I have to agree with this. Whatever you do, don't padjal. I can't really comment on the rest of your stuff because I kinda got a bit confused by it. Simplifying may be something to consider, there's a lot of stuff you can do without making things too complicated

How Does Your Character View Names?
Maril replied to Unnamed Mercenary's topic in Character Workshop
Sastra will accept that people are sometimes called odd things, but if they're something that clearly sounds like a nickname or not the persons actual name, she can get a little suspicious of that characters intents - if they do not want to give away their name it may suggest they do not want to be identified, which could mean all sorts of trouble like about-to-get-stabbed or secretly-running-away-from-people-with-knives. Of course it could also not mean any trouble at all, but in her mind it's better to be a little too cautious than a little too dead. Also, if someone has a complicated name (So, a whole lot of them roes) she may give them nicknames of herself, even though she just met them. It makes it easier for herself to remember who they are, and occasionally provides for some laughs and interesting situations. Herself, Sastra isn't her true name - but not out of her own will, she was put in an orphanage before she could yet say her own name properly, and so they named her Sastra. It's only within the past six months that she has managed to reconnect with siblings and thus figured out her birthname. Though she still introduces herself as Sastra, when anyone asks, meaning that only people who know her well and her siblings call her by her original name. It may change in time, it may not ^^ -
I would never move, there's absolutely no point in it. The ping isn't bad unless you're competitively raiding or have a very bad connection and I have not met many rp'ers who raid -that- much. Balmung has RP 24/7 pretty much because people have tossed the regional ties and it's something at least I have never seen before. Why confine ourselves to a future as a small community when we can be a part of a big one on Balmung? Even if we're not up for the events, things are still pretty good here imo. If anything we should be doing more to promote that RP happens on Balmung also for the EU'ers (no idea if Gilgamesh have a EU community, if so we should promote both) so people don't end up isolating themselves on a small eu server.

At the current moment of writing, Europa has 30 slots left. Catch a silver star in-game if you want an invite!

The Europa Linkshell doesn't have an inactivity issue by the by. Just felt like I needed to state that, in case anyone is reading this debate as a "Woah things are dead everywhere dude". We do a linkshell-shift to prune inactive members and make space for new ones once every 3 months to keep having space, with frequent pokes for RP going about as it should be, and chatter in between. One thing that any broad RP linkshell/FC/whatever would face, in my eyes, is that different people want different types of RP, spreading both across the light-heavy scale and the various settings, like bar rp, action rp, romantic rp and so on. So, sometimes someone might offer something they think is awesome, but there's perhaps only 5 people in total that's interested in that particular thing, and maybe two of those are shy and don't dare actually speaking up. I can see how that could lead someone to think, if I'm in a linkshell with 100 people, why am I only getting response from 3? And the same thing in turn can make people think like, "I'm in a linkshell with 100 people but no one is ever offering something I want to do". I'm not shy of stating that there's some RP'ers I can't see myself RP'ing with because they do not take the lore as much to heart as I am, and their perception of things would negatively impact my character (leading to ye olde "This person must be insane" conclusions being passed about), and it's not cause I want to be Queen Mean, but it's just how it is - as well as it's not everything I can get my characters involved in due to their skillsets/habits/moveability etc. So but anyways, because EU timezone players are a minority anywhere, I think it's more visible within our groupings. How you tackle that, I don't know, I don't really think you can/should - but maybe it could help a bit on the feeling of things to know what could be a consequence of the many style choices of RP.

So far in my 5-year RP career I've retired 3 main characters in games I continued to play for a while yet, and a small host of alts and characters that were abandoned in games I did not continue to play, such as GW2 and SWTOR. For two of them, it was the clear sensation of that they had run their course. There just was no saving them, and both of them died as a result of the plots they were involved in. One of them got so "evil" that she had gone utterly insane, and as a result she was more reckless with her public appearances, making her self traceable in the end. We had a very nice event where a group of five adventurers found her hideout and there was a 3-4 hour fight, resulting in hers and one of the attackers death. It felt right to do, at the time, and I have never since regretted it - I had played that character for 1½ years. The second one happened after some 2-and-a-something-months after I had created her, and for her it was a mix of not being able to advance her further - She was at and beyond her peak, and also to do story justice, because of her crimes of neutrality (In a setting where being neutral between factions is like being evil) and just out right crimes against other people had her as a desirable target to kill for any bounty hunters and go-happy heroes. Sometimes I regret the way that I sent her off, but I do not regret that I chose to do it. So anyways, I'm very much in the belief that characters can run their course, and I also think it's important to do something about it before you taint the good memory of that character. Death may not always be the right option though, and if you're doing it in a game where you intend to keep on playing, I would recommend running an alt into position first so as to make the shift more effortless and natural - regardless of if the character is going to die or disappear. But you need to be as sure as you can be before you do it, if possible have that "time is right" feeling with you, and once you do it, be sure to do it right - Plan as best as you can, and try not to leave unintentional plotholes for people to stare at. Oh, and to add.. In my experiences it's something that doesn't occur too often. If it does there may be something else causing the problem. And I'm sure there are many characters out there that can last far longer than mine have

I actually managed to read news first there a couple of times, and also all of the stuff about the page moving about I'd probably never have seen if they hadn't been on the front page. So, for what it's worth I think it should return so we can at least see somewhat important stuff there ^^ It's just a bit easier than checking the news section.

One thing that was mentioned in the other thread was the point of people being a lot in the quicksand and not so much in the other city states, as opposed to earlier times where the other city states were used more. And I feel like I must make a point to say that not everyone enjoys RP'ing in the quicksand, and the other adventurers guild hubs, because they are filled with PvE'ers (Nothing against the bulk of them) which is something I personally find very distracting because of the scale of it. In other games you have inns that aren't massive questhubs and as such aren't too filled, but in this game there's just -so many people- and what worse is, not all of them are happy to leave RP'ers alone. Just the last time I was in Gridania's adventurers guild rping on an alt, me and my friends ended up putting an rp-troll on ignore. And that's not to mention the copious amounts of ability spamming, and the !"#¤%& YOU MISUNDERSTAND. HELLO. YOU CAN HAVE THIS. YOU MISUNDERSTAND. SENPAIII. #"¤%# quest they decided to implement. For me it just very quickly becomes too much to overcome and allthough I like the city states, I find myself fleeing to the housing areas and other open world locations. As I understand I'm not the only one struggling to get my immersion and pretend skills up into that gear. And then I would really wish that people stopped assuming that housing areas = worst thing ever, my FC for example love to get visits there and we openly invite people to our bar twice a week. I really wish S.E would let us move free of charge so that we could bundle the RP Fc's with houses in each area together. But anyways the point is that if you keep saying that certain areas are like the sausage of death for RP, you manifest a problem that isn't necessarily there and indirectly make sure that the FC's that are there do not get visits from the people who heard it was bad/dead/inactive/etc. One thing is to say you simply dot prefer it (like me with the quicksand) another is to make it sound like people should never ever go there. I'm not aiming at anyone specifically but it's something I often see come up in chats around and about. Otherwise, people do what they do. I'd have loved to partake in the last spooky thing, but unfortunately I passed out about the time it started. Timezones, yay -.-

So.. Some of you may know that I am the leader of KinRP (The Kindred, though carrying the FC name of The Clandestine), we've been here for soon to be a year and we've gone through a bit of everything. How exactly it happened, I do not know, but what I do know is that we stand with a pretty refined concept and 40 active RP'ers (based on a log in per 7 days check) that really just want to get out there and do stuff. Especially with other people, for whilst we sorted ourselves out we have managed to neglect the part of the plan where we make friends with others. For those who do not know us, we're an FC that is mostly active during the EU times, but we have a good deal of Americans with us as well that we love to bits. Our concept is that of a company that has branched into a few things, mainly in trade, mercenary work and the branch of the service-minded. As such we have everything from chefs, barmaids, all-purpose-lalafells and muscle. We also host two barnights a week in the EU primetime, and we have our house in the Goblet. As you might be able to guess, our RP varies with what people want to do. There's tavern/house RP, personal RP, action based RP.. But we've a hard time finding ways to incorporate others. We've hosted a few server wide events before with great success, though I have no ideas for one such at the moment. This is a problem we've had since pre-housing areas, so please do not bring up that arguement - at the end of the day, it's not the location but the people there that makes things awesome, and calling the housing areas out as desolate isolated holes only manifests a problem that wasn't there before. Really what we truly need is some people that could foresee some good interactions between us, whether it's work-based or social based doesn't really matter. I've made a post in the event's section a little while back explaining what KinRP can offer, though from that we've only got one event lined up for TheFutureTM. We are the most active from 20 BST and onwards into the night, I've forgotten what it converts into again but I know it's a bit early. That's also why I suspect a large part of why we're facing difficulties with finding people - Because they're simply not on and rping when we are. Regardless I would like to reach out to -anyone- who might think us compatible - feel free to ask questions here as well, then we can work out of timezones will be a problem or not And any general advice is also welcome ^^

It could also just be a person who never managed to get in contact with any EU fc's and such, I neither advertise for the EU LS or my FC in the general chats anymore because the EU LS fills up with people that come to this site and my FC is big enough (and still receives applications now an again). So I guess being a new player and finding the information, especially if one doesn't use the RPC here, can be a challenge that then causes some people to move away again. Unfortunately it's a bit of a tough one to fix, even if we were to actively talk about it in shout and such I think we'd miss people still.

I would be interested on an OOC level, though I have no experience with the EX primals at all. I'm the type that can read a guide and get the basic idea, but other than that I learn by doing. I've not done the EX primals because Balmung has a real lack of learning parties and I don't really want to queue for 30 mins as a dps and then get yelled at for being a bad in the roulette, so.. If you're doing something do let me know. I'm a EU player so I'm usually online during the day/evening over here. Edit: I have BLM (ilevel 100) and SMN (ilevel 99) to play with.

Some minor tweaks to the OP, we're still very much interested in hearing from people

It's news to me that EU players are leaving Balmung as per se, I've actually experienced an increase in people that contact me and ask about the conditions on Balmung because they're considering moving their main over. And the EU LS currently consists of some 80-or-so active people, which I consider a healthy size considering that EU RP'ers will always be of a smaller scale regardless of where they go. I think WoW might still be the only place where the EU RP community isn't exactly small, though I haven't played that for 3~years. The EU LS doesn't have people that specificly plan events because it's intended as a LF-RP linkshell, but we do see events advertised now and then - My FC is for example having two barnights/week currently and we host larger events whenever we get the right ideas, always in the EU primetime. To that extend if you have an idea for an event and were to ask for help with it in the EU LS I'm sure people would toss you at least some feedback (provided that you do it at the right time, mind) I think it is as it always is with RP - You need to make the right connections, and sometimes you have to be a little more pro-active with the approach, I guess. I greatly enjoy the fact that there seems to be 24/7 RP on Balmung, and in the weekends I tend to try and get a few energydrinks down to see the light and the RP events of the early mornings. As for PvE, I wouldn't be of much help since I do not raid - my FC is building a secondary coil team (nothing too serious) for the weekend-morning hours, like 9AM ish BST, though im not sure what they need. Lynna Greene is the one you should talk to if you want to know more.

I follow the bit of lore that has already been linked, and all of my characters have some sort of restriction when it comes to teleportation. I also exclusively do it by an aetheryte, paying a tip to some invisible guards. Most of my characters can't do it a lot - My main can do it once a week, where as two of my three alts can't do it at all and the third could do it more frequently but he severely doesn't like it. For the characters that can't do it, I have taken the liberty to allow them to be teleported by someone else (again near an aetheryte) whilst also having them wear an aether-enhancing piece of jewelry. I also don't think anything the character isn't wearing can be teleported - Ie you can't just teleport 1x adventurer complete with chocobo & wagon. I've experienced a few times where someone just teleports away right in front of me, and I honestly can't say I'll ever take that seriously. Even if it was completely lore viable, it strikes me as one of those things that are too OP for an RP'er to be able to do, as they could then basically teleport out of all trouble ever.

I have won several junior championships local to Denmark (Including the Danish Championship), and placed fourth in the Nordic championships, in Archery. I shot with the compound bow until I was about 17, where I saw myself forced to quit the sport due to life and an old arm injury preventing me from progressing any further. My first choice class for most MMORPG's is always anything that wields a bow ^^ But I often end up playing something else. Oh, and the arm injury I got when I was 12, when a horse decided to let me over the jump first and I decided to soften my landing on the ground with my elbow. Three surgeries and a 14-stitch surgical scar - Can't recommend trying that.

With common courtesy kept in mind (Such as first-come first serve and respecting people doing plots in open world locations), I'm pretty sure unless you're stood in someone's FC house, no one else can really tell you to (as in, order you to) scram from a location. Most of the time, RP'ers just don't have that IC power, law-enforcement types excluded. If it happens again tell them to mind their own cup of tea ^^

City-wide RP plots (split from Limsa Lominsa RP Connections)
Maril replied to FreelanceWizard's topic in RP Discussion
I feel the urge to re-point out that I didn't follow nor read more than the OP of the other thread, I've just read the stuff in this thread. My response is related to a scenario that is big, ie where all of the everything got poisoned, or all of the everything caught fire, or maybe a second calamity hit an area the size of ul'dah - I used that as an example since from what I can tell this happened in the event that this thread stems from. It might not be true for THAT event, I don't know (as I also pointed out in my reply). So please don't get all sorts of offended, if your plot didn't do that then that's all good and happy, but I felt this topic would be suited to air the notion that I tend to follow which is don't do something that'd be forced down on everyone's heads. Regardless if it's been blown out of proportions you can't blame people for expressing their opinion to what they think went on, all you can do is just tell them in a respectful matter what actually happened. -
City-wide RP plots (split from Limsa Lominsa RP Connections)
Maril replied to FreelanceWizard's topic in RP Discussion
I agree with Freelance on this one. I've always personally had the standpoint that, if you make a plot you have to try to make it pan out in a way that wouldn't overly impact the setting, but just the people involved in the plot - this doesn't compromise the fun for me, and it encourages me to try and be more creative. By affecting the setting, I mean something that would pretty much be talked about in the next patch in some random quest somewhere, because it had that kind of magnitude that there -would- be npc's talking about it - and we don't really impact the people who write the quests or the lore or anything. I mean, just look at what happened in the Lightning event, there were paparazzi from every city state. In the event of Ul'dah experiencing a severe attack, I'd imagine the other city states would react somehow, maybe by sending over some representatives and such, or even from the people's point of view with help organizations. It just wouldn't go un-noticed. What happens when you do try and pull these kind of magnitude of plots off is that you impact literally anyone who has their characters based in and around Ul'dah, regardless of if they read stuff on the RPC or not (I personally haven't kept an eye on that thread at all because my interest was never caught) and so when you meet someone who brings this up in IC conversation, you force them to take a stance on where they were when the attack happened, how they dealt with their own water sources, etc etc - all stuff that they never RP'ed on before because they were not a part of that plot, and they didn't know it existed. Heck, to a character deeply rooted in Ul'dah, poisoning of the water supplies could have devastating consequences, such as their family and friends dying. When it's something that is actually placed in the game like a bomb crater of something, by the developers, it's something that everyone can see and react to - with player plots, they don't stand a chance. And I honestly don't think it's fair to impose that on other players, I doubt anyone would react kindly to a random player just saying they saw your house blow up because they wanted a plot out of it. The only way you can truly pull off these plots is either by embracing that it'll become sort of a bubble-rp, where you only mention it to those inside the bubble and leave everyone else alone, or to get creative and make up your own little town somewhere in an unmapped part of Thanalan, drawing on people's abilities to imagine that there are things there which don't show on screen. *puts her two gil in a box and rolls onwards* -
We have done a summer clean-up in the only feasible way we saw possible - by moving from one LS to another. We have moved all of the active members (Right now in the range of 70 people) to a new linkshell which is still named Europa. The old linkshell is now called Old Europa and will be closed in 5-7 days time, or whenever we are convinced we have everyone moved over. This means we have PLENTY of space for new members, so if you ever wanted to join our merry bunch of people, now is the time
