The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Valence replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Having tried tanking on the first half levels (meaning, before the job and below lvl30), it's actually a nightmare to correctly hold aggro at such low levels. Either you get overgeared DPS that no matter what you do, will deal more enmity than you. Or just DPS that don't focus fire. At such low level, there is not much rooms for mistakes when dealing with enmity sadly. I think that the game is a bit unforgiving and weirdly designed around that by the way. It should be easier to tank in low level dungeons, not the opposite. Not that your life is threatened or anything, but doing your job can be a nightmare. And it's not going to get any better the more end game gear will get powerful. And I'm not even speaking of the enmity UI that is a joke, pure and simple. It starts showing you that you lost aggro when you already lost it. It's stupid as hell, unless you start rotating continuously between all the mobs to check their individual enmity gauges under every player name. Super user friendly that is, especially when you are doing your rotations. In any case, I am a main WhM/heal and trying my hand at tanking made me see a lot of things under another light. It should get better now that you are lvl41, and get better and better. Most of the retarded/horrors tend to happen at low level, either from inexperienced people that discover their jobs, or high end players that don't want to bother to pay attention to actual roles. -
I was mainly thinking to start up with a linkshell of sorts to kick that up. Get interested people together, talk about the concept and try to refine it, that kind of things. I'm definitely not deadset on everything, but the dream would be to get a group of likeminded people to do something around it. I also reckon that my timezone might be an issue... I'll try to get in touch with you!

Currently still motivated and trying to get that project off the ground. I am also interested into a potential FC built around that, but I reckon that the concept is probably way too specific for that and am thinking to expand on it. I would really love to create something around a group of independent sky tinkerers with various 'underground-harmless' activities like racing, tinkering, a workshop of sorts, magitek activities, and why not doing mech jobs for other organizations as well. Looking for something with flavour! Don't hesitate to reach me out if interested!

I. Basic Info Characters: Suen Shyu Primary character: Suen Shyu Linkshells:Europa, Aeon (restricted), Lemieux (restricted) Primary RP linkshell: None (yet) II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Heavy most of the time, baring a few breaths of air of course. I am always happy to have RP and will actually always put it before anything else (if I'm queued for something or apparently afk or busy, don't hesitate to poke me and I'll probably switch happily for a little RP!). I try to play supportive characters, and that goes more or less the same way for the player behind. I will try to adapt to whoever I'm playing with (up to certain limits). Either way, I'll try to catch the hooks your characters can bring and roll with it, and if not, then my character has her own storyline going providing hooks as well. Length of paragraphs in my ingame RP can vary a lot depending on what my character has to say and the mood she's in. I'm pretty organic when it comes to that, and I don't mind people that are super descriptive or very short in their answers. Just don't spamm me with one-word sentences in quick succession please! Views on RP combat and injuries: Strong believer in IC actions bringing consequences, so I'm open to injuries and anything that could happen if it makes sense. Death and serious mutilation though, would need my consent (death is a clear cut no for now though). I don't believe in any combat system more than another most of the time. I'm fine with rolls, character sheets or free flowing RP with OOC coordination behind, be it RP pve or RP pvp. I'm also wary of the roleplayers that tend to do pve combat like players and not actual roleplayers (meaning emoting how awesome their characters actions are, or like if they are RPing to win and therefore playing like gamers instead of playing their characters). Views on IC romance: Romance is a powerful storytelling tool, but a tool like any other. Nonetheless, OOC coordination behind is mandatory, and I would rather engage in serious IC relationships with people I trust to share the same views. I expect from romance not to only bring happiness and rainbows, but its lot of hardships as well: my character has flaws and will probably not always be the perfect partner there is, like in real life! Maybe some things will not last, maybe some will actually do. In the case of Suen, she tends to separate casual flirt with serious romance. In any case I'm open to it and my character can be pretty liberal about it. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Don't hesitate to tell me! Be it business, family ties, or just gridanian common history. It's actually quite a nice little tool to provide lots of substance and hooks for characters to hang out together or do stuff, be it friendly or confrontational. Views on lore: Strict. No lore breaking. I love and respect the lore and I expect the same from my RP partners. I don't consider lore-bending actually to be a thing (or very specific, like different lore interpretations), and to me there is mostly lore breaking or world building (expanding on existing lore). I'm fine with the latter, but not okay with the former. I can be picky about realism and coherence. I'm not looking for characters that are OP/godmodey/awesome or that reach unrealistic expectations. I'm all for modest, everyday people, that feel human with flaws and qualities. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Everything that is not specific OOC Linkshells or OOC party chat, I consider IC... BUT only when we are actually roleplaying, in a RP setting. If it's out of a RP setting and/or I'm walking around in pve stuff, everything is OOC for me. Don't hesitate to reach me out though, if you want to set up something, and I'll gladly jump into my RP attire and start using /emote /tell /say /party as IC (unless said otherwise, or with brackets). III. Other Info Country:France Timezone:GMT +1 Contact info:Anything you would like. MP here or ingame, or skype if you have something serious in mind. If we go deeper into the elemental wheel theory where astral and umbral are actually polarities that adds a third dimension to the base 6 points wheel (fire, thunder, ice, earth, water, wind), does that follow the same pattern than the naming convention for months (astral and umbral moons, each of those under an element related to their proper divinity patron)? Which means you can get astral fire, umbral fire, etc, depending on their location related to the polarity of the element in question? Translated into crystals, would their colour be slightly different depending on their astral polarity? Everything that I see seems to go into that direction, meaning that the elemental wheel is 6 elements and not 8, most of the calendar is also made the same way, divinities too... (with the exception of the superior ones like Hydaelyn and Zodiark). Or the BLM astral fire / umbral ice which hints strongly at that too in my mind... The only exception I can think of is how moons themselves are structured, which is around the 8 aspects organized into 32 suns.

Hello! Saw you in the rogues yesterday. I knew the name ringed a bell.

balmung Querying Interest..(Nophica Theme)
Valence replied to BluDrew28's topic in Chronicled Connections
That sounds like an interesting project that stands out. I can't really offer anything beyond my moral support, so, good luck! -
Mine as well. She seems blind. Doesn't mean she uses aethersight all the time though. I would be naturally inclined to think she actually does, but I was just playing the devil's advocate.

discussion horticulture - plants and their uses?
Valence replied to Asmrran's topic in RP Discussion
If you are looking for purely lore things, then I guess this could come in handy. -
I wouldn't say I find Heavensward story top-notch, far from it, but it was solid and nice enough, especially compared to the bland 2.0-2.4 (except for the end assault of 2.0, but heh, what would we do without Garlemald). And it got half ruined by the amount of stupid secondary quests everywhere. Sidequests are cancer.

Everyone seems to do that bare a few and... I constantly have to poke people to play with them. It's... super exhausting to say the least, having to constantly keep that friendlist active and all... Especially when I'm not exactly the most extrovert there is... Always feel like intruding, as silly as it sounds.

balmung Looking for a Knightly Themed FC!
Valence replied to Luxanna's topic in Chronicled Connections
It's definitely true, but I also think that's the lazy way of doing things - no offense to anyone, generalist themes can be good too. Even a specific thing with strong flavour can be fleshed out enough to sweep way larger than it seems to be. -

Not even an ishgardian one? Sometimes I see the full roster in the linkshell hall and think "damn, we actually have a lot of FCs and stuff". But well, the themes are often the same though. :c -

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales

The simple fact that they use the same icons and buff and that both behave differently is ludicrous to me, as a heal. -

I have stopped using Touch of Death most of the time. You just barely have the time to execute 2 standard rotations between every Dragon Kick/Twin Snakes refresh in greased lightning III that Touch of Death screws that up most of the time... Sometimes I take the time to apply it among the openers when I can't directly go in greased III, but well. I hate that dot. -

I guess my tolerance treshold is pretty low... As long as we do the dungeon without stupid bullshit like blatant mistakes or trolls or just facepalm worthy stuff... I might get a bit cranky with ludicrously bad DPS players when like last time I ran Sohm Al the ninja was doing less DPS than the tank (somewhere close to the AST heal). I mean, how can you perform so poorly? But what can I say? "Hey dude i'm parsing you and your DPS is abysmal!" and then get reported and banned? But that's fortunately rare enough. -

Valence replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
That's usually the difference between a normal player (with mediocre but okay-ish DPS and only doing that), a good player (with good DPS and optimal rotation but not using supports or interrupts much unless they do damage), and a great player (good DPS and optimal rotation accomodating the use of support skills). Every time I see the latter, which is rare, I immediately comm, even if the tank and heal did great. Like, you know, a MCH or BRD using regens, ninja using goad (those are so rare...), that kind of things. Even when the guy is not great for DPS, the simple care to use those skills is so much appreciated at times... -

If a conjurer can't handle a tank dropping too fast, an AST probably can't either. -
There was only the three core city states as far as I recall: Ul'dah, Limsa and Gridania, leaded by their respective military leaders (Raubahn, Merlwyb and Kan-E Sena). The Holy See of Ishgard declined officially to join in the war against Nael Van Darnus and his meteor project 5 years ago, and so were absent from Carteneau. It was an unfortunate surprise for the rest of the Eorzean alliance since they were allied and intervened in the Autumn War before, where Ala-Migho tried to invade Gridania.

I guess the thing I like with my tastes is that my tastes like lore facts and stuff above everything else, so I usually don't have to worry breaking it.. That's kinda fortunate.

The WoL I play in solo is the Warrior of Light. My IC character I use for RP is my character. They are not the same people. Somehow I find that keeping them totally separate entities is surprisingly easy. It would be even easier if the WoL actually had more than 2 lines of dialog in the whole story and a personality that goes with it, but well. One can dream I guess.

What do you do when you feel like it's a dead-end?
Valence replied to Caex Vaeriar's topic in RP Discussion
Your characters are your creations, and you are god. Some gods let their creations live and strive freely, curious to see where they end up, and some gods play tyrants all the time and provide rigid plots on rails for them to live. Whatever you are, one of both or in between, you are god, and if something you don't like appears, then you can crack the celestial hammer and shatter your character little whims and dreams in pieces. Make them suffer or whatever is warranted and put them in life changing situations.
