. Egh. I need a gif to illustrate how I feel about that but I can't find one. I guess I just take things more seriously? Not to mean that I don't have fun, I have fun everyday, but I follow the rules like I always have. The rules are why we all tend to get along, why back in older games I didn't have to question if I wanted to RP with the person next to me because they seemed a wee bit too far into the light end. And it's not because I don't like light-rpers, but when they ignore the lore it becomes more near impossible, because I -do- follow the lore and if my character acknowledges their stuff then I would not follow the lore. Ack! And when they take ooc as IC? I just want to run. I do not mean to double-cross players, but it is something my character sort of maybe does now and then. Because she is not a nice girl. These days I can't even be in the quicksand without encountering something I have to assume didn't happen, like people teleporting into dungeons mid-rp. What the actual ;_; Anyhow, rambling aside. I do feel inspired enough to see if I can compile a little something for my FC on the subject, a forum post or so. Just to increase the awareness.

I may have been exposed to too much BBC lifestyle, but I got thinking and I think one could potentially do something like it in RP. It would have to be limited in how many could partake (I would suggest 4 or 5) but the basic idea would be that you take 4-5 strangers that sign up for this, and they then in turn host a dinner party (Consisting of a 3 course meal + entertainment) and then I suppose there could be a sort of judge/commentator (Maybe one who'd like to write a little thing about what happened for the forums?) to collect scores. And then when each participant had hosted an event, then votes would be counted up and the one who did it the best gets a price. I think it would be a good event for meeting strangers and maybe walking away with a friend (or mortal enemy, all depending) The challenge in it would be to get all 4-5 people to show up consistently at each others dinner-party event which would be complicated by the timezones. But if for example there were 4 participants, one could do it over fri/sat in two weekends, perhaps early-ish in the evening/ late afternoon to make it a little more friendly for EU people like myself. Something like 4-5PM EST would be a good start time for me. As for locations, peoples own houses (if they have one), an FC room or even an FC house would be good - I'd be willing to lend my own house out for the occasion, for people who don't have any of those options. So, what do you guys think? Good idea or have I positively gone crazy and need to stop watching BBC lifestyle?

Does your character have any unfair Bias or Discrimination?
Maril replied to Kage's topic in Character Workshop
Sastra has a disliking for most Lalafell. It stems from the majority of the ones she has met being bratty, hyperactive and annoying little naive #¤¤%%¤. One of them went out of her way to stalk Sastra to apologize in her own special way because she had upset Sastra and then concluded she had to become happy again, when a simple apology did not do the trick, she asked about for advice on how to ungrumpy people. And someone suggested that people in love never seem to be grumpy. So she went out to find the nearest "Tall person" and basically went "Hi person, this is Sastra, do you want to be her boyfriend?" That lalafell in particular was nicknamed Tiny Terror. Though there are lalafells in the Kindred that Sastra likes and approves of, curiously they are also the ones that appear to act more mature So I think the TL;DR of this is: Sastra does not like annoying lalafells. -
I want in! As stated before, willing to help out where I can but lore hunting /writing things down is probably more an area where I can be useful, as I am by no means savvy with wiki editing, I /barely/ got the templates put on for my characters wikipages I can also assist in brainstorming for topics (I already have a long list). I would have to read some guides. I probably should regardless.

Sounds like a good idea I'd be up for it, with what time I can pour into it, if the thing gets up and running ^^

Wikia is a bunch of derp. Trying to find a way of putting it. Like, it would be nice if there could be a way of marking things as fanon or things that are generally accepted by roleplayers, but not documented in lore - Maybe because the lore falls short, and one has to make a realistic assumption of how something might be. Would it be possible to make citations that involve a picture of for example a quest NPC? Because quests can only be done once, and at certain points, so it would be a bit egh if people felt they had to do the quest to make sure. And on the subject of quest NPC's, what about noting potential bias? Like the bad feelings going between little ala mihgo npc and the flames stationed there (Flames people be like: "Ayup we give them food" and the highlanders there are like "WE ARE STARVING!!") I think other than that some common sense rules would do well. Alternatively instead of having it open for everyone to edit, you could look into letting people sign up for the task? Though that kinda depends on the system I guess.

Unfortunately, I do not know any lore databases. I don't think anything has been written beyond on the various wiki's. Within my own FC, on our forums, we are beginning to write down all of the lore we can get our hands on, both in and out of game, but right now we're only 3-4 people writing on it occasionally and it's not open to the public (Because we make footnotes for how we take certain things in our FC, make references to plots where something has been used, etc). And unfortunately we haven't gotten to those subjects, otherwise I'd have pm'ed you what we have. I do think it'd be a good idea if there was to be written a lore database for XIV, but it requires a lot of people and a willingness to run alts through quests to get snippets of knowledge. If the community was to come together on making something like that, one could even add things like commonly accepted fanon etc, which might give people a feel of the wiggleroom they have with plots? Just a thought. If something like it already exists then I too would like a link. Though, if you're fine with having people tell you what they know, you could always post the questions here and see if there's someone who knows what you want to know?

So this is something I occasionally have talked about with others, I find it interesting to hear peoples answers. Imagine that there wasn't any internet, or that there were not any mmorpgs, what would you be doing instead? For me, I'd probably be a book-club person and read way into the night. I do still read, but not nearly as much as I did before we got proper internet at home. That and if the internet was to completely disappear, I'd move in to the nearest library because I wouldn't feel good about not being able to google my random questions.

Personal Housing ver2.1: Apartment Edition
Maril replied to Warren Castille's topic in FFXIV Discussion
If anyone needs a place to hold a meeting or if they need to rent a room for the night or.. Other things I guess? Then I have a house in the shroud which is more of an IC investment for Sastra than a place where she wants to take up residence. As such the idea of renting it out for a night or days depending is pretty attractive and feasible ^^ Some of Sastra's family uses the house, however primarily doing EU times and certainly not every day, so something can probably be worked out I'm more than willing to help people get a place to have their RP. -
I find that this is used a lot for new-to-the-universe people because it is one of the best ways of getting away with not reading all of the "essential" lore before you start RP'ing and allows for more learning-on-the-fly. I guess it might be cliché but its not the worst one Otherwise for the topic.. - Using aether to see because of complete or partial blindness seems to be very common, personally I find it a bit shifty. - As some other mentioned, when someone makes their characters sexuality the main point of their character - Race/gender changes, again also already mentioned - Characters that have so much edge that you might cut yourself on it, also fairly common - Split personality was very common in another game I used to play, yet to see it be done here. - Characters that defy any sense of authority, be it the police or the leader of a group they voluntarily joined for not other reason than "Because and that's why" I'm very guilty of being an orphan with parent that had a tragic and untimely death. This is very interesting. I used to be quite the booknerd in my teens and I remember quite well how I'd sometimes end up bringing bits of the book to the outside world. Mostly through my mood though. I still read books, but not quite as many as I used to, managed to read a series of books once where I was outright heartbroken for a week because one of the characters I loved ended up dead, and then after that I had trouble picking up any other book because I just wanted more of that universe ._. Though when it comes to RP, the way I experience the bleed through is from me and to the character rather than the other way around, so sometimes what I think is right becomes my characters way of thinking... But then again, it could just be fiction lag stemming from my character (and/or past characters)? Hmm. I need a cup of tea and a ponder.

It's iffy for me cause its on a Sunday, but I will see if I can make it for a few hours cause I had great fun last time ^^ -
I regard the Fantasia potion as an OOC player service - The fact that you can't even obtain it from anywhere in the game, but have to go onto a website and pay -real moneys- kind of speaks volumes. I also think justifying it kind of makes race change completely not a big deal which it really should be, there's so many ways beyond your random adventurer that a very drastic appearance change (such as a racechange) can be abused for, I mean you could infiltrate things and con people till the end of their days. That to me is something of such a big magnitude that, if the Fantasia did exist then surely we'd be hearing about it some more via NPC's and the likes. Also, I have seen the "My friends accidentally spiked my drink with this and now I am a (insert other race here) forever, very tragic" a bazillion times. No offense to those who went that way, but it just strikes me as a bit silly ._. So for what it is, I completely ignore the Fantasia icly. I'm with Aya on the notion that you want to do a race-change, find another loophole that is more interesting to jump through. Or reroll the character - you can namechange by transferring servers, it's expensive but you're already paying for the Fantasia, so.

I LOVE IT! Thank you so very much

For my part, I stick to the classes for reference and pretty much do not consider the jobs to be something accessible to roleplay with the exception of the ones that have the very obvious loopholes. it's a lot less confusing and honestly, I don't see the point in having a character that is so powerful that they're basically up there in a league of heroes. Give a character some thraumaturgy powers and I'm positively sure they'd be able to kill a bandit or whatever they feel like throwing stuff at. In Sastra's case though, she doesn't even have a class. Her combat experiences consists of occasionally punching her way through a brawl, and beyond that she can use a bow for hunting purposes (Not so efficient against people). I guess what I'm trying to say is that sure, there's some jobs you can play and some jobs that would make my character look at you a little weirdly (not to be confused with not wanting to RP with this person, generally speaking I'll always reserve the right for my character to think people are weird, in order to keep the RP flowing), but you don't HAVE to be a very powerful job class thingy in order to have fun, the regular classes do the same thing just as well. So why put yourself up for the hassle? But you know, everyone has their preferred cup of tea.

I have four characters that are IC, one that I use for npc purposes and a nameholder. Chiming in with that it's pretty normal to have alts. My alts that I roleplay all have a line of priority, obviously my main gets the most attention, and then my first prio alt gets the secondmost time, third one gets a bit less, etc. So my 4th alt is one that I only play "now and then" - perhaps once a week, but to compensate for her lack of a presence I have worked her in so that she can do a lot of stuff off-screen and the people she is close to can be free to assume to some extend what she has been doing recently, and then I just roll with it when she's getting played next. I only ever involve my main and my second alt in plots as well because the other two do not get time enough. In terms of levels, my second alt is the only one I levelled all the way up to 50, the others are either bang on 15 or somewhere slightly above that. I think it's very good that you let the characters be separated, I personally am against too much main-to-alt contact because it can be abused in great ways to the point of basically being an excuse for metagaming.

Welcome ^^ Looking forward to seeing your plans.
