I've yet to find anyone that OOCly refused to do rolls, and if somebody's that dead-set on NO HOW WOULD MY CHARACTER NOT BEAT YOURS then I'm not terribly eager to do any RP with them. Oskwell's a hard character to provoke into a fight to begin with.

Let's talk about Valve new addiction to the Workshop
Flashhelix replied to Desu Nee's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Imagine, with this new-aged system in place, what would happen if say Elder Scrolls 6 was free, or something like 10-20 dollars and they from day one they enabled modders to do w/e they want and charge w/e they want. The base game is good, fun, but then your shown all the mods you could buy and expand the game with - if you want. Mods that range from stupid shit like dildo swords to those giant mods in Skyrim that add whole new realms. Would there be anything wrong with this? I wonder what kind of mods we'd get then, and how quickly they'd be made if their creators knew, from the start, that they could not starve and make something worth their time. Think about all those giant fucking mods we've seen over the years die out due to lack of effort, time, energy, and money. Now imagine people being able to try and make ambitious mods like that, especially if they are onto something people would want to buy, and know that they can live off of it. I'd prefer to think about all the massive mods that have succeeded due to people loving to do it and not needing the incentive of money to actually produce something worthwhile, IE how things have been going for nearly two decades in the modding scene. So I'd excuse people for not being too optimistic for what is basically the Evolve DLC shit x10000 and with the money going to different places. I'm of the opinion people should be enabled to get paid to do what they love, like modding or drawing art for people to buy of their FF characters. If someone wants to use Valves system, and charge a penny for their mod to Skyrim out of altruism, by all means why not? If someone wants to earn something back for the time they spent modding a game, why not? Because it didn't happen 10 years ago? Bethesda has a track record of releasing games with quite a lot of features lacking, (correctly) anticipating that modders will fix any issues. If paid mods become commonplace, then the idea of paying a good amount in addition to the 60+ dollar game you've already bought just to make said game playable is very much possible, and while the thought of a modder being rewarded for their effort (which already happens, see donations) is nice, it hardly helps the consumer side of things. -

Combat RP - Skirmishes, Melees, and General Kerfuffles
Flashhelix replied to Verad's topic in RP Discussion
My personal doctrine for any differences in powerlevels is, if you're roleplaying a character that is supposed to be a fighter who would be capable enough to hold their own, or, in your opinion, would be more capable than their opponent, then the way to make it so that you're not a chore to RP with is just to assume they're the same strength as their opponent. One can easily roleplay their character being weaker or a less skilled fighter than another, but when you start to get into who's stronger than who things get messy. -

Even if rep counts served NO purpose whatsoever, they shouldn't be removed. Something shouldn't be removed just because it doesn't serve a purpose, only if it has a negative impact, and from what I've seen, the claims that rep somehow has a large enough negative impact to warrant removing it are pretty overblown. I don't mean to barnacle anybody's bricks, but it'd be like me saying that people with better avatars are given all the attention over people without them.

I haven't seen anything even remotely resembling this. Hint-hint. If you post, and then somebody with a higher rep posts, then people start responding to that person's post instead of yours, chances are that those people know that person, and are their friends. So if we're gonna start demonizing having friends on the RPC then I think there's gonna be a serious case of butts in the mustard, friend But no one said we are demonizing having friends until you did, and we both know that you knew that wasn't my point. I'm also skeptical that hiding the fact that someone joined two weeks ago versus two years ago does that, or that someone who has 30 posts compared to 3000 posts all of a sudden having an equalized voice ala post count/rep hidden does that. everybody already has an equalized voice, this is one shabby sheila of an argument here, we've got radish up to our quarterstacks and the meaning of my post wasn't clear rep/post counts only have meaning to people who don't have them and thus blame the lack of such on why they don't get more attention than they'd like, an artificial problem

I remember first joining the RPC and coming into my first thread, where I was shown just how many things the reputation system negatively affects. For anyone still thinking the blame on the rep system is excessive, I dare you to listen to my story. There I was, a young, innocent, and optimistic roleplayist. I saw the screenshots thread, and figured a good way to introduce myself to the community was by posting a screenshot of my character. So I did. Oh, how wrong and foolish I was. Immediately, the negative and toxic posting began. "Get a load of this nerd! Not even ONE rep point!" I saw, my heart sinking and a mix of shock and shame overcoming me. The horrible posts continued "What the frack does this nerdball think he's doing? He's trying to follow my post with an unrelated one of his own, and he doesn't even have a TENTH of the rep I do!" was what I heard from thread to thread, on and on. I tried to boost my rep by making honestly kind and caring posts. "Your character looks great!" "You're a wonderful person!" I'd boast. But my rep count stayed low. Those villains were MISUSING the rep system. While I was doing honest posting, those fiends were posting snarky and vile comments against good roleplayists, thus tricking people into liking their posts! I was shocked and horrified, but the words of the high-rep posters rang in my ears. "Your post didn't even have ONE reaction face or snappy comment in it! What the fuck are you even doing here?" And the inevitable FALSE-LIKING of their post that would come. The growing approval for these horrible toxic posts spiraled out of control. I can still hear a sound in my head every time I feel one of their posts upvoted by something falsely thinking that they said something worth liking. Ding. Ding. Ding. DINGDINGDING. Like an unholy steel triangle, I felt these dings piercing my very skin. And now here I am. I quickly learned that, to survive in the harsh, dog-eat-fat cat world of the RPC, I had to get tough, and get mean. Most importantly, I had to get TOXIC. There's no going back for me. My soul is long gone, but maybe this new, fresh-faced roleplayer generation can be saved from the toxicity. Just maybe.

In the last three roleplay communities I've been a part of, I've seen this exact topic come up. Somebody citing a supposed "toxic" atmosphere and lamenting the downfall of the once-great roleplayist gathering spot, but I don't buy it. This isn't some Toxic Avenger shit, it's not like one day everybody on the RPC took a road trip together and got hit by sludge that turned them all into jaded assholes. More and more disagreements are happening and more and more times the solution is to complain about MUH TOXICITY or MUH TROLLING or something like that. I can see multiple threads recently where people are getting offended over nothing. It feels like people just want to be outraged at this point.

When Oskwell still had both of his eyes, he was somewhere firmly between a 3 and a 2. Nowaday's it's more of a solid 4, edging into 3 territory at times, but I like to have my characters' powerlevels fluctuate depending on the roleplay anyway. It's not much fun for anybody when you're roleplaying a bunch of skilled-yet-most-definitely-flawed characters trying to overcome the odds and Sir Killbart Maimfucker runs in with his double-axes that shoot aetherical lightning and one-shots everything.
