Disaster! SE just ruined your headcanon!
D'aito Kuji replied to Warren Castille's topic in RP Discussion
I was flippant before but I think I have a real answer. If SE added to the Southern Sagolii so that one could completely cross the desert and find a new zone, that could be problematic as D'aito is from that area. As the location of her tribe is outside the map, no one else can confirm that it does or doesn't exist. A new zone south of the Sagolii could possibly make D'aito's background unworkable. I don't have a very complicated concept so the Lore changes a lot of you mentioned wouldn't change much about D'aito. Then again, if the mating habits of traditional Seekers were changed in some way to make it more conventional - that would change her origin completely. -
We've discussed WHAT powers, let's discuss WHY powers!
D'aito Kuji replied to Warren Castille's topic in RP Discussion
I think D'aito Kuji has to have a certain amount of excessive strength, resistance, and stamina to do the things she does. I don't have her IC as strong as her in-game self, but taking down large game, going up against a mob of pirates or poachers, requires her to be somewhat above the average denizen of Eorzea. I limit her Mary Sue by playing her to be naive and somewhat incompetent. But with experience, she'll get better at what she does. I'll have to think of something else that limits the character and provides drama - probably more tribal traditions versus the modern world angst. Since I have a tendency to RP in real time, she's only left her tribe a little over a year ago. That's not enough time to get used to all the diversity in culture she's experienced. -
Disaster! SE just ruined your headcanon!
D'aito Kuji replied to Warren Castille's topic in RP Discussion
I think the only way my headcanon could be derailed was if SE said that Miqo'te were just Hyur in costume. -
D'aito Kuji has to have some kind of unusual strength and resistance to damage but she doesn't know how or why. Neither her sire nor her mother displayed any unusual strength beyond what Miqo'te are generally known for. I've left that a mystery for the character. It's probably just a fluke genetic mutation that gave her double muscles (muscular hypertrophy) although that's difficult to see under her armor. She was the runt of her line, the smallest Miqo'te in the tribe and typically smaller than most in general. While initially leading to bullying, once she took control of her strength she was quickly left at peace. She was trained in hunting and melee fighting by several of her aunts and sisters. She simply has to have something going on to be able to do some of the thing she does. She's no where near as strong as she's represented in the game mechanics but I prefer her to have twice to three times the strength of a typical female Miqo'te. This allows her to carry her pack and her ax, slay all kinds of beasts, and deal with poachers and pirates. She can also jump down from heights that would kill others (a game mechanic that I do keep IC) Her resistance to injury might be innate or an artifact of her armor. But she's not invulnerable. She's still dealing with the recovery of her nearly fatal beatdown a few moons ago. I pretty much ignore most of the magical game mechanic stuff for D'aito Kuji. But she will use potions and whatnot to assist her when needed. I'm just so unfamiliar with fantasy stuff that it's prolly best to keep D'aito grounded more in reality.

http://40.media.tumblr.com/b43e81aa152b39e4fb742ea6b5acc7ef/tumblr_nhqoyqKNXE1tmmfrio1_540.png[/img] D'aito Kuji is a tribal Miqo'te from a branch of the Dodo in the Southern Sagolii. She is arguably employed by the Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa but mostly works as an adventurer for hire, pricipally for bounty. Her being so small works to her advantage as the bounty would hardly expect someone of her stature to be looking for them. While confident, D'aito Kuji is not particularly competent which has led to a number of mistakes and embarrassment for herself and others. However, once she takes a job, she will do everything she can to see it done. This determination has to be balanced with her competency by anyone who would hire her. She would have even more sucess were she more understanding of the cultural differences and traditions of some of the people she meets, especially when it comes to love and sex. Her highly-traditional background on such matters clashes with many of the accepted notions like commitment and fideity. When arriving at a town she has been to before, she finds herself having to be alert for former lovers who might feel no small amount of scorn for her hasty departure. But on the whole, D'aito is a capable adventurer-for-hire and is always keen to strike up new buisiness relationships where possible.

I've always been a bit confused that people have this expectation that RP is just gonna happen, that it's a feature of the game that's not working right. MMORPGs are a lot like life. Think about how many people you talk to on a given day. Likely you know them already. How many times are you walking in a park or down a street and just start talking to them and sharing your backstory. I'd wager that it's kinda rare. A lot of people, like me, are very not into being spoken to if they do not know them. A catch 22? Obviously. Roleplay isn't that much different. I'm not gonna RP just because someone else wants to. It has to make sense in the time and space of my character, just like it does in real life. There are places where people go to comiserate with others, bars, churches, cons, standing in line. All those things exist in FFXIV. I am not super great at RP but it's not because of my social phobia (well, it is a bit) but it's because I'm not super familiar with all the Lore. I don't want to jump into some complex discussion of dragoons or Elzen history or whatever because I don't know enough about it. I don't do this kind of thing in real life either. FFXIV isn't as easy for me as TSW or CoH was, but it's not so difficult either.

Does your character have a trinket of some sort?
D'aito Kuji replied to Kage's topic in Character Workshop
D'aito Kuji has a ring that belonged to her sire, Kuji Nuhn. While D'aito was not especially close to her sire, she keeps the ring to remind her of what she lost when he was illegitimately overthrown by Kujo Tia. D'aito was close to Kujo Tia who had taken a special interest her. Kujo helped educate D'aito and encouraged her adventurous ways, teaching her many useful skills. It became increasingly clear that his interest in D'aito was romantic. After she rejected him multiple times, he swore revenge and poisoned the Nuhn before challenging him for the right to become Nuhn. D'aito was not impressed to say the least. After discovering that D'aito knew about the illegitimacy of his position, Kujo suspected that she would reveal the secret to the tribe. But D'aito understood that without a Nuhn, the tribe would become unstable and more damage could be done by that than by keeping the secret. D'aito would keep Kujo's secret as long as she was allowed to leave. But Kujo was not satisfied and tried to have her killed, fearing that he could not best her in combat. After threatening her sisters, D'aito Kuji ran away and sneaked onto a merchant's caravan and made her way to the coast. She stowed away on a ship bound for parts unknown. She swore revenge on Kujo Nuhn and she keeps her sire's ring to remind her. -
RE: Describe your character without referring to appearance, profession(s), or origin D'aito Kuji has long harbored a thirst for adventure, a desire to see what lies beyond the horizon. With a quick wit, a sharp tongue, and a cantankerous spirit, she is more than capable of living in a land where the rule of law could be several days travel away. A mildly sardonic sense of humor can help put others at ease and boost her own spirits. While quick to anger at times, D'aito can also be patient and kind. Her usual manner would seem to most to be relatively laid back but with an air of competency. Her confidence in herself is rarely shaken, even when she makes mistakes. Some might say that D'aito isn't especially intelligent, and there may be some truth to that. She has a tendency to bore easily, especially when confronted with complex ideas or situations. However, thinking her to be a simpleton might be a mistake for she is clever and her instincts often reward her. D'aito is amenable to training and is quick to learn new things. She also possesses a strong sense of duty and will do what it takes to fulfill that duty or appease her sense of honor. Unlike many, D'aito strives to live a moral life, keeping to the scripture and traditions of her people and culture. This can be a challenge in her adopted home as the diversity of it's people mean a mixing and blending of ideas and traditions, sometimes resulting in the watering down of ideals that D'aito feels strongly about. She maintains ideas about marriage and family that some might find to be too out of date or close-minded. D'aito reacts to this by keeping a lot of her ideas to herself and consulting other followers of Azeyma when necessary. --- I think I might be able to go on forever so I'll stop now.

Character Creation: Assessment and Critique
D'aito Kuji replied to Warren Castille's topic in FFXIV Discussion
This is mostly how I feel. I was slightly disappointed with the facial features as it doesn't seem possible for a Miqo'te not to be cute. But I look at my cats faces at home, and cats on the internet, and cats all around, they are almost always cute. So I just accepted that all Miqo'te tend to be cute with only minor differences between their structure. But I am always, always, always, gonna cheerlead for more options, customizations, and alternative armor and gear. -
A Heavensward Race Survey (From Reddit)
D'aito Kuji replied to Zyrusticae's topic in FFXIV Discussion
It's the only reason I play really. I'm an unapologetic neko fan and have been since I was little. After years of trying to shoehorn my fandom into games decidedly unfriendly to such things (City of Heroes), I jumped at the chance to play one that's an official part of the world. I will never give that up. -
I can almost certainly conspire to send D'aito on an adventure in that direction. I'm sure someone there owes her money or has a lost pet.

All great suggestions! I generally riff off the game's story but try to keep it vague and never as adventerous. My character is after a murderous man-in-black, to collect a bounty and get revenge for all the embarrassing defeats she's had at his hand. But that man isn't the one featured in the game. She complains about having to train her Chocobo, complains about having to walk and run so much, and complains about the stranger or more boring jobs she's sent on. I try to think about what if FFXIV was really real. How would a character react? What would their lives be like outside the main story line. I've always been fascinated with what say, superheroes do in their spare time. What shows does Batman enjoy? Is Wonder Woman secretly addicted to Lifetime movies? Is Superman into alien abduction stories? How do these extraordinary people face the mundane things in life? D'aito isn't so extraordinary in one way, but she is in another. She can't be just a regular person, no one tells the story of our daily routine like laundry day, the commute to work, sitting in school or work all day. I mean, stories might reference it, detail it a little, but stories are almost never wholly about those things. And yet...that's exactly the kind of thing I'm fascinated by and love to write about and it's the kind of thing I tend to RP. Telling tales of being ripped off by a Lalafell, her money bag stolen by a sweet looking old Hyur, or commenting about the weather, comparing weapons, armor, and where the best fish can be found, are all things that have been at the center of my RP. I mean, most people might find that boring and I do have more classic RP adventures, but I do prefer to examine the mundane lives of my characters while minimizing the adventure.

While I have collected quite a few outfits for D'aito Kuji, she only wears three of them. She is an adventurer and must spend many days, if not weeks out and about. She may sleep under the stars, or at an Inn, or in someone's spare room but whatever the case, she cannot carry with her too many clothes. Generally speaking, she has her Marauder armor and her Gladiator armor and a "nice" dress for more formal occasions. Outside of that setting she is almost always in her armor, something which does bother her after a few days or weeks without a bath. She is quick to have herself and her armor cleaned up whenever she makes it to a town. She used to carry the first outfit she bought upon arriving in Limsa Lominsa (the starting outfit) mostly for sentimental value. But she gave it to her retainer, C'xiko Koto. (I'm not sure how many outfits I actually have. I almost always select the clothing option when leveling. And I've bought a few things and participated in the events. I know I have way too many hats.)

I'm looking forward to what might be a dramatic reduction in Miqo'te. Not that I mind so many people liking Miqo'te, I probably wouldn't play FFXIV at all without them, but it would help my immersion to see fewer of them. We are supposed to be slightly uncommon. I did the benchmark and messed around with the character gen and I was a little tempted but I really only have time for one character. There were some nice options for the Au Ra and I'll be looking forward to seeing how everyone kits theirs out. In the meantime, I'll keep on playing my tribal adventurer.

My aging Asus RoG laptop is still making things work with it's NVIDIA 560m. That was good cheer like three years ago but it's showing it's age. I got a "High" score after I switched to DirectX9 and changed one of the graphics settings (can't remember which). I would really like to see what the game looks like with a more powerful system. But I don't have the money. Still very glad to see that I can play Heavensward, if I ever manage to level up.

I wonder how many Miqo'te know about Meracydia. If they've been in Eorzea for generations, some if not most may have forgotten? Eh, probably not. I'm still going to RP as if D'aito only knew the legend of her ancestors coming over the ice bridge from a "forgotten" land. Forgotten to her tribe maybe, but apparently not completely forgotten.

D'aito Kuji is nothing if not intensely curious and adventurous. I'm certain that she would be very interested in meeting them and learning about them, hear their stories, and take in their cultural differences. She is very much an ask questions first and shoot later, only if necessary kind of personality. She might find the male Au Ra somewhat intimidating depending on the circumstances but would be as accommodating as she could possibly be. The people of Limsa Lominsa, her adopted home, were similarly accommodating when the Miqo'te arrived in numbers (or so she heard). Her personal experience would bear this out. She would jump at the chance to be a good host for them. But as with any marauder/warrior, there's little doubt that she'd also use whatever she learned about them to effectively combat them, if necessary. But she would very much prefer nothing like that happened.

Your skin colour versus your character's skin colour
D'aito Kuji replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
I'm east asian (Japanese) and on the darker side, even more so when I tan. I've always tried to make my characters represent my own ethnicity (with varying degrees of success). I do this mainly because I prefer to represent and I think representation is important. My characters often have Japanese names for this reason. But I don't think it's all that obvious in-game (in FFXIV anyway). None of the stories I've encountered make much of skin tone. I think in Eorzea the differences between the lalafell, miqo'te, hyur, elezen, and roegadyn, are plentiful enough to cause all manner of discord in the realm. As D'aito is from the deserts of the Sagolii, it makes some sense that her skin would be darker. But the U tribe is not noticeably darker. But D'aito loves to sun bathe. I've played lighter skinned characters too. My City of Heroes character was very pale because the sun's light could not penetrate her nigh-invulnerable skin. -
Echoing everyone else, there's not very much set lore as to the location of any of the tribes except for the U Tribe and that might only be a sub-set. I place D'aito Kuji's D (dodo or deh) Tribe in the Far side of the Sagolii Desert but I'm always quick to emphasize that this is not "the" D Tribe, just a branch or off-shoot. I'm fond of the idea that there used to be Dodos around but that her tribe killed them all several generations ago but kept the name as tradition. I'm pretty sure that there aren't actually dodos in that part of the game map. But there could have been some desert variety at some point. Of course, I don't even know if any D tribes are actually reverential of the dodo or it's just a name. But I go with the reverential part - not a religion because that's probably limited to Azeyma, but just a reverence. Unless it's specifically countered by lore, I figure I'm free to add as many details as I want so long as they conform to the general feel and history of the world.

All the stuff above & RP'ers that don't get mad because I haven't memorized every bit of the Lore. I do try to learn about the location my character happens to be in but they won't necessarily know about places they haven't been to yet (in-character). And they left the Southern Sagolii Desert just last year after growing up secluded and isolated from all but a few merchants. So if I don't immediately know what a Duskwight is, try to be patient. It may also be the case that my character simply hasn't met one yet. (I am trying to learn everything but this is my first fantasy style game and the Lore is gargantuan compared to MMOs I've played before)

I think D'aito is a solid 5. She's not especially skilled but can carry out most of the things she's tasked to do. She's more or less an adventurer-for-hire "no job is too big, no fee is too big." She carries a battle ax and isn't shy to use it if need be, but she prefers to talk things out. Faced with incredible odds, she will throw herself into the middle of a mob, praying that Azeyma the Warden will guide and protect her. This doesn't always work out. I went back to playing TSW (The Secret World) for a while and left D'aito in a coma, recovering from grave injuries due to an ambush. Now that I'm back in FFXIV, I plan to have her dealing with her scars (mental and physical) while still trying to achieve fame and fortune as an adventurer.

Reasoning for irregular race/nationality combinations
D'aito Kuji replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
Reading all of this, I feel like I'm the odd person out. I play a Miqo'te from the Southern Sagolii who longed for wealth and adventure. They stowed away in a merchants wagon, made it to the coast and got aboard a ship bound for parts unknown. They arrived in Limsa Lominsa and that became their adopted home. My Miqo'te is just an ordinary Miqo'te, not biracial, not especially magical, not especially smart, not especially attractive, and not particularly skilled at anything other than melee fighting. I did send them down the Marauder path and justified it, in my mind, by deciding that the only thing unusual about them was above average strength (that strength being physical or magical - doesn't matter to them or me). They are basically just a good, earnest, friendly character who likes to meet people, make deals, and fight whenever they are given a chance. In the past, I have made characters that stretched the lore (not so much in this game as Miqo'te lore is honestly all I can handle) but I deliberately wanted to make my character plain but honest, average but affable, common but reliable. But I can see things from everyone's point of view in this thread. But I do sometimes feel like I'm the only one playing straight (so to speak), but I really don't mind. It's probably good that my character is weirded out by all the diversity in people, culture, and behavior.
