RiniKett Posted July 23, 2015 Share #26 Posted July 23, 2015 Conversely, I almost never look at search info. I always forget but there's only so many ways "Walk ups, welcome" can be worded anyway. It would be kind of nice if people put a brief tidbit about their character instead of "walk ups welcome." I'm probably not going to start random RP without finding a character hook of some sort first. I've always kept an eye out for the "walk ups welcome" since the days I rped on WoW. I've had people actually turn away walk up RP because they weren't interested. A bigger pet peeve of mine are the people who do have it listed but then turn down the walk ups. Frustrating. Leggerless Posted July 23, 2015 Share #27 Posted July 23, 2015 Visual cue without shifting through multiple menus to verify someone's IC? Yes, please. More efficient than examining search info. Edit: Also shares the same color as the "online" symbol; an added bonus. 1 Link to comment

It would be kind of nice if people put a brief tidbit about their character instead of "walk ups welcome." I'm probably not going to start random RP without finding a character hook of some sort first. I check/examine/inspect people compulsively. People who watch me stream comment on it. If I'm standing around, I'm inspecting people. Zooming in on their characters, checking their gear, reading their search box. I mean it's just a habit, and though it is pretty boring to read RP'er fifty million times every so often you get a new gem, a nicely worded bit about the character or just something funny altogether. The other day I examined some Ishgardian Rp'er whose comment read "Pious in the streets, heretical in the sheets." I thought it was hilarious. I stopped mentioning walk ups welcomed long ago and now I have a bit about the character or even a quote from the character to give you a tease of what you're getting into. It's just a better hook as you said. Anyway, don't get me wrong guys. I fully support the idea and if I start seeing it gain traction I'll help it as much as I can, but in my experience... I'm just not sure it will. Anyway, two thumbs up, good luck getting off the ground. 3 Link to comment
Tortles Posted July 23, 2015 Share #29 Posted July 23, 2015 This sounds like a good idea if the symbol isn't being used, though I'm always bothered when a game mechanic is appropriated to mean something else, and not everyone is in on it. I would suggest adding a note in your search info that says "Materia meld Icon means I'm in character", or something along those lines, so that people can confirm. Link to comment
Olofantur Posted July 23, 2015 Share #30 Posted July 23, 2015 An interesting idea! I'll hop aboard if only for the sake of potentially using this later on to bother SE into making an IC icon or something of the sort. (and wanting to get back into public RP more.) While i'm unable to participate on the forums due to an ancient banning, i'd be more than happy to spread the information around if an official thread was created on the forums. I think this would provide quite the boon to people who are not on Balmung, but are still interested in the idea of roleplaying. (Of course the stigma attached to it will still exist but c'est la vie.) Link to comment

To be honest least for me the only symbols I see in use are busy and afk, the others ones aren't even used since pf takes care of party and meld requests. Link to comment

Valtiere Posted July 23, 2015 Share #34 Posted July 23, 2015 I would suggest adding a note in your search info that says "Materia meld Icon means I'm in character", or something along those lines, so that people can confirm. I would do this but the space we have in the search info is so abysmally small there's no room left after putting in the [RP] tag and a small character note as hook to those who might use it. I wish we could have a tiny bit more space in there. Link to comment
Chris Ganale Posted July 23, 2015 Share #35 Posted July 23, 2015 I've always had a very brief blurb about my characters in their search info, followed by the RP thing. So either I've been putting dumb blurbs or my characters are interesting to absolutely no one. That said, if this is going to be a thing, I'll pass it along to my group. I've mentioned it to one set already. Link to comment

I'm probably not going to start random RP without finding a character hook of some sort first. Been an advocate of this for a long time. I can't exactly read a character's mind, you know? Technically your character isn't a mind reader either. The RP Walkups Welcome is just saying that ... well.. walkups are welcome. As in real life, you don't simply know who a stranger is the moment you walk up to them. You have to observe them to figure out what is going on. The same holds true in RP. Watch what a character is doing, and approach after you have your hook. Find out the rest (read:the stuff you would have to be a mind reader to learn) through actual RP. Link to comment
Gone. Posted July 24, 2015 Share #39 Posted July 24, 2015 Well, no, but in a room with 2-3 dozen random IC roleplayers, I need more than 'walk-ups welcome' to pique my interest. I don't have the time or desire to waste time on characters who will have zero chemistry with mine; sure I'm not the only one, either. 1 Link to comment
Z'ythe Solwind Posted July 24, 2015 Author Share #40 Posted July 24, 2015 We need to ask, as a group consistently about our own symbol. On the live letter question forums, on the suggestion forums, on the Q&A's. This request needs traction. Link to comment
Spethah Posted July 24, 2015 Share #41 Posted July 24, 2015 I'm a forgetful person, I almost always forget to check search info because really I've got no need to do it outside of "oh man is this person an RPer?". I don't have a description for my character because I do say "Please /t" and in that time you can just ask what kind of character Septh is while you ask for possible RP. Not hard. Being someone that struggles to get anyone to notice me in RP, regardless of what I do, having a little flag that says "Yo I'm a lonely fucker that's IC send help" would be nice though not in those words, that was just my situation talking. Is it just me but I find it quite troublesome to conjure up with a char description in search info, especially if you sort of use your ingame model as what to represent your character. I really did not get further then "Ishgardian Elezen" x_X Link to comment
abnormalnomad Posted July 24, 2015 Share #45 Posted July 24, 2015 It really would take a large scale effort to make this a 'thing'. For science, I put the tag on earlier this evening and did some 'fishing' RP in the Quicksand, roleplaying individually with the goal to attract and start roleplay, rather that be the one to initiate it, and suffice to say, it did basically nothing, and I had no more (and no less?) RP than I would have received otherwise. That's why I tend to approach whenever I'm in a mood to actually RP, rather than just 'wait' for it to fall in my lap. Aside from a few flavor emotes to let people know I'm IC, that is. But, that being said, I definitely agree with the people above, though. If we really want a 'tag' to identify ourselves as roleplayers, we should ask the development team/the producer. I've been told they actually listen to their playerbase/community, which seems (sadly) surprising to me. Would be best to make this a proper 'thing', rather than some jury-rigged half measure. 1 Link to comment

Which is vague, and could mean either "Support-related feedback" OR "Suggestions," or "Support-related feedback or Support-related suggestions," which sounds more likely. I don't think these suggestions end up being read by anyone other than the support team, since all the other buttons go to either the Game Masters or the bug squishers. Link to comment

In the most elementary sense of the term, anything that makes the gaming experience easier and more enjoyable can be defined as "support", and more specific Search functions such as an IC/RP icon do fall in that category, whereas, say, asking "omg add a tankini in-game please!" would be not. So far, most people seem against it. Honestly, I'm rather against it's use as well. While the concept is neat, I can see it being confused very easily for people who aren't RPers. And even then, this only will really tell me who is in the RPC as the bigger community isn't here but rather in-game. Link to comment
