The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Valence replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Today in Dusk Vigil, healer says it's the first time he heals there (but not first time in the dungeon), tank immediately drops just after. -
There take is more like the guys in your party are adventurers the WoL (you) hires or go with. It was never stated they are WoL too. That's also where it starts to be schizophrenic since other players think they are also the WoL and you the adventurer sidekick hired for one dire adventure. But that's no different than the 1.0 take where every player is A Warrior of Light Among Many. You still get to defeat powerful enemies and achieve deeds that only one person has done. You. Not the other WoL. And yet, they themselves see the exact opposite thing. Trying to find any logical explanation behind a story that should be played solo and was designed as a solo play and is totally detached from the actual average joe lore... sounds totally silly to me.

It's a RP census with a lot of RP questions, not a pve one... RP main character seems like the logical answer to me...
-
I don't consider personal headcanon on one's own miqotribe or school of aether control or whatever to be lore bending, but rather world building (with all the pros and cons it implies), which means expanding logical conclusions based purely and solely upon lore. It can be dangerous on the long run of course, like every kind of RP, but I believe that as long as you keep it 'regional' (vs 'universal') and pretty situational/lore friendly itself, the risk is rather low. Of course if you don't base it on lore, or take liberties with it, then it's lore bending or even lore breaking. I define bending the lore as a willingness to introduce something that doesn't quite fit with the lore, but doesn't break it outright either. With the caveat of super vague lore that you somehow want to use neverthless, of course. I don't find lore bending to be very spread, it's rather specific in my opinion. Either you break it most of the time (consciously or unconsciously), or either you don't.
-
I usually don't even bend it (or at least not consciously). I am a player that puts the emphasis on the lore a lot (in most settings I roleplay, I love lore stuff, I love discussing it, making theories, etc). I have a good respect for it and find that building upon the existing lore to be way more interesting that making up my own stuff, even if it's more or less lore compliant or inspired by it. I find that unless you get a spark of genius, most player created stuff is usually a lot less appealing to me overall or just doesn't mesh that well within the existing universe.
-
After a bit of thougth that's also the logical conclusion I came to..

Hey now i'm confused. One of the citations above (Jijina, whoever that is) says that tomestones have become useless due to their age and are only collector items now. Why is that in the 3.0 SMN quests Y'Mithra clearly says "I shall consult my tomestones" countless times?

balmung Sage Emeraude - Elezen in need of connections!
Valence replied to Admiah Kreiston's topic in Chronicled Connections
I can offer a character with a heavy gridanian background. Not sure for longer term plots, but it is there! -
I like the idea. Not totally sure what kind of hook you would be looking for but I suppose that potentially magitek/tech stuff could happen with my character someday, even if she isn't really looking to hire anyone.. Well any way, she can fix stuff and all (somewhat randomly). Also while i'm at it, a cowboy roe sounds fun too!
-
Mh ok, so Magitek is more of a vernacular garlean word for their own specific brand of tech rather than a true universal term for everything. Gotcha. Makes sense.
-
Ah interesting...! I wonder though, as it was a tad hidden behind my question I guess, if it enters the category of Magitek stuff? Or what are the boundaries of what constitutes Magitek as a definition? I tend to see it as every piece of technology that specifically make use and channels aether, but I'm not totally sure of myself here, since it would also include staffs and canes and bows and crude stuff like that...
-
Not a big deal over 140 answers... Will just have to put it back in my head where it's supposed to be and that's it... I also totally agree regarding your stance on alts. At best, it could be interesting to have a poll where it is asked if the voter has any alts and how many, but that's it... Otherwise it loses any meaning. For half-breeds though, I think it could actually be interesting to see how many of those there are around... Even if in a different question (is your character a halfbreed Y/N?).
-
Pretty much. At first I thought answer 2) meant that you are not the WoL but are still part of the story of the WoL and affect it, and answer 3) is not acknowledging your own character part in the MSQ. Which is why I picked up 3. Now I see I got it totally wrong...
-
What do we know about mammets? Are they magitek? Are they living creatures? A mix between both? The MSQ showing the mammet heart seems to hint at more than just machines... Or are they just like allagan nodes in a less advanced fashion? I find the question interesting because when thinking about it it's not that easy to find the exact boundary between machines and magicks in that universe. Some ancient civilizations like Mach and Nym and Amdapor elevated magical arts to unequaled highs, while others like Allag did the same but with technology based on magicks (Magitek, etc). The only thing that never change is that everyone and everything uses Aether as a base ingredient..

Judging from the clothing ingame, they must be scantily clad. More seriously though, it's an interesting question. They look kinda middle east / indian inspired but it's totally possible I got the totally wrong impression.
-
I understood the last question totally wrong and answered 3. Duh. And I forgot the link to edit my answer. Great. Also predicting that Au'ri are going to be as numerous as Mi'qote, or just behind.
-
The thing I have been recently very interested in since I'm starting to be pretty lore ready otherwise (I learn fast), is in all those ingame items basically. I'm trying to read all the descriptions, but there is so many that you can't just not forget everything about each of them most of the times... And i'm not sure what could be done regarding them... But I feel like most of the Eorzean everyday lore bits are hidden there. Like, for example, traditional foods for a lot of races.
-
What was in the West Shroud by the way?
-
Alternatively.. (lacks the Au'ri sadly...)

X|V:CS Compatible RP Combat System for FF:X|V
Valence replied to Ravean Blutsinger's topic in RP Discussion
I have had the occasion to try it the last week on a trial event I ran, and it works very well. Of course I 'dumbed' it down a bit so that folks don't get too terrorized by all those sheets and numbers (especially the non tabletop people and total neophytes)... And so, actually, even without the stacking system (stacks, etc), the AP regen, the thing is pretty solid! What I liked with that is that you can remove stuff or add stuff pretty easily and adapt it and it still works nice. Then of course since it was kind of like a tutorial for everyone it felt like the amount of HP for playable characters was colossal, but then again, I bet you can make other mobs more lethal... Especially if we also start to deal in AoEs and the likes... But yeah, I may feel the thing is not lethal enough, for example if you put 2 characters against each other. You might need more than 8-10 turns to finish it. It takes time. Well then again, I guess it's a matter of preferences and I might reduce it a little on the freelancer base the next time since our group mostly plays average characters/mercs after all. Would also love a better way to swap stances on the character sheets but I can't think of one sadly... I guess it's the limits of the googledocs sheets (though those still perform outstandingly well in the end). I may have noticed a few things that seemed a bit weird to me in terms of balance, maybe, but that's rather minor... For example, maybe it's actually what was desired behind, but what is the point for a character to use Grit as a DRK if he also has the defensive stance that outperforms it in every way? Maybe it's the idea though? I don't remember every little thing like that I spotted like that sadly though... Not that much in any case. Mh also, more on a personal feedback and tastes, I find that the general magic categories are way too encompassing in terms of magic, even if you have to take all the levels up to compensate... So I like to play it a bit differently here and I split them all into magical disciplines the same way they are already for example for enfeebling magic, protective/supportive magic, healing magic, etc. I basically just broke down the Magic lvl1, 2, 3 into elemental magic basically, getting rid of all the redundancies found in those containers to let them specific to their own categories (so basically magic becomes elemental magic and the rest disappears and gets back to their own, like lore, enfeebling, etc etc). I find it a bit better to make distinctions between thaumaturges and conjurers, even if in technical lore they should have access to the same kind of spell arsenal... It allows me to introduce the schools of thoughts that they are taught and that way the only thing they really share most of the time is elemental magic... Also of course, those characters that want to be conjurers and still deal in enfeebling magic rather than supportive, can! And vice versa for thaumaturges that want to support/heal. The basic set remains elemental magic and you can build around that. So yeah, personal taste mostly. I think both ways work fine to me. I also found a way to simulate a little the differences in terms of character power and experience. Some characters are very green while others are grizzled. So my take on that was to get the magic levels (1, 2, 3...) as an example for everything, and apply it to every commands: for example, I can have healing lvl1, lvl2 and lvl3. I just weed out all the biggest and nastiest stuff for lvl1 characters, like, a lvl 1 character will only have access to cure and not cura/curaga. A lvl 2 will have access to cura, but not curaga, etc. Again, personal take on it... And that's what I like with the system: you can modulate your own stuff. I will try to give more feedback the next time I use it since I have only had the time for now to do a few turns of combat... -
balmung Seeking EU-time zone heavy rpers to play with!
Valence replied to Ekidna's topic in Chronicled Connections
That was an interesting and cool RP! It should build up into many shenanigans I think. -
There is one minor house mentioned in the Hogwarts Scholastiate series in Ishgard, House Maintigny (quest: more than meets the eye).

balmung Seeking EU-time zone heavy rpers to play with!
Valence replied to Ekidna's topic in Chronicled Connections
Our characters actually kind of "met" when mine paid a visit to Tristanaud recently, even if they didn't talk. I think it's potentially a place where it could happen again (or around), though considering what happened last time ICly i'm not totally sure your character would be allowed there again? In any case, I fall into the heavy RP category and the EU timezone. It is very possible (and probable) that if our characters have to meet more seriously it might end up on the antagonistic/hatred category, but that's not a given with Suen. I'm always interested in more RP, especially with characters that mine would distaste or hate (or not). I can't promise you a heavy long lasting plot just like that because you know, you have to have a little substance and ideas behind, so maybe we would have to think something out for that? In any case I'm open to things! -
"I dreamt that I spilt a glass of water on a painting and the colours bled." All I've got. It's mostly some different choices in conjugation like using "I have dropped the ball" instead of "I dropped the ball" in the immediate present and then the spelling differences. Aside from slang, though, both dialects are intelligible. And nobody cares about the other dialects. :< Eorzeans don't really speak in British English though, but that's an argument for elsewhere. The only thing i'm aware are the spelling differences, and even then, not every single one of them I guess... The curse not being a native and all.
-
If only I knew the difference between both... Besides the few basic obvious things...
