Edda Posted August 25, 2015 Share #201 Posted August 25, 2015 7) As it might be apparent in (most of) my posts here on the RPC, I very much enjoy lighthearted humor and kidding around. Laughter is the best medicine, and though my sense of humor does not always translate well over text, I enjoy making people smile. However, that does not mean I don't take my RP very seriously. In fact, I take it very seriously, and I expect the same courtesy extended to me from all those I play with. I do the same for everyone, as I know both myself and many others put a tremendous amount of time and energy into their roleplay. With that being said, I will confess my number one song listened to during intense and dramatic scenes is this: tjNE-P1g4ZE Why? It is a mystery. 1 Link to comment

Khunbish Avagnar Posted August 25, 2015 Share #203 Posted August 25, 2015 Getting awkward about RP events like...sitting off to the side and not knowing a thing about how to join in or interact resulting in me just sitting there interacting and RPing with my Coeurl Kitten minion. Then leaving 'cause I start getting upset Link to comment
Greybarren Posted August 25, 2015 Share #204 Posted August 25, 2015 I don't play the game with nameplates. So yes, I could very well breeze by your character without even a nod. Nameplates are just too much visual clutter for me and honestly, removing them makes the game feel more immersive. Melodrama. Sometimes, I'm just a sucker for it because HEY, it's all pretend anywho and it can be fun in the right amounts at the right time. While I am not a grammar nazi nor perfect at it in any sense, I cannot stand to be involved in RP where the other person seems incapable of capitalizing the personal pronoun "I". Everything else could be perfect about RPing with this person: deep character, awesome plot, etc. But that thing ... that one lack of effort will drive me away from RPing with the player. I "need" to watch RP in the open world sometimes before just walking in. Especially on new characters. It's like getting my bearings in a new car, in a way. Link to comment
Desitjant Posted August 26, 2015 Share #205 Posted August 26, 2015 ...Not really a confession since pretty much everyone knows that at this point, but... I roll my eyes and grimace every time I stumble on someone who feels the need to share their romantic/sexual RP-related actions in /em or /s... It's like having a couple kissing next to you and you can't look away (because the chatlog is there). I don't judge the people doing it, but the action, oh I do judge the action much. Eyeroll all the way. Sometimes it's fun! One of my favorite SWTOR memories is of leaving the neutral club/tavern and seeing a Sith guy and Jedi girl RPing a furious drunken makeout session in an alley. At the time, each faction had separate /say channel, so everything was happening in /em. After a few minutes, their respective groups of friends came running and started milling around the entrance, both alternating between expressing their dismay at this most unholy union, angrily blaming the other party for letting their friend get too wasted, and begging the duo, "PLEASE, _____, let's just GO HOME!!" It all felt much more realistic and human(oid) than the typical "stoic Jedi disdain" and "seething Sith hatred", you know? Link to comment
Desitjant Posted August 26, 2015 Share #206 Posted August 26, 2015 When I started roleplaying, I was surprised at the number of people I met that expressed unease at the prospect of roleplaying a character opposite to their RL gender. I can understand where the sentiment comes from, but the idea of "gender-bending" was foreign to me. If I have a concept, I choose the gender, race, class, etc. that seems like the best fit. No different than a character in book or a play! Incidentally, the biggest influence on my favorite RP character to date was Olivia Dunham from "Fringe" - whom I would place among the greatest female protagonists in SciFi, ever. It's so easy to forget that she's a character played by an actress, and not an actual person - pure magic. Link to comment
Rufus Wightman Posted September 21, 2015 Share #207 Posted September 21, 2015 I'm just gonna go off the assumption that this topic covers more than just FFXIV RP. In which case... 1. Looking back, as most RPers would find, my first forays into RP were fucking atrocious. The kind of thing I'd slap myself silly for trying these days. But it's nice to see how I've improved over the 5 or so years I've been RPing. 2. I'm honestly not that great when it comes to progressing my character. I can never really seem to find the right hook or moment or willing participants to form any kind of development plot. It's kinda sad, in all honesty. 3. I tend to get quite bored rather easily when I'm trying to RP, but there isn't much to be had in the way of interactions. Say I'm at the Quicksand, and it's bustling. I try to approach someone, and the attempt is cast off for any number of reasons, I'm rather quickly to get fed up and just leave thinking, "I can always come back tomorrow, I guess..." 4. I put FAR too much effort into food-preparation emotes. To the point where I actually make myself hungry just reading it back. 5. I sometimes worry that my range of vocabulary is not as wide as it could be. I often get the feeling that I'm repeating myself when it comes to emotes. I suppose I just find a few select words that work well for me and stick to them, but the amateur writer in me is silently criticizing away for it. Top fun! 1 Link to comment
Jean L Posted September 23, 2015 Share #208 Posted September 23, 2015 1. I'm really, really, really shy so I actually haven't RPed as much as I'd like to in FFXIV aside from with two friends who are taking a break from the game Q_Q 2. I haven't RPed on any other MMO before FFXIV 3. I prefer being improve heavy vs tons and tons of plotting. Plotting is fun but I don't like getting every single detail down during it. Plotting every interaction, every reaction, that's not really fun at all. 4. I play characters that are kind of snarky or snippy and I'm deathly afraid that someone will blend IC and OOC. (but I still play those characters because they're the most fun) Link to comment
Zetchryn Posted September 23, 2015 Share #209 Posted September 23, 2015 I often get worried that some of my favorite RPers just don't want to deal with my shit. Steel Wolf Posted September 23, 2015 Share #210 Posted September 23, 2015 I confess that I'm exhausted of RP'ing in this game and I dunno if I wanna do it no more. Telluride Posted September 23, 2015 Share #211 Posted September 23, 2015 I put off almost all my RP, save for a few events, when Heavensward came out, to level, like most of us did. Well, that's done. Got the main to 60 in two Combat Jobs and the one Gathering job. Then, wanted to get all the red scrip miner gear. Put off RP to do that, largely, save again for a few events. Now, that's done. Got the whole red scrip MNR set, and I'm kinda done with that. Did a couple of more RP events, but not a lot of character stuff. Then got the burr in my saddle to get my Roe alt into Heavensward, but I don't want to tank through it. So... got the character from lvl26 to lvl51 MNK, and trudged, painfully, through the MSQ, and tonight, finally tonight, the character is in Ishgard. Now... well, I think I need to RP again. Now, to figure what I can do with the bard. Maybe I'll go back to the multi-character story I've let sit stagnant for months. Maybe there's room for him and the newly-arrived alt in some crazy plot somewhere. Now, all I gotta do is switch out of grind mode and... just see what there is to get into. More of a confession is that I'm so picky about guilds, having been terribly burned by a good number of them in the last 7 years, that I'm probably denying myself a really good experience with one. Several really good people have talked to me about it, but now, I kinda have to stick with my guns after pushing some of the offers aside, because if I don't, it's kind of an insult to, well, other options I pushed aside. I simply am not playing a character who's especially well suited to the themes of most FCs I've seen. Link to comment
Heidrek Posted September 23, 2015 Share #212 Posted September 23, 2015 There's less wiggle room with job lore than the MMO's I've played previously and I'm worried I might accidentally make a mistake and leave a bad impression because of it. Link to comment
Teadrinker Posted September 23, 2015 Share #213 Posted September 23, 2015 1.) I can't have a homosexual character since I am so strongly heterosexual in real life. It just doesn't compute. Any attempts made have resulted in really hideous RP because I just have ZERO affinity for the same sex and can't fake it. 2.) I'm a lore stickler and have pretty massive issues with people breaking it because they often just don't have good reasons to. There is no storytelling device being used. There's no plot motive. Just "lookit me I'm super cool and awesome" which is obnoxious as hell. 3.) I tend to avoid people whose first line of their wikis talk about how "pretty/studly" they are, how big their boobs are, how they rule a country that doesn't exist or just overall seems like a shrine to themselves. I treat that like a red flag. 4.) RP Tumblrs are usually more hilarious than they are useful. There are some gems though. Link to comment

I feel sort of the same about making a heterosexual character, but I get around it by alting a female for variety. The way men and women experience romance is very different, so even though both characters are interested in men, the relationship dynamic functions differently and is a different experience to RP. Having grown up around a lot of women, I suppose it becomes easier to do. 2.) There was a guy last night talking about Communism as if people in Eorzea are going to know that word. They may have a utopian concept, but it isn't called Communism. I appreciated that several people challenged him on it. Lore is absolutely the most important thing in a world someone else created. 3.)I am attracted to things from a commercial perspective and when it comes to my RP, I tailor my characters physically with features that are commercially attractive. If you know the fashion industry you know the type. BUT! It's safe to assume that 99% of our characters are also hot. Face claims are always actors and models. In my mind there is no point in saying how attractive or powerful my characters is because A) I know he is and B) Everyone else can assume he is just based on the customization features I chose. My profiles will never describe my characters are "more attractive than" or compare their beauty to something because it looks dumb and beauty is subjective. If he has defining features like a square jaw, or a chiseled body (I wouldn't use that term), sure I'll note it, but I never want to try to state that my character is in an elite class of beauty. I don't know what Eorzea's beauty standard is, or how sexy the average citizen is. Link to comment

Most of my characters aren't outright "ugly" but they are certainly not models or maybe even "attractive" in the conventional sense. Two of my oldest, main-est characters, Reilan and Llaine, are both lifetime warriors who bear horrific scars all over their bodies from the trials of war. Reilan may be considered "rugged" for an Elezen and Llaine at the very least not horrid looking but they are both meant to be rough and tumble and certainly far less attractive than the character creator will let me make them look. Aaron Posted September 23, 2015 Share #216 Posted September 23, 2015 1. I also cant play homosexual or bisexual characters because im straight and can't for the life of me fake it. Nothing wrong with a persons sexuality however, just not my taste. 2. I generally do not take rp or my character seriously (if people havent noticed that already). And i havent really been rping lately because of that. I should probably get more serious about it. But most attempts at that always devolve back into me being more casually ok with whatever. 3. Not really too big on romance rp because i like to leave the game sporadically and whenever i feel like it ranging from a day to a month at max. And i dont want to get into those kinds of problems. But hey who knows it still might happen. 4. Also this is a big one. I saw it happen to one of my former GW2 guildies with the very scenario Teadrinker described. Two girls were RP partners. Started having an OOC relationship together. News comes to guild leader that one of them is actually man, and forces him to tell the girl in a group chat of the three of them. She was devastated. The rest of us didn't find out until later, and we know it wasn't a maliciously intended lie, but once you do lie about who you are on the internet, eventually it can catch up to you. Another one that goes with it when your guild becomes close enough with one another that they are comfortable revealing who they are or what they look like, and someone uses fake pictures claiming it's them. It pisses me off because you have this group of people who dedicate their free time to one another from all over the world, and when these people who have come to trust each other are able to be candid about their lives and you create a lie, it's horrible. I actually found one while looking through Free Company forums last week before I applied to the one I did. Recognized the face from social network feeds (this person is internet-famous for looking like a popular movie character), and it took a lot for me not to message the guild leader. It's not my place to get involved. I just can't stand the level of dishonesty some people think they can get away with on the internet. #endrant Link to comment

But yeah when people assume I'm trying to score cause I compliment either their toon or their personality shown in game this is my reaction. But ftr, most guys in general may play girls. . . but Role Play as a hobby is generally more woman populated than men. So most female rpers are legit actual girls.
