Not sure that that can currently be done without removing the alerts and manually subscribing to your own threads that you're interested in. Might be worth looking into as a feature, FW would know better than I.

Video Games, Quality thereof and You
Melkire replied to Warren Castille's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I don't think any type of rating system will be truly be able to quantify the quality of a game. It's a really personal experience in many cases. I don't see the appeal of games like Gone Home or Dear Ester, but I know people like them, and they're not blatantly bad like Ride to Hell. Word of mouth helps yeah, but only if you do share a common liking of the genre. Well, when I say word of mouth, I mean identifying individuals, whether they be friends or online reviewers, that share your tastes and/or have a common liking for games you find entertaining and enjoyable, and then keeping an ear turned to those sources. "I give Game Y an 8.8" doesn't tell me as much as "I like Game Y because I'm a fan of Mario Kart and Game Y is a kart racer in a similar vein except with hoverboats and planes and cute animal characters." I love you, Wacky Wheels and Diddy Kong Racing. ; ; -
Video Games, Quality thereof and You
Melkire replied to Warren Castille's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I saw mentions of Metacritic and such earlier in the thread. One very important thing to note is that word-of-mouth is still the best review format for any given video game. Attempts to quantify quality are always prone to error, given how enterprising hatred can result in folks bombing Metacritic's User Scores (4chan's /v/ used to do this quite often back before that board went downhill) and so on. There's also the inherent bias in a 10-point scale: rarely does anyone give an honest score of anything between a 2 and a 6. 7s, 8s, 9s, and 10s are common scores, as are 0s and 1s. This naturally skews matters, especially when many user reviews are coming from young adolescents. Don't get me started on aggregate reviews, either: video game reviewers, as extensions of video game journalism which was more or less morally bankrupt and lacking integrity from the word "go", are prone to the usual politicking from marketing and Big Business, and those practices are allowed to continue due to ignorance on the part of a large portion of the consumer base (video gaming as a hobby blew up in the mid 00's, population wise, and many casual "gamers" as we now refer to them are still playing catch-up; just ask around and find out how many of them still think IGN is a good video games news site). Nothing will ever be as useful as turning to a friend and asking, "hey, did you play Game X? Did you like it? Why or why not? What sort of games do you usually like that your tastes and preferences might have affected your opinion on Game X?" tl;dr: quit being sheeple, video games have yet to mature enough as an industry for reliable ratings systems to have emerged. -
What Tv show/movie are you ashamed to say you DIDNT WATCH?
Melkire replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I've only seen two or three episodes of The Wire. I would fix this, but my computer is broken, Netflix doesn't have it, I'm not paying Amazon on top of Netflix just for one show, and I've neither the time nor the transportation nor the energy to go looking for a complete boxed set. ...I should just buy the boxed set off the net. Amazon or B&N. Yes. That sounds good. -
Osric's reaction to a sudden influx of demonic peoples? Probably the following.

It's Riot Blade, which is a straightforward stab. Spirits Within has a roundhouse spin and a twist of the wrist.

The letters were everywhere. They seemingly went out to every residence, every box, every drop point to have ever been known as associated in some way with one Sebastian Redgrave. Each letter was accompanied by a small, blue marble of a linkpearl, and each letter was written by the same hand, in the same script, with the same ink, on the same vellum. Each letter read as followed. You asked for an audition. I delivered the requested performance. The man has been swept off the board. Whether you are still invested in the end-game or not, you owe me the chance to give the little ones, those who are now as you once were, a moment's shelter from the coming storm. How often did you pray in those suns, only to be disappointed? How often did you curse the gods, if there were, in fact, any to be cursed? Do not lie to yourself, Nero. Had there been a helping hand, would you have taken it? Let me be that helping hand now, for them.

YDA USED ONE-ILM PUNCH. It's almost entirely worthless in-game at the moment, but man oh man do I ever love the animation for it. So graceful.

@Merri: You'd best moonwalk down Hawker's Alley in that.

Post a gif Representing Your Character Preparing Eggs!

[Moderator Hardhat] Punting this to the Off-Topic board. Not really sure what this has to do with RP discussion, and it's more forum game in nature than character development related. [/Moderator Hardhat] -
What games would you like to get a remaster?
Melkire replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Descent, Magic Carpet, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Nanosaur, and a really obscure Asteroids variant for Mac OS known as "The Zone" could all use a remaster (in the sense of "new graphics, new assets, new engine, but everything else including gameplay remains the same"). -
Let's talk about Valve new addiction to the Workshop
Melkire replied to Desu Nee's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I don't really buy that argument when: A. So many great artists are floundering for work & pay. B. So many great modders (read: programmers) work for fun rather than profit. C. So many artists and modders go into the video game industry professionally off the backs of free modding projects such as those that I've mentioned. D. What constitutes and qualifies as "better" is purely subjective. Think I'll bow out of this thread at this point. -

I invite you to take a look at Zandronum (and other, older source ports for Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen, etc.) and FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project for wonderful examples and demos of what can be done and developed for a community by the community when both the tools and the end product are freely available to anyone and everyone. There's no "entitlement" here, just sad resignation that large companies seek bigger profit margins. -

If they can find a way to charge you for it, they will do so. Water, for instance, is not free. The only reason air-to-breathe is free is because no one can keep you from doing so. No one has figured out how to restrict and limit access. People have been decrying digital media as a method for distribution for a long, long time now when it comes to video games. Steam was an early point of contention. DRM ring a bell? I'm sure plenty of us remember the days of CD Keys. Hell, I remember folks pirating Doom (1993) left, right, and center. So many illegal copies on floppies, you have no idea. tl;dr: Speak with your wallet. Don't support what you feel shouldn't be supported. -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Melkire replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I'd argue that DRG and NIN are the more acceptable melee DPS choices for big pulls. MNK can AoE DPS reliably for as long as Perfect Balance lasts and that's it, then they're back to spreading DoTs and hammering away at single targets as quickly as they can while maybe, MAYBE throwing out a Rockbreaker every third weaponskill GCD. Ultimately, how far I pull and how many trash mobs I pull will depend on the group composition. MNK and SMN? Nope. BRD and BLM? Yes please. -
Updated! THIS IS YOUR ONE-WEEK WARNING. I will be culling folks from this directory at the end of the month. Simply post here in this thread within the next week if you wish to remain on the list, or post an update if you have one. If you do not wish to remain on the list, there's no need to post. Be advised that I have given up on editing entries to keep them brief and concise. Please also be advised that entries with one character are infinitely more easy to read than entries with multiple, even if the latter makes you easier to reach in-game.

Your skin colour versus your character's skin colour
Melkire replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
My heart is darker than my skin, which ought to be darker than my heart. I'm too white to pass for brown, and yet I'm too brown to pass for white. Filling out forms is awful. All the disadvantages and none of the advantages. -
It crosses a line when the folks responsible for such works start getting undue heat for them, which is what happened and is still happening. That event was so much more than "poisoning Ul'dah" and yet that's all that folks choose to remember it for. I could name so many more plotlines - public, private, or otherwise - that folks have run that are just as if not more objectionable... but you don't see me constantly harping back to those and fixating on their negative points. That would be hurtful and disrespectful, IMO. To unironically quote Chris Crocker, "leave Britney alone." EDIT: I chose to constructively critique the presentation of an otherwise sound and great concept for community-building. I haven't brought it up since because I'm aware that folks were hurt by its reception and it would be disrespectful of me to bring it up again.

Trust me, the tank feels it just as badly if not more so. Except in the tank's case, it's "...I've cycled through all my mitigation cooldowns and the mobs are still up. Probably gonna die soon. Shit shit shit shit shit healer pls ffffffuuuuuuu--" BUT THE TANK KEEPS PULLING THE SAME AMOUNT T_T I can only speak for myself. 1. I check which DPS classes/jobs are in party with me. 2. If I have at least one THM/BLM, or some combination of class/job that lends itself well to AoE DPS (DRG/BRD), then I pull big. 3. If big pull doesn't go over well, I reassess and account for low DPS or strained healing. 4. I adjust the following pulls accordingly. -

I'm just going to step in to note that, in the case that ArmachiA is referring to, many of the complaints and much of the debate over one particular aspect of Blood on the Sands (the event had a name, and I'll kindly thank you to use it) came from detractors who were not participating in said event and could have easily ignored and/or disregarded it IC and/or OoC and gone happily on their way. A public event does not mean that it has to be a canon event for everyone, everywhere. A public event simply means that it is open for everyone to sign up for and participate in should they so choose.

Had a dragoon ez-mode their way through WP HM (Exp Rou) with me tanking last night. Heavy Thrust and Full Thrust combo only. No Phleb and no Chaos Thrust combo until we wiped on the last boss because DPS didnt down adds in time to save the healer. Let me repeat that. Lv 50 DRG in i100+ didnt DoT or Disembowel a thing throughout a whole dungeon until I called for more DPS. No jumps either. Lazy time-wasting shit. -

Ah, alright. I'm of the personal opinion that atmospheres and environments that are too shielded by policies that promote politically correct niceties and seek to impose "we're all friends and we all have to get along!" utopias generally can't support large communities after a certain amount of population growth because when you stuff too many people into the same room, those policies start to fail. Why? Because you can't force everyone to get along without going totalitarian and transparent. But that's just one man's opinion and I'll be standing by the updated rule sets and policies once we release them.
