  1. Understanding it and liking how it was handled are two different things. I understand why they did it, but it does break my heart personally that they don't try. Especially in this case where it wasn't so much a trick of the language than a very Japanese thing that could have been adequately conveyed with only a few minor edits. It's still not that easy. Like I said in my post, I do these sort of adaptations for a living. You have to keep in mind that this game is not meant for solely fans of manga and anime and that if this games wants to be a success, it must appeal to fans who are gamers who may not have anything to do with Japanese media and culture. While what they did was extreme (though I never saw english Haurchefant...I can only tell what the change is from what people are saying), there is definitely a reason for it. The anger is more that something was changed and that people don't really understand what was changed. It's not that he was 'gay.' A lot of people think that Haurchefant was meant to be gay, which would make no sense if your character was a female. But he was very...crazy and said things that could be taken as sexual harassment by an unsuspecting English-only audience. He was supposed to be liked and missed and the Japanese version of that character for an English-only audience who does not understood Japanese media and archetypes would not, under any circumstances, gotten that. They really did run the risk of him being a hated character in english. So while the changes in english were extreme, they were justified. If you really care, go back and change your speaking language to Japanese and listen to it that way. My text and dialogue is in Japanese for this game for a reason. You'd be surprised what else as changed. Scions of the Seventh Dawn are just "Dawn," Alphinaud's group was known as the Grand Company Eorzea. Alphinaud was even more of a douche bag. In the final 2.55 cutscene, Thancred goes on about not having interests in doing it with men when the guards go to arrest him, etc. There were A LOT of major changes. Even in 3.1 the dialogue in Japanese did not match the english version.
  2. The main problem that people seem to have with the change is the reason why it occurred, not so much that there was a change in the first place. If they changed his personality because they wanted to match his 2.0 one, that's a fine reason. But changing him for the reasons that they stated has understandably upset people. This this! I didn't even know they were different until no one knew what I was talking about when I was talked about him like he was a crazy nut job. I can see why the change was made though...if you don't know Japanese and/or understand Japanese media archetypes, you'd get thrown for a loop. I think people do get thrown off when things are changed though...and don't understand how localization works. I work on manga for a living and edit it for english speaking audiences for graphic novel releases. One of my series gets rid of all the Japanese references entirely because they really don't make sense. For example, a lot of the monsters in the series are puns in Japanese so we have have to make them into English words. Denshark is my favorite example because it's a shark that is a train (Densha=train + rk at the end...). We made it Choo Choo Chomper and some fan berated me for it (even though I wasn't working on it at the time) but the general english reader would have no idea what the hell Denshark was. The translation and adaptation process is much more complex than people realize. Personally, I understand it. But a lot of people don't do this kind of work for a living and don't get why it exists in the first place...
  3. A bright flash of aether crackled in front of the Mythril Wings Free Company house and a weary Elezen man, dressed in his finest for court, stumbled forward in a stupor of fatigue. Asheloux had just finished yet another long day navigating the social debacle that was Ishgard high society and he wore his weariness on his sleeve. The night air around the house was still and Asheloux quietly padded with perfectly trained silence towards the door. Once in the safety of his own room, the lights flickered on before nearly stumbling over the pile of books next to his desk. He groaned as he finally slid into his desk chair. He sat there, motionlessly, for some time, dragging his hand over his face as to wipe the exhaustion away. As his hand dragged down his face, the crimson and gold blinder over his right eye gave way revealing the dull, white iris underneath. He winces as a familiar tug seems to pull at his skull as his own aether slowly started to leak. “Damn…” He muttered quietly, lowering his hand onto a small stack of papers and pushing them to the floor, “It never ends here, does it?” Asheloux slowly and carefully extended his hand towards the bottom of his desk and briefly channeled a bit of aether into the wood. An ornate symbol flashed briefly before the panel immediately gave way. Inside the panel was another panel. Leaning into the desk, his white eye searches the area, mapping out an intricate flow of aether in his vision before finding a fixed gap. He tapped a single finger against the empty area and the panel gave way once more. Inside was a strange contraption covered by a single cut of ivory, silk cloth. He peels it away, revealing two, small metalic-like modules. The workings of the modules were Allagan in design, though currently no light looped through either of them. He reached into the pocket of his robe to pull out two, glowing, blue-ish white crystal. He carefully placed each one on pads attached to the modules and they immediately sprung to life with a low hum. The familiar current flowed freely through the modules and Asheloux nodded with approval. ‘The me six years ago would be furious knowing he would end up losing an eye and causing much injury just build such machine from mere scraps pulled from a storage room,’ He thought to himself as he immediately erased the smirk that had snuck onto his features. Placing a paper weight on one of the modules, he waited only a moment for it to vanish and reappear on the other. “At least it works…” he said out loud before glancing towards the sliding door that divided his chamber. He immediately stood up from his desk and pushed the door open. There were two empty beds facing him as he gazed into the darkness. At some point his breath had caught and he immediately found himself gasping for air as though he had been holding it in for a long time. Just as soon as he had started the experiment, he ended it, replacing the device, locking all the wards that concealed it, and replacing the blinder of his eye. He wandered to his own bed at the far end of the divide, sliding past a mountain of books to fall flat on his face in the bedding. He rolled onto his side and stared at the empty bed next to his. His eye narrowed and a frown followed. “What am I so worried about…?” He rolled over the other way towards the window and sighed heavily, shaking his head, "Azys Lla will be a nice distraction, I guess."
  4. I have Kasumi who I've RP'd on all of...one or two times and then switched her with Zeph... So she's a level 46 alt... But! Is a Doman Ninja >>
  5. I can throw Ashe at him. Also contact Xavarian Mystrife. He's a duskwight who mends and binds books and is super nerdy and super awesome (Dasair on this forum). .... I imagine he's gonna post here at some point too >>
  6. http://jp.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/news/detail/30e7867ce3f931adfc7f2c4861e5e470cbb6e1ed Jp site finally reported on it. But it's up again.
  7. Now I know why no one was getting why I thought he was a crazy nutjob asshole with a heart of gold. He loved adventurers and loved the WoL (your character). I donno what his english dialogue was since I played of 2.0-2.55 with Japanese text and audio...but the Japanese Haurchefant is the only one I know and love <333 THEN AGAIN. I'm a weird lady who likes those types of characters >.<
  8. Wasn't logged in but facebook group for the server is also reporting it down.
  9. I have to say I'm not looking to turn this into a FC. A Linkshell is as far as I'm planning. My goal here is to simply get people talking to each other, regardless of what FC they're in and what not. That said it would be interesting to have people of multiple Pirate crew FCs join in a single Linkshell as that would broaden the contact between these groups and facilitate interaction. Ah, my point was that there is definitely interest, not to join their FC haha. SKY PIRATE FC/FLEETS ALLIANCE IN LS WOULD BE SUPER COOL THOUGH JUST SAYING. Sorry, I love Sky Pirates. Balthier for life *A*
  10. I want a sky pirate alt soooo bad. I love sky pirates >.< I know there are people in my FC who are considering making alts to start their own sky pirate fc...
  11. Updates! Azys Lla starts 11/28 Could always use more people for dungeon groups so even if you're not in our FC, if you have an IC reason to head out there, contact us!
  12. I can throw Ashe or Zeph at you. Zeph's wiki isn't done but he's a rogue in the Rogue's Guild who is whimsical and likes to push people's buttons but is all serious business when there is serious business to be had. Ashe has a wiki that is mostly up-to-date that you can poke through. He's also hotheaded haha... Sorry I don't have any female characters to throw at you as my Xaela failed miserably and still leveling my Raen who will be a Ninja. So yeah.... Fun stuff! I am not for tavern RP. My FC and I are all about character development and dangerous, IC expeditions so it's all development and crazy plots all the time!! (If you're in the market for an FC too xPP http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=11667) I'm bad about checking RPC threads but send me a tell in game and we can plot, kick butt, go on an adventure, etc. etc. etc.
  13. Ashe

    Aliases

Yeah... Ashe's last name in the game doesn't match his IC last name since he was adopted and I'm too lazy to name change him. His last name is kind of an alias of sorts... People just take it as his last name...though if you read his wiki, it's obviously not? Zeph's name is also an alias. It makes me sad thinking about who would call him by his full name when he never reveals it to anyone..... Someone in my FC also has a character whose display name is an alias/nickname. I donno...you do you on this one?
  14. There's nothing wrong with that. But a lot of the time on these very forums, I see constructive criticism turn into snarking, sniping, and being very harsh as opposed to constructive. There's a lot of threads on this forum I've observed where people come in name-calling (again, the whole 'edgy', 'snowflake', etc) just because that person doesn't like the idea, and instead of being constructive, they're douchey. Jokingly making fun of each other's stuff among people you hang with is different from bashing people's ideas because you don't like them. Keep in mind I'm using 'you' as a general statement here, I'm not actually directing that at you personally. But I do see it a lot on the forums here especially. I know people get tired of addressing the same topics, and that's part of it, but still. I adjust to most things, myself. It might be because I'm old, and I've been at this for so long, I just like to see what people will do. Not having a life also means I have a little more time to waste, overall. Maybe it's that. I dunno. But yeah, words are hard. I think words should be outlawed. We could communicate by waving fish around. That might be fun. Especially since a lot of topics around here tend to flounder anyway. >> Yes, that!! I seem to have forgotten my coffee today, so words are not on my side...
  15. This is an odd statement for me because with me it's only partially true. I honestly don't RP with people who meet my asshole bias. What decides mostly who I don't RP with is their player and their behavior towards others more than their characters. If I know someone's an asshole, tends to shit talk about people, fuck people over, don't play reindeer games with them because they're snobbish, cliquish, etc. I don't really want to roleplay with them. No matter how lore compliant or cool their characters are or how many people say they're awesome. The only bias I have against actual characters or character ideas are ones that are made to make fun of minorities, groups, or sexualities specifically. So I suppose in a sense this statement is true for me, but it kind of errs into common sense territory in that regard. But I'm also quite open minded otherwise. I've gotten into RP with ERP-centric/focused characters before, and turned it via conversation and interaction into normal everyday RP, because even if someone's specifically looking for one thing, it doesn't mean they eschew the other, if you can turn it in that direction. Through effort and attention, a lot can be done. News on that at eleven. But, that brings me to my view. The problem is, in this community I've noticed, a lot of simply judging or being personally biased turns into shaming, mocking, and shit-talking. It's one thing to say that something isn't up to your standards, but it seems to be that a lot of people want to roleplay police and use 'the community standard' as their Captain America shield. I've seen a lot of threads asking about something, and while it starts as constructive discussion, certain individuals tend to come in and just bash the unholy hell out of someone's concept or idea and state why they're wrong as fact rather than opinion, then shut down any arguments or facts to the contrary and sit on their soapbox, calling them selfish, or lazy, or other such things. That's more than a standard, that's being intolerant. The amount of close-mindedness generally has nothing to do with actual standards, and everything to do with heavy biases or past experiences that went sour. These things are different. For example. Someone may be playing a world-hopper. (This seems to be a hot topic.) Instead of interacting with this person IC and thus, IC deciding that maybe this person is crazy, which is very viable, they instead decide to never RP with this person, who outside of the character idea they may not like otherwise may very well be an excellent roleplayer. But the moment someone hits another person's bias meter, they never want to RP with that person, even if they run into another character of theirs that may be entirely lore compliant. The thing about having standards is that standards aren't always able to be met by everyone, and when people tend to bunch into groups, as people are wont to do, it cuts people out that otherwise would be fun to play with. Standards often also tend to create tension as much as doing any weeding out, especially I've noticed, with people that hug lore like a bible, despite the fact the lore has a lot of holes and inconsistencies at times. That, and this community has some of the worst standards of character idea tolerance I've come across in my 20+ years of roleplay. Don't get me wrong; I have seen worse, but this is in the top 10 by far. If I had a dollar for every instance of the words 'edgy' or 'special snowflake' uttered casually by people in a snide fashion at some just asking for opinions, I'd be sitting on Trump money. There are some accepting people. I've met some. But I also see a lot of judgment. And I don't mean casual judgment based on standards, or 'I don't agree with this idea, but best of luck'. I mean snobbery, mockery, and disdain before they ever get a chance to interact with someone more than once or twice. I agree with OP to some extent. It is good to be open minded and not be judgmental. And I disagree to some point; we are allowed to have our own standards because we do want to have fun and not have our time wasted. But I also know some people will sit in their own corners, play in their sandboxes, and pull a George Lucas and kick all the toys out they don't like and say 'my sandbox'. And that makes me a little sad. I think we should all be a little more accepting and open, or at the very least, not be complete douche canoes about it when we don't like something. Giving someone a chance may indeed waste your time. But you might also be pleasantly surprised. You never know. Just my two gil. If you see THAT much disdain for other people's stuff, then you're hanging with the wrong crowd. I don't really RP with people who sit in a corner and talk about people they don't RP with/randomly see on the street in Ul'Dah and make fun of them, etc. If you're hanging with those kinds of people, then maybe find a new group. My FC will sometimes make fun of each other's stuff because it's legit funny and fun to joke about out of context. But ripping on other people is not okay. Making suggestions, constructive comments with concrete examples, answering someone's question honestly with examples and back up comments and suggestions...I don't see what's wrong with that. Having standards is okay though. I have them and I've adjusted to other people who may not be used to certain levels of RP. My hope usually that that person will expand what they try, etc. Ahhhhh I forgot what I'm trying to say...words >.<
  16. ... WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST SEE. O_o This was great, lol I cried when I got to this. Like legit. Cried.
  17. I died when I saw this. 3.1 just ripped on Alphinaud haha. Ugly Duckling's is also funny.
  18. Looking good ALWAYS you mean. I was gonna steal our FC's Elezens....no fair.
  19. We all gravitate towards roleplay that is consistent with our own style and preferences. There is nothing wrong about this. It is unfortunate, however, when a preference or style turns into a "standard," which closes the door to many potentially valuable forms of roleplay and scenes. If you say you're not guilty of that, I'd have to call your bluff. No one is innocent of letting their biases dictate which RP they choose to pursue...or not.
  20. I'm like this too. I'll RP with anyone who asks, but if I don't like what happens the first few times, I am kind of convinced it won't change. It's like watching a TV show. You watch a few episodes, decide if you like it or not and if you don't, you don't engage with it. If I'm not drawn in the first handful of tries...it's not going to work.
  21. Yeah, I have to agree with Etienne. There are certain things regarding RP that I personally look for and I think everyone has a bias towards certain things whether they admit it or not. For me, if I see that your main objective in your RP is a sexual relationship between characters, I will judge someone on that and distance myself from that RP because that is not what I am looking for. I can agree that directly telling someone off for their choices isn't right. But explaining to someone why their idea may not be accepted or why it may be more challenging than it's worth really isn't the same as telling someone off. If you're going to come from out of nowhere with some crazy idea that may not make sense to 98% of RPers, most people won't accept it. That's just a fact. Everyone has their own standards. I won't ERP. I won't RP in the QS. I have trouble RPing with someone who doesn't type as much as I do because if I start typing paragraphs and they respond with one line, then it gets me nowhere. I won't RP with someone who RPs a different lore set (i.e. if someone is RPing a different FF game in FFXIV or Naruto or some other thing). I won't RP with someone who sexualizes LGBT people for the sake of sexualizing them (looking at all of the guys who RP lesbians as women who will chase anything with lady parts). The list goes on...I have standards. And I bet you have standards too even if you don't want to admit them. I bet there are people who have trouble with how I type because I write like how I have to write for graphic novel scripts. I miss commas because our style has us remove commas for professional publications (context: I am a graphic novel editor). I RP an asshole Elezen who is difficult to be around. He's not nice to entire groups of people for the sake of not being nice to them, etc. I bet there are plenty of people who aren't open to OOCly committing their time to that kind of RP, and I understand that. If you're going to RP, people need to understand that not everyone is going to accept everything everyone puts out there. If someone can't accept that, then they're kind of out of luck. LUCKILY there's a group for just about everything...so if people can't find a group that does what they do then perhaps there is something wrong with what they're doing. That's my two cents... Quick Edit: I've had characters who are outright horrible who I have just had to remove but can RP my other characters much better. THAT is something that exists. But most of the time that's not the case from what I found.
  22. Honestly though, even if it's possible I don't see why there is a need for it? If you want to RP your FFXI character in FFXIV just make an FFXIV version of them. Many FFXIV players haven't played FFXI and will more than likely not accept it as it's RP from a different game/lore/world, etc. Their characters may not accept it either...travel between universes isn't really a well known concept to the average person in Hydaelyn. In the end, it'd be up to the player to make the decision that their character, out of all the people on Vana'diel, was chosen to go to Hydaelyn and be some super amazing whatever. But at that point, you might as well RP a primal or some other god-level mage like Shantotto or whatever. So yeah, it's a matter of do whatever but there's no reason to if you just rework your character to work for Hydaelyn's lore (which there is plenty of)...or, if you want to play FFXI so badly, then play until the servers are closed for good?
  23. Actually, Cloud of Darkness might be the same as FF3, just like Gilgamesh which is always the same in all games. But for the rest, they're probably different things. My point is that there are plenty of things in FFXIV that are from other FF games but it doesn't mean that people from those games are just gonna randomly be coming in to Eorzea like Hey sup! I did not play FFXI 'cause no PC and I didn't really grow up with internet anyways...but regardless of the story I think it's highly unlikely that they would end up in Eorzea. Aaaah quick edit: FF3 and 4 and tactics seem to have more in common with Eorzea stuff than FFXI outside of the face. A lot of the MMO core lore (time/spacial keeping, general race look--which was standard for more than just FFXI...a lot of game shave human-like, elf-like, animal-like, little people-like races--and what not)may have been from FFXI, but lore wise, it's not really connected. A lot of character models seem to be the same and some names (like xys is an upscaled version of abc)...but there's not much story impact from what I'm reading.
  24. Honestly, saying something exists from some other FF game in FFXIV so it must exist is kind of really....I donno. All FF games do this. There is an entire wiki that lists all of the FF game references in FFXIV. Some of the obvious ones: FF3 allusions in the Allagan backstory. Is FF3 the prequel to this game? No >> Matoya and Matoya's cave is from FF1. Did she and her cave travel to Eorzea? Probably not. Elidibus is a summoner in Tactics and he has the summon Zodiark. Did he suddenly decide to become an Ascian and appear in Eorzea and use his summon to destroy Hydaelyn? Prolly not. Golden Saucer in VII Magiteck from VI Cloud of Darkness from 3 (first note) .... The tactics gear from the 60 dungeons... Everything in this link: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XIV/Allusions All FF games do this too. Not just FFXIV You can take it for what it is...but in my personal opinion, it'd be best to just remake the character FOR Eorzea...
  25. 1) I would think it's outlawed everywhere? Someone can correct me if I'm wrong though...but its destructive nature would make it unwelcome just about everywhere. 2) http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=9498&pid=133888#pid133888 [best answer as to why that I've seen] 3) Don't use their magic in public would probably suffice... 4) It's important that your Black Mage have a soulstone. Those who don't will spontaneously combust...Black Magic isn't really void related, so you don't have to be all "Imma summon demons and shit." ... I think that thread I linked is really the best explanation for what it is though...
