"Witty" characters, can they be roleplayed by the dumb?
Berrod Armstrong replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
As I mentioned in my post, it was a phrasing problem. I do not speak of intellect or knowledge, I speak of raw sharp-mindedness and wit. I don't mean to offend anyone, and if someone takes this personally, I apologize. This isn't a personal attack against those who play witty characters. However, I part from the belief that unless you're given a script, you cannot fake possessing mental faculties you truly lack. If you claim your character is intelligent enough to come back with quick-witted responses, then you, as a roleplayer, have to come up with those witty responses as quickly as your character would. For someone who isn't sharp-minded, this is nearly impossible. This usually leads to the character falling flat, because you as a roleplayer cannot keep up with the character you want to portray. My father is an actor. He has done all kinds of acting, including Improv. Role-play is a lot like imrpov, because you don't follow a script, it's fully reactionary. He has told me that in order to portray a quick-witted person, one must be sharp minded, otherwise you won't be able to play the part. Perhaps a change of the thread's subject might help, if a sharp mind and quick wit is what you're talking about. Addressing the word 'dumb' may assist as well, regardless of if the intent is not to offend. Not to mention, if someone not of a sharp mind cannot respond as fast as their character can, it has nothing to do with the roleplay at all. If they take five minutes to respond and simply put in their emote "Berrod Armstrong's response was almost immediate, blah blah," Then the scene has been narrated in a way that paints the character as quick witted -- even if the player took five minutes to come up with the response. It's all about the writing. -

-How do Elementals gift succor if it is man-made? And the phrase "light of succor" sounds holy, reverent, pure. Based on everything that the Elementals consider mankind to be... a man-made white magic would be none of those things. -Additionally, the magic of the Fae is also called Succor, but the Fae were man-made, so then is Succor man-made as well? But then why would the Scholars need to create the Fae to gain access to Succor if it was man-made? Why create an Elemental? If the power was already in your hands? Which leads me to believe it wasn't. I think the Scholars of Nym saw the Succor of the White Mages and they sought to create their own, but only Elementals have that magic, so they needed to create a lesser Elemental. Thus were born the Fae. Perhaps this was the perversion of Succor that the Elementals spoke of? We don't know. Probably never will. Another possible theory on what this perversion was: I'll start off by saying that I myself am not sure if Succor is man made or not based on the implications of what has been discussed above. From what I read, however...these things keep floating in my mind. Bear with me, I'll tout none of it as fact, just simply as my own musings. ...most of the points countering the possible man-made origin of white magic seem to come from the Padjal, who may or may not have been fed this by the elementals. It explains the sanctity of it, why they regard it as holy. It sounds like it's fact but it's very possible that it could be subjective. Elementals controlling the information their creations receive, etc. As for the scholars creating Fae to gain access to succor; I'm thinking that they perceived the elemental power/aether within the twelveswood was the source from which the white mages drew. Not that the elementals themselves GIFTED the Amdapori, but rather the aether the Amdapori used was perhaps SIPHONED from them and their lands. Without a source like that in Nym, they may have perhaps created the Fae to compensate. To me it seems rather up in the air, with all the answers based on subjective views on the events -- we don't have that definite word of yea or nay. Is it too late for the submission of questions to the lore panel? This seems like a good one!

They can do so, they may do so, they should do so and they would do so if so inclined. -

Do people emoting getting a drink from Momodi count? Or people who post stuff like, 'Momodi handed over the key to the inn room with an exasperated look'. I'm very curious! Nah. I do not mind that! Makes the world feel more alive. It is not "I name my char Momodi, I copy her looks, and claim to be the one and only, and fuck you if you don't want me to roleplay a canon character." Write your own story with what you are given, but do not go copy pasta someone's else's character. It is considered the numbero uno sin when people do it with player created characters, and I feel like the characters created by the dev team should get that same respect you know? It is not up to you to write the story of those characters. What people do behind closed doors, or just make these characters for teh lulz to run around with it OOC, I don't mind. I get a good laugh about people recreating those character's looks ect, but as soon they treat it as their own character? Hell no girl, I'm outa here. Ohhh! I see! Thanks for the clarification! I see people with OOC characters like that but I don't really pay them mind. OOC toons can be whatever. I've never actually run into one IC before -- though I do see IC blogs and the like (usually made for shipping...eugh).

I guess my main issue is that so much of the world doesn't make sense if teleportation happens and is simply twice the cost of an airship ticket. Why would passenger travel by airship even exist and not be completely obsolete? Why would chocobos exist for individual use outside of transporting goods? How would prisons work? Would it even be possible to detain people at all? When I think of hypothetical RP situations relevant to my character or even her backstory, the reality of teleportation would make it much different. For instance, part of her backstory involves being stranded somewhere, and being stranded is theoretically impossible in a world where teleportation exists. To me it seems like one of those game mechanics that's not meant to actually have a real effect on the world. A world where people can instantaneously teleport across the globe would be very different from the world we know, and from the Eorzea we see. It's almost like saying that I can carry 25 suits of armour around with me at all times IC. Yes it's a game mechanic but, story thing? Really? And while I realize it's specifically acknowledged in the MSQ, it also seems kind of like the world mostly carries on as though teleportation either doesn't exist or is somehow inconvenient or difficult. Also, even though it's commonplace in gameplay, I actually rarely see people actually using it in the course of their RP, so I should be able to safely disregard it as an option in situations where I'd like for travel to actually be difficult. And no, "I better put on a sweater b/c it's cold in Dragonhead" is not what I mean. Sin covered it in his post.

Have most people been swept up into their FC RP?
Berrod Armstrong replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
It's been the opposite on my end; my members go out and RP with others -- and with each other in public places. We usually get together as a group to RP for the scheduled events. BUT, I'll keep an eye out for you, Kale! Random approachery is good stuff. Also Graeham I'll find you this weekend if it's the last thing I do lmao. Berrod's got a crate of ore for him! -
I'll have Berrod probably recite some prayers and mantras and -- harmlessly -- demonstrate punishment and self-flagellation rituals before the stone (as well of rites of intercession) -- AS WELL AS SHOW PEOPLE HOW TO MAKE THEIR OWN LITTLE SHRINE TO HIM (fun fact: it involves destruction!). He'll also preach a little about destruction if he gets the opportunity. Maybe he'll get little prayer scrolls printed for those who can read. YES GOOD EXCITEMENT.

I'm aware and appreciate the efforts behind these, knowing events are a big way to get out. The only event I've attended myself is the Costa event Kilid mentioned and it was very nice. What I'm encouraging id some kind of event that moves about every week as opposed to being in one spot to encourage exploration of the huge map that is Eorzea. that children aged event that you just mentioned it sounds exactly what I mean, I just wasn't aware. I would have cited it if I did. Thank you for pointing it out. As you said, though, not every event is everyone's cup of tea; as cool of an idea it may be, Eddard would never go to that event. It's one of the reasons why I think a cyclic sort of thing could be useful. If one week's thing isn't enough motive to leave, maybe the next one will be. It's good that you're encouraging it. But nothing's going to happen until you do it! Go do it! Plan it, start it, run it. You have the idea, you know exactly what you want, you're in a position to craft it just the way you like it. So do it! Otherwise, people will continue to stir their own cup of tea, and you can't really fault them for that.

Berrod Armstrong replied to GloryRhodes's topic in Tonberry's Lantern (IC)
Berrod Armstrong sipped from his mug of juice as he exited the Astral Agency headquarters. The morning air was crisp, and the rising sun glittered upon the metal fixings of the Goblet property's fences. For the sake of minimal decency he donned a pair of loose white trousers; he couldn't fetch the morning news in the raw, after all. Casually he picked up the tightly folded periodical to give it a quick flip through. The ad of the scantily clad Highlander brought a slight, typically lecherous smirk to his lips -- then he recognized who it was. Needless to say, his mouthful of juice soaked the page through.
