  1. Vampire bats are pretty damn cool. Their saliva is like topical Novocain and a blood thinner. They just poke a little hole and lick lick lick lick and then fly away into the clouds.
  2. Honestly, I can see how some people might be under the misconception that because Roleplay is pretending, you can pretend to be anything your heart desires. Thing is, you are bound by the universe in which you play. You cannot be a werewolf, or a vampire in our world because they do not exist. You can be a vampire or a werewolf in a pretend version of our world that you imagined, but that is because you are the creator of that reality. Square Enix is the God of Eorzea. They are the creators and destroyers of everything that exists in the worlds of Final Fantasy and our characters are subject to their whims. We could find out that Lalafell only eat candy and were created to be the slovenly servants of the Roegadyn and make toys for all the Roe children in the North pole, and that would be lore because Enix wrote it that was. The creativity we are allowed to explore here is not limited by our imaginations; its limited by Enix's imagination team. You could be a succubus like Amandine Haukke and gain power through the suffering of others and the selling of your soul. You could feast on blood and be a slave to the night or anything Enix puts in the lore of Succubi. Succubi in Enix lore is not the same as Succubi in IRL lore, so you always need to be sure you know everything you can about what you are playing. The parameters are predefined and not up to you to alter.
  3. Thread title: " Plausibility of Vampire RP " Which would designate the subject of the thread to the plausibility of vampire RP. Definition: Plausible [plaw-zuh-buh l] adjective Having an appearance of truth or reason; seemingly worthy of approval or acceptance; credible; believable. Translation OP has titled the thread in a way that would lead any who visit it to assume that the subject at hand is whether or not Vampire RP is acceptable, credible, and believable in Final Fantasy 14. There are no context clues that suggest otherwise in the post. Answer It is not. Conclusion You get the answers you ask for. If the point of the thread is not what you stated it to be, then either change the title to adequately suit your actual request, or accept the feedback of the community that is answering you honestly. We want to help you succeed and have a positive RP experience. [Edited to add on to my points]
  4. It seems like the GM wasn't totally understanding, and may have been pasting macros. Perhaps English isn't the first language...though he/she did correct a typo. I just feel like Enix handles tech support like most companies.
  5. Or, you know, don't pick fights with strangers. That's just generally good advice. If you do, though, talking about it OOC is probably a good idea. Nono. That's where the future conditional comes in. OOC communication isn't really needed unless youre going to do something potentially damaging or violating
  6. I giggled and made a face. And then my co-worker looked over and accused me of being up to no good.

    Critical Hit

OMG. Okay...this is my favorite one. So this was Wildstar in my Exile merc guild. We were out in Aurin territory with all kind of flowers and plants and shiz. We get ambushed by Dominion soldiers. My character is a sexy warrior man who used to live in the Dominion home world until he was framed. His sword is a chainsaw sword. Get this: We're in the fight, and turns out one of the Dommies is a former ex of my main, Larson. I roll a crit, and turn up the shock value- Larson grabs the soldier around the waist, leans in really close....and kisses him long and hard. As the kiss happens, Larson slides his chainsaw sword along the ground and positions it between the other man's legs. *vroom* *screaming* *blood* It was a literary act of ultra-violence with heavy descriptors and oh so satisfying.
  8. Future tense is hands down the best way to open end a combat RP. Present tense requires understanding of written language to adequately account for the possibility of change. Past tense means you are constantly retconning history as the RP progresses, which bothers the crap out of me. Noo. Stop it. P.S. Not really sure if the tone that was happening in here was necessary/allowed, but I'll just hope it isn't representative of the community as a whole.
  9. "Otherwise it turned into a game of well-written twister." Excuse me while I make this my forum sig.
  10. Actually warren, Ig explained exactly what the grammatical issues are. A lot of people take grammar in RP as rule. I personally don't like that sentence because it is two actions in one. My character could have long since moved away between the drawing of the sword and the swing toward the neck, but I feel forced to ignore the space and emote a response as if it is one action. If you try to take advantage of the present tense lock, people start getting upset. If he draws the sword and swings it at my neck, but I moved as he was drawing his sword, what is he swinging at? Is he slow? Of course you could add some description like, he draws his sword fast as a whip and in one motion slashes at my neck. Then there is fluidity.
  11. @Bryn: I suppose coming from the community I come from where anything and everything could be used against you OOC, I may have a paranoia of covering my ass to circumvent the accusation of godmoding. If there are any other former GW2 rpers here, they might know what I mean. In combat, future tense becomes the most ideal. If I type, "Vyce twists sideways, attempting to dodge the blow." I can get a nastygram in whisper. Yes, I know how dumb it is. "Vyce would twist sideways, attempting to dodge the blow." runs much less risk of someone getting their jimmies rustled. In spite of my arguments, I don't use future tense all the time. There are actions where I was use present tense. Future tense I'll only use personally when it is an action that heavily depends on the reaction from someone else. I never use future tense (unless by accident) because I am in the moment when I RP. I think of everything as right here and now unless my character is talking about something that happened.
  12. It can easily be handled in past tense. Kage went to the store in the attempt to buy an apple. Stepping in Kage's way to the store, Marshall attempted to grab his arm while pointing a knife at the Lalafell. That's not a possible situation. If Kage went to the store then in present tense he is either there or has long since left. The act of going is in the past. If Kage is on his way to the store, Marshall can attempt to grab his arm. The most Marshall can do with the past tense is assault him in the store or try to steal the apple he already bought. Or idk just try to stab him for no reason, as long as it is not while Kage is on the way to the store...because he already went.
  13. No it cannot. If "She went to the store" you cant grab her arm and stop her. She already went. If "She goes to the store" you cannot prevent her from going because she did it. If "She is going to the store" you can grab her arm and delay her, but she will still go sooner or later unless she changes her mind. The only completely interactive one is future tense. Future tense has an unspoken IF.
  14. I've already addressed this in the opening post, as some people do it outside of just making sure that they're not taking away the other roleplayers' agency. They use it for everything. These are cases were someone is going to do it. There's no ifs, ands or buts. There's no other person that would be there to say "NO YOU CAN'T WALK DOWN THIS STREET I HAVE AGENCY OVER THIS." It's just seeing... "She would go to the store and see if there were apples in stock." She's going to go to the store. Except that she might not go to the store if someone in the alley grabbed her and pulled her away into the shadows never to be seen again. Using future tense leaves an opening for more to happen. Adventurous RPers that are open to random encounters and unexpected things happening often use future tense in actions that could well be interrupted because they see the opportunity for the RP to be more than just apples. Another alternative is that you grab her arm and tell her to stay with you longer. She WOULD go to the store IF nothing prevents her from doing it right now. Future tense is used as a courtesy to others around that opens up the possibility of a change. Present tense uses a lot of absolutes: "She eats the apple." cannot be interrupted, because the moment you post it, the action is finished. You cannot interrupt the eating of the apple because she ate it. "She is eating the apple" is better, because the action can be changed, but you cannot change that she was eating it. "She ate the apple" is self explanatory. There is not a whole lot of difference between past tense and present absolute. "She would eat the apple" can be allowed, prevented, or altered. Future tense creates the most opportunity for diversion.

  16. Ok, you have caused me to reassess what it is I plan to play. I guess I wouldn't need it to be soley used for gaming as I have consoles already that fill that role. What I'll likely use it for is mostly MMOs like the ones you listed as well as some games from Steam. I do want to be able to run these games on the highest settings and have it run smoothly. MMOS tend to be much easier on your system as far as graphics go. I suppose the science behind that has to do with the fact that the servers need to be able to process for millions of people at once (but that's why culling exists). Newer RPGs may be a little more difficult. I recall my old laptop was fine with GW2 but could not handle the graphics of Mass Effect 3, nor could it handle cutscenes in Black Flag. (disclaimer: I make no claims to understand how computers work)
  17. I should also comment that most of my gaming is done on either a glass table, which seems to keep it very cool or my lap. Apparently having your laptop on your lap for hours and hours and hours can radiate your reproductive organs and cause sterility. It hasn't happened yet but meh, as long as I get digital gratification. #gamerproblems It does occasionally get hot, but I am a barbarian and I do not own a cooling pad nor care enough to get one.
  18. You want to know the honest truth? You don't need a dedicated gaming laptop. They are wildly expensive and are not necessary unless you really feel like splurging. I play FF14, GW2, and Wildstar all on maximum graphics settings on my 17.3" HP. I am not technobabble literate, but from what I know, its Windows 10 (I bought it at the beginning of 8) has dual graphics AMD cores, and like a terabyte of space. It cost me around $750. It's a mid-grade graphic design laptop that I bought when I thought I would teach myself to draw barazoku on tablet rather than paper. Which was a pipe dream. A dedicated gaming laptop will cost you around $2000 if you go for the be all end all (alienware derp)
  19. I see. I see I see I see. So~ let's see if this works: Vyce's immediate family was in the earliest wave of refugees to leave Ala Mhigo. His parents were merchants (though they lost 95% of their assets) and knew Limsa Lominsa was their best hope to find sanctuary without eating dirt. They also knew the twelveswood had some sort of trial for entry, and that Ul'Dah was so populated and busy that the most likely outcome was the life of a pauper. In their greed, Vyce's parents purposefully misdirected some refugees away from Limsa in their travels so that they might raise their chances of reclaiming quality of life. Acquaintances and friends from trade took them in until they could get back on their feet, and over the years they did. At the unapologetic expense of others. Eventually Vyce's father was found by retribution and beaten to death in the name of Rhalgr. His mother remarried a year later to ship captain, and has been sailing the seas with him since the kids left the nest. She, through means unknown, had managed to become an adept Astrologian, but never revealed who trained her. Not even to her kids. She acts as the ship's navigator. She did teach Thoreaux a little about divination. Thoreaux apprenticed at the Arcanist Guild after his father's death (in case we haven't established the man was a dick, "No son of mine is going to wield anything but a blade. You're a Vyce. Act like it."), studied a little conjury and thaumaturgy, and eventually managed to be a scholar. At age thirty, he has heard there is a resurgence of Astrologians and is determined to become one. And profit.
  20. I imagine being a black mage in the heat of battle would be incredibly extreme. I can imagine something that makes you want to explode along with the battlefield. It has to be dark, yet proud. Like this: BIM7rZOJMSU
  21. Oh he would never lie. He would just...choose his phrasing with the intent to maximize profits. It's not a crime to embellish. I have no idea what we're talking about though. Is this an RPer? An NPC? I need links.
  22. Dubious...that's actually accurate. Vyce will be a legitimate oracle but his services...might sometimes be so illegitimate that they would fail the paternity test. Please share more about this Dubious Goods.
  23. Hey all, So as I climb the level ladder and prepare to transfer to Balmung tomorrow, I'm in the market for a FC so I can hit the ground running. I have an aspiring Scholar/Astrologian and Goldsmith whose heart and loyalties belong to the pursuit of knowledge and the acquisition of money. I plan on ICly offering a kooky degree of divination services with a chaotic neutral alignment. Sometimes services are rendered clean and legal. Sometimes he cashes in on desperation, "Oh well that's an extra 200 gil. And there's a service charge of 50 gil. Here I'll tally up your bill for today...hmm.......carry the five....divide by- oh I meant multiply silly me ah! The total coast of me divining where your 5 year-old son was taken is about...24,017 gil. Plus another three hundred if he's still alive...it's not like speed-reading is easy especially under this kind of pressure. Serial killers aren't exactly predictable you know."
  24. Wind-Up Thoreaux You must look within yourself for the answer...unless you have cash on you now. Interactions: Insert coins into this minion's belly to hear one of twenty predetermined fortunes at random.
  25. Just for fun, the wiki short descriptions of the meanings of those cards are as follows: Death: Typically it implies an end, possibly of a relationship or interest, and therefore implies an increased sense of self-awareness—not to be confused with self-consciousness or any kind of self-diminishment. The hermit actually no longer has an interpretation on Wikipedia, so allow me: The hermit is a guide, an elder, or an obstacle. The thing you must pass on your way to the next step in your life. This is the gate guardian in your life. The parent who has raised you that you must eventually leave behind. It is the bully that you need to stand up to and from which you will gain your confidence. It could be as simple as the guy at the gas station who tells you where to find the Hilton. You will always cross paths with the hermit on the path of life. You -must- cross paths with the hermit to proceed.
