  1. and to that guy since he was there fishing he was ic and just assumed that your characters were ignoring him. You just never know. Thank the numerous rp communities on the internet for having different interpretations of what makes good rp, and people bringing those interpretations with them a full decade later. then we all argue.
  2. RP is an imperfect representation of interactions happening in a virtual world, being created by imperfect writers. MMO rp is happening in a restricted visual representation of a fully imagined virtual world. People who write have different ideas about how character actions should be written (ie, if you're whispering, you might write it once and then assume people know). Those three things make walking into public rp something that, in my opinion, should always be done with a respect to the idea that someone's idea of things may not be your own. MMO rp is not regulated by any central governing body. That means that the most any of us can do is try to be as polite to each other as we can, and try to be understanding that sometimes different views are just gonna clash so badly that y'all might not be able to intersect. Let's take that example you gave of the conversation about illegal deeds. I'll use my character Zhavi for a few examples. Example One Now, let's say I'm in character, RP tag on, but I don't actually emote her listening in on the conversation. I stand her nearby, and read all of the details of what these people are talking about. Later, because Zhi is this type of person, she approaches them for keeping quiet money, and they oocly object. To them, unless you emote your character listening in, your character is not icly present no matter what other indications said otherwise. Because you came in on their rp, in the end you can't force them to change what they believe to be rp etiquette. Example Two Zhi's listening in on this conversation, and I do some emotes along the lines of Zhavi Streetrunner is hanging out all skulky-like with booze in hand.. I've emoted that she's there, so to me it's a given she's aware of everything happening in the area. Later, she goes to get that sweet, sweet hush money. But to them, unless I specifically emote at them, my character is not interacting with their characters and thus isn't necessarily close enough or aware enough to listen in. They object because they would have changed their character's behavior if I had emoted at them, but since I didn't they took it as an ooc sign that there was no ic interaction between. Example Three This time, I rp that Zhavi keeps glancing at their table, and giving body language signals that she's aware of them and paying attention. But when Zhi goes to extort the shit out of them, they claim to have no notion oocly of my posts! Turns out they were so focused on their own posts that they flat out didn't see mine. They then tell me that they wished I'd sent them a pm, since they would have changed their rp if they'd oocly been aware of my ic posts. It's their rp, so I can't force them to change what happened. Example Four I see people rping, and I emote Zhi showing up and listening, and the whole shebang goes down. Zhi approaches them later to shake them down, but they tell me it ain't gonna happen. Turns out that prior to my arrival they had described a whole scene that was different to what was physically represented in game. For one, it was in the dead of night, in an abandoned alley they had thoroughly checked out and posted lookouts for, including a bunch of npcs they didn't have characters to physically represent. For two, they were chattering nonstop oocly about what was happening, and were so limited on time that they just couldn't immediately clue me in on what was happening. Meanwhile, my posts were so glaringly contradictory to what was happening (since I'd rped Zhi strolling up sweating in the blinding sun, in an otherwise empty alley), that they decided to just be a little rude and ignore me. Since I never sent them an ooc message, they didn't think it necessary to send me one. Rude? Maybe, but it's their rp and I was unaware. In any case, I can't force them to change. What's my point? Everyone is different. What is blindingly obvious to you is not blindingly obvious to someone else. Your definition of something non concrete like 'public rp' is based on your perceptions and beliefs -- and other people are likely to have other perceptions and beliefs. People who RP often have histories where they started out in specific rp communities off in their own bubble, and that's where they learned social rp etiquette. John's experience learning how to rp in some Naruto Yahoo group way back when might have shaped him to believe that you need to post when your character is present, while Mary's experience learning how to rp in WoW might have shaped her to believe that if your character is standing somewhere, that means they are present. You won't automatically know. And because there is no centralized governing body dictating rules and regulations of FFXIV rp, one way is not necessarily more correct than another -- even if it seems to you that one is better. We all have opinions. Figuring out why one opinion should be followed over another has lead to conflict throughout human history. You aren't going to get everyone to agree in this corner of the internet. The best you can do is try to compromise, or just live and let live -- even if you think someone else is silly or being stupid. edit because I forgot to finish a sentence. Further edit, another thing - even if their rp in say might not be something they want you to join in on right then, maybe they want you to read it. Maybe it's their hope that you'll be interested, and ask what's happening. Maybe they want to advertise that they exist, but want to rp people in rather than have blind walkups. You really gonna tell them they shouldn't do that? You really gonna discourage them for trying?
  3. Here's hoping Mateus stays stable and Siren gets some love! Sorry to everyone who lost those buffs, though.
  4. Lewis Del Mar in general but holy shit.
  5. I used to! There are people open to it, but I found that approaching folks via pm was my most successful way to acquire forum rp buddies. A making connections thread would likely work, too! The wiki is a good way to find characters that interest you (I sort by recent changes so I know the player/character are still active), then you just send a pm to the account that made/edits the page.
  6. Every time she was in a position to learn something or grow someone else was given the camera instead. She's been a sidekick and comedic relief for so long I think the writers didn't know how to writer her out of that while still keeping her who she is. So instead she got the waffling pedestal not-really-involved treatment.
  7. To me, what Lyse was really missing was more shots of her interacting with other people from Gyr Abania. Leading them, interacting with them, having them have reasons to actually ... want to follow her? There's more of them who seem to look up to the WoL than really show any sort of that for her. It feels like the writing treated her with kid gloves. I mean, Alisae had a stronger learning-to-deal-with-leadership moment when she doesn't know if Alphinaud is alive or dead and gets that 'yeah I know your brother is missing but we need you to step up right now' spiel. Lyse had a couple spots here or there (the one in the Ruby Sea towards the end where she has a monologue about her own naivete and then sorta waves her hands at you saying she doesn't want to wallow in it or whatever could've gone somewhere, but it never did), but overall she's up on a pedestal and not really allowed to learn or interact or really feel anything the mortals are feeling. She was likeable to me, and I enjoyed her, but every time she started to go somewhere it's like she got pulled back so someone else could take the spotlight. So in the end she kinda stayed where she's always been as the lighthearted backup to the srs stuff.
  8. She also mentioned a pleasure district in that long ass monologue. It stuck with me because it was so ... out of place? Like she went from one husband to a second, but uhh...it didn't really make sense, but it kinda added overall. The impression I got from her though wasn't just that it was her family. It was everyone. She was getting abused and everyone knew it and turned a blind eye. The village, anyone she tried to get help from. They all just told her to grin and bear it. And while it does read like cheap characterization, I kinda wonder if maybe this isn't a stock villain character in Japanese literature? You know, where the character isn't really a character so much as a moral representation for something else. Would maybe help explain why she's so flat. BUT I DUNNO MUCH ABOUT JAPANESE LITERATURE, LOL. So like as not I'm way off base. Anyways, I think the things I'm most hyped about are Azim Steppes, and that Gyr Abanian architecture. Ugh, all that Moorish influence (and hints of Ottoman?) makes me drool. Like, man, the MSQ has its flaws and I don't even care. Too busy staring at the pretties. Also Gosetsus death scene was way over contrived. Like this dude is holding up a roof and everyone is taking five minutes to tearfully express how much they love him. It stole the realism and urgency from the scene, and I rolled my eyes so hard because what started out as a gut wrenching scene became 'wow, we're taking turns telling him this while he's struggling to hold up this roof?' like I dunno, I g et he's strong and all but like if he had the strength to hold it up for that long it s eems like they could've figured something out to ... yeah. I get it leads to a SURPRISE HE'S ALIVE thing later, but imo it would have been way more heartwrenching if they all had to leave before finishing up those final last words. BUT OMG THE STEPPES. So many fucking references. I don't like what they did with the Naadam, because imo the real life version with the games is way cooler, but all the food bits, the hospitality, the pastoral nomadism tidbits, the meat dishes!! -- everything! I love it all so much I could do an entire expansion focused around the steppes. Also wtb Ala Mhigo housing pretty please.
  9. The atmosphere is 1000 times better than Heavensward was for me, that's pretty much it. The zones, the people within them, the xaela, the architecture, the sense of purpose. The group dynamic isn't quite as cohesive as Heavensward, but everything else makes up for it. There were one or two places I was rolling my eyes hard (excessive amounts of pathos aren't good for the story weight), but man oh man. I love this expansion. THE ARCHITECTURE! It feels like a love letter. The aesthetics cater almost exactly to the stuff I like -- and I'm not even talking about Kugane. Overall, I'm majorly enthused.
  10. There was a Lodestone post on it, actually. They're delaying it so that they can focus on fixing the instance problems (which I think they hotfixed?). The post had the planned time to turn transfers back on around 8pm PDT. Here ya go! http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/news/detail/46879d81c219d5c4f978a155cbcda0a09acfede4 edit : na - http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/news/detail/9b8959fc115988cff229f92a06512083702895c8
  11. Should there be a big Mod Post about that if that's the case? Make sure everyone knows not to take and post screenies until Tuesday? It was a request, not a desist. The only thing that they directly stated was against the TOS was datamining. They just don't want people casually spoiling the MSQ and such for others -- so spoilers should do the trick, imo. Edit: actual wording: http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/cdd83b2d418a790bc2d1889e939d115318fe52ba
  12. so like, what percentage of your hope dies every time you try again and it gives you that error again?
  13. I am up extra early today to meet a deadline. The wait to get home is gonna be extra long and torturous.
  14. Thanks for always making things so easy to see and get to, man. <3
  15. Need more furnishings! NEED. ALL THE FURNISHINGS.
  16. Man, soon as I see Mateus on that designated list, I hope to add myself and my RP buddy into that hub! <3 (well, whenever is doable -- with SB goin' on I know adding people will get crazy, haha.)
  17. I am kind of low key expecting not to consistently play Stormblood on Balmung til next month, lol. I have plans to work on my Midgardsomr alts and to play another game I've been neglecting if I can't stay connected during active play for more than 5 minutes Backup plans atop backup plans atop backup plans, amirite? A wise thing to have!
  18. Haha, when balmung inevitably goes up in flames I'm planning on going with my friend to walk her dog to help circumvent some of the queue and server down angst.
  19. Before this turns into iterations of the other threads -- I just wanna say that regardless of how much time I spend on Mateus or any other server (waitin' on those sweet, sweet rewards): I hope you continue to see positive growth on Mateus. The more the word gets out, the more people there are spreading it, the better off everyone will be about all the server choices! Good on you for being proactive. My best to Mateus. <3 Here's a bump for new players needing a home! edit - also maybe edit that out in the main post so you stop getting immediate reactions about it, just to help keep things positive.
  20. Imma tell you a story to give you some rl context to tribal names. So, in one of my anthropology classes, awhile ago, we were talking about embarrassing experiences relative to culture. We had a few guys from Athabaskan villages along the river, and they got to joking about how those guys down river were weird (relative to potlatch behavioral expectations and such). Same tribe in the definition sense, but composed of different families and traditions -- just enough to make them seem strange. Point is, despite sharing a tribal name, they had almost nothing to do with each other except occasional and distant interaction. So, if you see a Keeper with the same name, they can be different, and you also have some fun opportunity to collaborate and say 'oh, you're one of those southern Aliapohs,' while giving the side-eye. And then you can do fun cultural rp where they learn to appreciate each other's differences or do a frenemy thing or something and always make fun of each other for the different practices and beliefs they have. It's an opportunity for character interaction and character development! Embrace it. Have fun with it.
  21. You can also request the mods to lock the thread, if you feel the discussion has run its course or otherwise gone off the tracks from what you intended.
  22. Man, I think people forget that Balmung has its share of genuine human garbage, too. It's like families. Every family has one of those people. Same with communities. No matter where you go, you won't be able to escape them. Acting like Mateus is the only place where there's pushback is kinda ignoring the basic tenets of people being people. I mean like, what, a week or two before Balmung shut down wasn't there more tumblr vs RPC drama? (lol who am I kidding, that was every week) It's there, it happens. As other people said, the best way to fight it is just to ignore it and find people to be happy with. Because this is a hobby. It's not worth negative emotions. That only makes it even more like Ul'dah with its established families, individuals, and groups acting in a manner that is toxic to the overall environment. The funny thing about most settings is that they're based off of people. You could rip pretty much any setting and say 'look, this looks like our community in this or that way!' because people are people and ...yeah.
  23. Every week? I think you mean everyday. Man, I always miss the good stuff.
