Yeah, sounds good to me! I'll be around later, if I forget just poke me. An IC LS for resistance stuff would be cool, but even an OOC one would be beneficial, I think. I don't know if my character is even in a position where she'd want to be involved in the Resistance anymore, but I looooove having people she would recognize from those days show up. Tormenting my characters, for great justice.

Honestly, I'd really love an LS for this- it'd make it a lot easier to meet other folks who's characters were/are part of the resistance. Plot out shared backstories. That sort of thing.

Roleplayer Uncertainty/Insecurity Theater
Diskwrite replied to Warren Castille's topic in Character Workshop
My biggest insecurity right now has to do with the fact that I just don't have the energy or inclination to RP constantly anymore. As I approach my oncoming quarter life crisis, I really want to focus more on my personal creative projects, such as art or writing. Or I'm just tired a particular day and don't really feel up to it! But there's so many people who've expressed interest in RPing with me- I don't want to leave anyone out! But there's just no way I can devote the time and energy into interacting with everyone as much as they'd like. It's a little overwhelming- this isn't a problem I've had before. But it makes me feel really bad when someone expresses clear interest in meeting Ojene or interacting with me, and I just don't have that same excitement. Not because they did anything wrong or bad, but because I don't know how I'm going to work in interacting with them when there's all the other stuff I want to do, too. :c Sooo I've been trying my best, but... still. Guh. -
Lookin' gooood!

Physical differences between Duskwight and Wildwood
Diskwrite replied to Ashe's topic in RP Discussion
RE: the species discussion- Creatures that sexually reproduce are generally considered to be of the same species if they can interbreed- and produce fertile offspring. Which is why all dogs are the same species "dog," but all the varieties of dog are referred to as "breeds." -
...Oh dear. I'm hiding in my Duskwight caves again.

Walk-up RP is great, but I have to be in the right mindset for it. It's got to do with my introversion and occasional social anxiety. Sometimes I just don't have the mental energy to do a random RP on the fly. So if someone wants to approach me, I really really appreciate a /tell first. It helps me get in the mindset of "hey random RP." Unless I'm at a public or open RP event, in which case I'm already looking to RP with everyone. :3

Looking for healers of all skill levels
Diskwrite replied to Magellan's topic in Chronicled Connections
I've got a character that's a healer in training- I'll try to poke you sometime later today if you're around. -
You could do all three of those things if you wanted. I think it'd be neat. If you're looking to spice things up, I'd start thinking about where he comes from. Who his family was. What ideology and values he'd be raised with. How he responded to that and how it shaped him. Those are some of the biggest things I start thinking about after I establish a base for a new character. You can have a character with a relatively boring background, but the way you play them is notable simply because of how they approach/think about the world.

I agree, actually. I like to think in my case it was a situation of not noticing the pot was boiling; Warren remains a semi-public figure and is always open to people striking up with him (and I love it, too! It's fun!), but then plot continued to happen and he hardened up over the years. It's come up in the RPChat about how to get around or rectify that sort of thing. I'm pretty terrible at arranging things, but I will give it a college try if someone asks me to meet up with them for something. Yeah, in my case, it wasn't an intentional thing. It just evolved naturally from the backstory I'd built for her... as well as the problems I kept throwing her way. And don't get me wrong, I loved RPing her. So much so, when I switched games, I didn't want to leave her behind. But I did age her up, when I took her to FFXIV and made Ojene. And I didn't put her through quite as much backstory trauma as I did her WoW version. (Which, if you read Ojene's wiki, you might be surprised at. I AM SO MEAN TO MY CHARACTERS.) So Ojene's a hell of a lot more approachable. And the response to her has been fantastic! But also... a little overwhelming. I wish I had the time and energy to RP with everyone who's been interested, but I don't. Spending all my freetime RPing isn't an appealing prospect these days. Sooo, I've had to pick and choose, which unfortunately means leaving some people out. Bringing it back to the topic at hand, unfortunately this might be a problem when you're seeking out these "RP crushes." But I think, you'll never know unless you ask!

If you end up venturing over to Balmung, my FC, DM-RP, has a lot of EU folks in it. (I'm not EU myself, though!) It's a pretty small FC and errs on the quieter side, but if you're interested in light, casual RP, it's a great group of people. We've also got open RP events at 3PM EST every Sunday at our FC house (the Drunken Moogle, which is a tavern/inn), in the Lavender Beds at ward 4, plot 8. Which anyone is more than welcome to show up at! There's a tumblr for the Drunken Moogle, but since I'm at work right now I can't really get to the link. Hurr...

I hope this thread doesn't derail, then. I always give solid questions so people keep in mind the focus of my threads.:cactuar: I'm an alt juggler kind of roleplayer myself, I think I couldn't deal with having only one character that isn't flexible when it comes to meeting other characters. Since I have more than one characters, it gives me more than one RP route, and it gives me even more goodies plot potential...And even more RP crushes. Save me from my misery. When you say that tho, it means you've tried RPing with them? This isn't a problem Ojene's had so much as her WoW incarnation did- she was so closed from people, sometimes it was hard to make new RP connections. Folks would try to interact with her! But more often than not, she'd push them away with an alienating aura. Espeeeecially if she was on the job. I've never been good at keeping up with alts, so... this meant my RP opportunities were a bit on the limited side.

If you didn't have a means to get acquainted with them via an LS, FC, mutual friend, or something like that... I'd suggest just being polite and straightforward. Be like, "Hey, I've seen you around, and your character/writing/etc. seems really interesting. Would you be interested in RPing with me sometime?" And then link them your character wiki or something like that- if they're interested- to give them an opportunity to feel things out. Obviously some folks will be more amenable to it than others, but I think this kind of approach is a good general policy to follow. Just remember that sometimes, if this sort of introduction doesn't work, sometimes it's just that the RPer in question has too much going on already. @_@ Which... is a situation I've gotten myself into more than once, hah...

How do you guys go about wearing your experience?
Diskwrite replied to Zelmanov's topic in RP Discussion
This is something I prefer to let show organically. Age and the weight of combat experience shapes a person and how they comport themselves. So my two Duskwight siblings- Ojene, a 52-year-old war veteran; and Jophoix, her 21-year-old brother who has barely stood witness to any real combat in his life- approach people with a very different air. When Ojene has occasion to talk about her experiences (and when she decides to share them, which isn't always...), she will. But she doesn't go into long explanations of her life very often. Nonetheless, since I've got so much of it plotted out, it shapes how she interacts with people, and how she responds to things. It comes out, in subtle ways. I don't need to have her go on and on about all she's been through to give people the notion that she's been around the block a few times. This isn't really the specific answer I think you were looking for, but I think portraying this sort of experience without beating your audience over the head of it is a subtle thing. If your character carries it around with them and it affects what they do, people can tell there's something more going on there... even if they don't know exactly what it is. -
This is absolutely fantastic, thank you!

Do we have a list of all the locales visited for the pilgrimage Llymlaen followers take? I've only been able to find 2 locations: Cassiopeia Hollow and Shposhae.

I don't have an Ala Mhigan, but I have a 52 year old Duskwight who went to Ala Mhigo shortly before the Fall! She fought with the resistance for a couple years and such.

balmung Feisty Ala Mhigan Monk LF more contacts!
Diskwrite replied to Virella's topic in Chronicled Connections
I don't have an older Ala Mhigan, but I do have a 52 year old Duskwight that was there for the Fall and helped fight alongside the resistance for awhile. c: Just let me know if you'd be interested. -
I don't know about leveling second jobs past 50 (I haven't even gotten my first job past 53 yet...), but for leveling to 50, I do something like this: 1-10: Hunt log and class quests 11-15: More hunt log, a few FATEs. Guildheists for the first time when I unlock them (plus the daily guildheist roulette). Once I get there, I'll queue for each dungeon in turn once I reach the level. With the chain XP bonus, this will get you a level. Then I'll do the daily dungeon roulette. That's another level. FATEs and more hunt log can easily take me through the 3rd level... then I get to another dungeon's level! Rinse, repeat.

.... Are you sure they're girls calling you a perv though? No, seriously. I have this policy where unless I hear it on voice chat it's a dude until proven otherwise. It's yet to fail me. ...I'll file that under an additional confession. :cactuar: As a woman who's played in MMOs for well over a decade... that's kind of a dick move. I've known (and know) many, many women through these games. It can be really frustrating when people take a "voice or it didn't happen" attitude- especially when sometimes speaking up with your actual voice invites unwanted attention and harassment. I know the thing you're talking about does happen from time to time, but people assuming male unless told otherwise is a real problem. It contributes to attitudes that games are male-oriented spaces (despite how many female gamers there really are), that women are rarities in gaming communities (even when they're not), and even that women don't really belong there. I'm not saying you think these things, but I want you to be aware of what that sort of approach is part of. (This is also the end of what I'll say about it since I don't want to start a sensitive off-topic argument)

I never used quotation marks until coming to FFxiv. The communities I RPed in before never did it, but it was everywhere here. I don't really care one way or the other- whatever the community norms are for punctuation, I'm perfectly content to follow.

I don't tend to use foreshadowing in ongoing plots just because it's not always easy for me to know where my characters will take something. Especially not the one I've played for the last 3ish years. She's got one hell of a mind of her own, and the inputs of others can make her go a drastically different direction than I thought she would. What I do tend to do is, examine what's going on and where it's probably going, and then come up with satisfying ways for the plot to turn. The last huge plot I RPed through, 2 years of roleplay all came together in what turned out to be a truly amazing experience. Looking back on it all, I could point to things and say "oh, this played a role! and this played a role!" But I didn't know that's where it was going to go, at the time.
-
Hey there! I've got a grizzled middle-aged Duskwight of the Lawful Good persuasion myself (I'm still working on her wiki but there's at least some stuff there now hurrrr), and I bet our characters would get along swimmingly. Let me know if you'd be interested in doing something!

Ojene is 52. She's an Elezen, yeah, but still. She's definitely older.
