  1. You're certainly welcome in mine! Kasi and I don't run into Lalafel anywhere near as much as we should. In any case though, welcome aboard the Balmung, FFXIV, and the RPC! Every FF game is its own game- there are some common elements shared between the games (such as chocobos) but generally each game is its own world and lore. So, at the very least, you don't need to play catch up with a whole lot of lore that's coming from other games. The main story questline is your ticket to lore, and you're welcome to ask questions around here too! FFXIV has one of the best storylines you'll find in MMO's today, so you're in for a treat. The Encyclopedia Eorzea is the one-stop-shop for game lore aside from the game itself, so if you can find a copy of that, you'll be drowning in lore you'd swear was coming from a Dungeons & Dragons campaign book! Hope to see you around!
  2. That sounds like it'd work wonderfully to me. Where do I sign up, eh? EDIT: Would probably help: I'm online generally after 5PM CST on weekdays, all day on weekends!
  3. Interesting! Kasi would probably fit the bill on a number of these bullet points. Kasi is a career mercenary and trader that frequents both the Shroud and Ul'dah, and has something of a reputation for always keeping her word. She's also a veteran lancer and an ex-soldier, but has put down the lance lately in order to train with the greatsword and its heavier weight. Last but not least, she's always up for a good brawl- it's a good way for her to test herself and see how her training is going. Details are in her biography in my signature, but if this sounds interesting to you, let me know!
  4. Hey there, and welcome to the RPC! Cool RPC biography there- Kota sounds like a pretty bang-up character! Hard to say if she'd have much in common with the folks in ShroudLife- really depends on how much she wanders outside of cities along the road. If she does, then I can probably recommend that. But, if nothing else, you're welcome to get into some trouble with Kasi!
  5. Hey there, and welcome aboard! I take it you're still learning much of the lore already and probably haven't settled entirely into a character yet? Or do you have some ideas of where you'd like to go off the bat?
  6. Rough and tumble is definitely not bad- keeping to the basics and letting RP give you some direction and ideas on the fly is a perfectly viable way to go about it! Probably call that the "run & gun" approach. That was pretty much how I did things breaking out for the first time 3 months back- you just kind of learn the lore as you go, but more importantly, it gets you out into the community right away. As for Discord... this is something that was REALLY new to me too when I started, because using Skype and Discord as RP channels is pretty new to the scene (*shakes cane*). Voice chat is completely optional and in fact very rarely have I seen it actually used- this applies to all of the Discord RP FFXIV channels I'm in. Think of the Discord channel as an out-of-game text / IM method for soliciting for contacts, RP, and planning. It's an extension of linkshell chat in-game. That being said, you don't have to join the Discord if you don't want to- we can get you into the linkshell in-game and leave it at that, too! As for ShroudLife itself... keep in mind, this IS just a linkshell- you're not applying to a free company here, so there's no major commitments and there's no huge interview process. If you think you'd have due cause to interact with characters here, then you're a perfect fit. It's a another avenue to network, at the end of the day. Make contacts, get RP! As for the dirty pair... you're certainly welcome to come meet Kasi! Just based on your Miqo'te's basic personality description, she'd be an interesting foil to her. I tank and DPS dungeons (mostly tank) with Kasi, and I'm happy to tank for other folks for what they need or drag them along with me! I'm usually online after 5PM CST. EDIT: As for your other questions... Yeah, it's 3 RL days before you can move the characters. That got me too when I moved Kasi onto Balmung. It's not game time. There's a few lore gurus around here on the RPC that you can pose questions to in the lore forum. I can probably answer some questions if you have them too, but being as how I'm still a little green myself, some of my answers will probably end up being some variation of, "I don't know, let me check the lore book." Still, happy to help where I can!
  7. I don't run into nearly enough Lalafell... Ahem. Kasi is usually around Gridania and Ul'dah running jobs and meeting with her day-to-day contacts. She'll roam quite a bit even into Ishgard. She's a 'family' girl with a little bit of a mercenary, little bit of a trader, and a big bit of meat enthusiast thrown in. Her biography is linked in the signature if you'd like to read a bit more, but either way, would be happy to run into you sometime!
  8. Sounds like a pretty good plan to me! As someone who's like 3 months in, I know soaking in the lore can be a lot like trying to drink from a firehose. There ought to be a fairly good selection of merc companies out there, but take a look around at Linkshells too. Since those are fairly non-committal and non-FC, it'll give you some good chances to branch out beyond just your FC (not having all your eggs in one basket, pretty much)! If nothing else, you're certainly welcome to run into Kasi sometime- she's also a mercenary as well as a wandering trader, albeit a freelance. There'd probably be some common ground there- Kasi sometimes needs some help with the bigger jobs or doesn't have the time to do all of hers.
  9. Hm. 9-11 PM CST isn't too bad either- definitely some activity to be found. I didn't suggest it on your welcome post since it didn't seem to fit at the time, but if you're looking for world RP hooks, then I'd suggest potentially poking ShroudLife. There's a lot of opportunity there for roaming world RP and wilderness themed stuff, if there's any appeal in that to you. You can find the whole information dump in my signature. That being said, it IS a linkshell- this isn't a FC, so it's not like you need to make any crazy commitments to it. Apart from that, Celestine might be a good option, as might be Glowfly Exchange. If you were Miqo'te, I'd point you toward either Morbolvine or Shroudwolf, and even though Shroudwolf does accept non-Miqo'te, it's a bit of a niche position that has some challenges behind it. Those are the guilds I can speak from experience from on being at least somewhat active. Hope this helps a bit!
  10. What timezone is that in? I probably can't offer a whole lot here as it stands, but who knows! In any case, good luck!
  11. Hey there, and welcome aboard to Balmung! Sounds like you've got a pretty good start on your character already- sounds fantastic! If your character favors nomadic traveling often, you might want to look into ShroudLife (link in the signature) as a means to connect with other similar characters. The linkshell focuses on roaming RP in the world and features a lot of wilderness survivalist characters and traders, so you may be able to discover a good number of connections there. Beyond that, you're certainly welcome to run into Kasi!
  12. Thank you! I was actually making a laugh at the pun about a forever home, an being a cat I will look into it. I am usually around running dungeons for the time being, where might I run into people in the world? Cat supremacy! Bwahahaha! There's a few places- the most major one is currently the Quicksand Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah where the bulk of random RP occurs. That being said, there are Linkshells that facilitiate world RP (such as ShroudLife) and guilds that use their hall as an RP hub as well (I've seen Glowfly Exchange do this sort of thing). A lot of the guild halls seem to be open too, so you can visit if you like. Finally, there's an RP event calendar of stuff you can get involved in too, over here: http://erahsae-ffxiv.tumblr.com/
  13. Welcome aboard to Balmung and the RPC! I think you've come to as good a place as any to try and put down some long term RP roots. You'll want to start looking for linkshells and a free company as soon as possible, and perhaps even make a Making Connections post as well here on the RPC. The more you reach out, the faster you'll go! Since you're a Miqo'te, I can potentially recommend ShroudLife (link in the signature) as one potential option for a networking linkshell, if that sounds like something your character could interact with. As far as Miqo'te-based guilds go, there's Morbolvine Clan and the Shroudwolf Clan (not that I'm biased cough). Morbolvine has a recruitment thread in the Linkshell section I believe, and Shroudwolf has one in the Free Company section. Although Shroudwolf is listed as closed recruitment... well, nothing is impossible. Ahem. Regardless, you're certainly welcome to run into Kasi if nothing else!
  14. Welcome back to the game! Keeper master race. /nod Any ideas yet on what you're going to be looking for, in the case of Talyah? Got anything in mind?
  15. Welcome aboard to the RPC and Balmung! Not much to add here that Ghost hasn't already covered. The best experience you'll get is just getting out there, joining a free company or a few linkshells, and testing the waters. You might want to try visiting the Quicksand Adventurer's Guild in Ul'dah first and just watching what other people do. That'll give you some more comfort on where you're headed!
  16. Hey there, and welcome back to the game! Best thing I can suggest offhand is getting set up with a few linkshells and a free company that you can ask people in if they want to run some leveling content (which is nothing to say for being able to ask to get some RP too in there), such as level roulette or POTD. You're certainly welcome to hit me up though if you're looking to do the leveling roulette or get some RP going- I usually spend most of my evenings do either one of those. Well, least until Kasi finally hits 60 DRK. Then I expect I will be spending that time only doing RP if I can help it.
  17. Hey there, welcome back, and congratulations on your impending transfer to Balmung! I'd say the sooner you transfer, the better. Once you're in you can start making some contacts and arranging for meetups with other characters, which'll form the lifeblood of getting your experience started. You can also start looking at linkshells and free companies right away, though your mileage will vary, of course. You can also toss up a Making Connections post here on the RPC, which may offer some other possibilities. Sounds like an interesting start for a character concept, though. Right out I can say there are a few Miqo'te-centric guilds and linkshells which may interest you. ShroudLife is probably the first and foremost recommendation I would give, on that note (link is in the signature). If nothing else, you're certainly welcome to run into Kasi on the road sometime. She does a fair bit of traveling, trading, and mercenary work so she can be found practically anywhere when she needs to be. In any case, welcome aboard!
  18. Well I saw you online once but you got into a duty. Been getting on kinda late and things have been weird with the holiday. I'll keep trying though. Derp. Might have some better luck today- I'll keep an eye out for you too!
  19. Thanks for that. tbh I don't really know where to begin. I had some ideas for my character originally but because i either keep changing his certain job or whatever I end up changing something about his background... Even something as simple as his race will offer some starting points. You don't necessarily need to make their class or job a central part of their concept either (at least not yet), especially since you can change classes at-will in the game already. If your character is Miqo'te, for example, I can offer some starting points there for getting plugged in. If he's a trader or wandering sellsword, I can also offer some points there too! As far as class examples go, Kasi started as a lancer but started learning the greatsword a few weeks back- that's just part of character development. It can be as restricted or open as you can imagine!
  20. Hey there, and welcome aboard to the RPC! A good starting point here would be to let everyone know a little about your character, and from there, you can start to make some connections with others and grow your own network! No better way than to shake that rust off, than jumping right into things. A linkshell or a good RP FC will also be a pretty huge benefit if you can find a few active ones to allow you to tap into some more niches too.
  21. Anyone in ShroudLife can invite, so you can bug me in game and I'll get you squared away! You can also bug Gehr'ir and tell him Kasi sent you and that you read the forum thread. He should hook you up too!
  22. Balmung is the premier RP server and sadly it's a little hard to get into for free. Best means to do it is to pay the $18 transfer fee. I don't know much about the other servers and RP but Balmung is a sure shot!
  23. Hey there, and welcome aboard to both the community and the game! If you have questions about lore, there's a lore forum for that, so if you're still in the process of creating a character backstory, that'd be a good place to begin. But, if you've got a good direction in mind already, that might be something for you to touch on here if you're looking at possible connections with other characters! Otherwise, there's the Making Connections forum for that sort of thing too. So, in short? Dive right in!
  24. The intent of the linkshell is (as I interpret it) meant for characters that either engage the wilderness at full throttle, or those that flirt with it occasionally or even fairly regularly. So, for example, Kasi is a wanderer, trader, and mercenary who goes into civilization regularly, but has somewhat of an affinity for the wilderness, and due cause to regularly interact with more hardcore wilderness characters. You don't have to be hardcore wilderness to be a part of ShroudLife- just cause enough to interact with them. Ultimately though, it is just a linkshell- it's not like you're joining a free company! In the end, it's a resource meant to give you access to a wider array of players & characters in that particular niche. You might run into folks there on occasion, and perhaps find one or two you'd like to run into frequently. If you do, then the linkshell has served its purpose!
