3.2 Story and Discovery Thread: HERE BE [SPOILERS]

Recommended Posts

Now, interesting sidenote and tangent on golem magicks... Amberscale Rock and several of the amber statues which at one point were the hallmark of Gelmorran architecture were known to remove powerful magical enchantments, including and most pertinently, golem soulstones. Which begs the interesting question, why did the Gelmorrans surround their city entrances and dot the forest with these amber statues? Was it to protect against golems which still lay about from the previous era? Perhaps more importantly, why do the elementals want the statues removed so badly? The amber doesn't seem to affect the elementals, because there are elementals living in Amberscale Rock. Who knows. Answers only lead to more questions.

Are you referring to the leve in Quarrymill where the Hearer tells you to break down all the stone structures that are Gelmorran?

Succor is corruptible (reverse status in Lost City HM).

The abuse of Succor by the Amdapori included giving life to the dead and to maybe inanimate objects.

That Succor could still be used by the Amdapori suggests that it's a power the Elementals use but do not directly control.

Well we kind of already knew that Succor was corruptible. It was strongly suggested in some of the stories (combined with what we saw of Amdapor City the first time) that the Amdapori were mixing Succor with things they shouldn't have and using it for evil ends.

I don't think the Elementals were able to control it once they had given the secrets of it to the Amdapori, but they had a really definitive way of taking care of that issue when the Amdapori got too big for their britches.

Well sure, but we hadn't ever seen anything concrete, it's nice to see it.

Yes, this one:

Of overgrown traces of Gelmorra' date=' few remain to disturb the order of the forest, yet occasional ruins are still found that must needs be removed. What is under the forest may stay, but our laws decree that no stone of Gelmorra mar the home of the elementals.[/quote']

I am fully aware the levequest is issued by Charline, from all accounts an incredibly biased and bigoted source who seems to have it out for all Duskwight. She's not generally well liked around camp and many people consider her interpretations of the elementals to be suspect at best. That said, the levequest says "our laws" meaning that this practice has precedent beyond one potentially corrupt hearer. Is it elemental will or Gridanian bias? I don't think any can say, but past experience reminds me that those who try to destroy or take from the Wood without elemental permission usually do not survive.

Guess I'll offer my own thoughts and try not to be repetitive...

1) I... actually liked this installment of the MSQ. I was prepared to look for problems, but I think SE's writing team is actually learning something. So, good patch. Don't faint.

2) "The Punch" was especially satisfying, not because of how the story made me feel about Emanellain (or "Mayonnaise" as a few people are calling him), but because Thancred basically made a man out of the boy, something even Edmont could not do, and provided one of the best character development opportunities seen since 2.0.

3) Minfilia, perfectly handled - she gets her screen time to appease her fans, but for her non-fans, she's just handled. Curtain, applause.

4) Y'shtola rapidly approaching total bad@$$ status, possibly being primed for greater leadership.

5) SE still yoinking song references, but... it is oddly satisfying. Bonus points for "up the down staircase" literary reference.

Scattered thoughts cuz I'm at work and can't go looking for sources:

I liked the Goobue being brought up again but to anyone who didn't see the 1.0 scene, it just sounds silly. Goobs are like hippos: People might find them silly and cute but they're still huge, strong wild animals with big jaws. A black and white still image of a Goobue smashing a dude would have helped keep the tone serious.

I'm a bit disappointed that we got forced to fight for Ishgard instead of getting to pick our GC but getting to fight Raubahn was fun. Also a bit disappointed the fight would be the same even for players not in IF, but maybe there will be a chance to duel Admiral/Senna later.

This patch was too full of deathblows failing to kill anyone. Minfilia (haha my phone autocorrected to Mongolia) may be "gone to us" but I'm sure she is neither dead nor gone. The maid surviving at least served a bit of a narrative purpose for the next scene (and I hope we'll see her again once the fighting gets underway) but white dragon friend surviving as well just seemed too convenient.

UpsidedownTower was fun but kinda pointless. Amdapor City HM on the other hand was cool. I think people were talking about the animated WHM/BLM mobs but don't forget a third mob comes with them: The "Monk" (probably in the European monastic sense). My personal guess is that they're void guys and responsible for keeping the mages' souls functional. Also, possible source of soul gems for aspiring BLM/WHM RPers?

Haven't done Alex or Hildy yet, but it's Friday night!

...Meaning there should be no difficulty in getting it all done at once, yay. Also, while I'm sure it'll still be silly, I'd actually like it if the Ishgardian characters are still fairly serious. People seem willing to dismiss details from Hildy as canon to FFXIV due to it being a silly sidestory.

You will especially like this installment, then, Jana.

The reason that Nidstinien's skewer was not a killing blow seems simple to me.

Nidhogg intended to kill, but Estinien is resisting from within and steers the lance just an inch away from lethal in an act of defiance.

Also in 3.4, once we kill Nidhogg, Hraesvalgr will reveal the poorly foreshadowed twist.

"There must always be a Nidhogg, Warrior of Light."

Then Aymeric becomes the new Nidhogg and we go on to the new expansion.

"Uh, no no, Hraesie. I'm pretty sure that Nidhogg still existing is pretty much because you're an overgrown emo lizard who enabled him. So, now that you have both your eyes back, go cry more... and what? What's that? Oh, that WAS your favorite daughter he skewered, wasn't it? Did you ever tell her the truth before she suffered, too... Oh, NOW you're mad, when it's one of YOUR kids getting punctured by Nidhogg. You aren't worthy of Shiva."

My theory...Nidhogg is a bigger asshole than he lets on. He's always hated mortals. His war goes way back before the dragonsong war. When Hrasvelger and the others made peace with the mortals it pissed him off to the point his siblings were traitors in his eyes. He manipulated events that led to the murder of his sister, used it to justify his war. Some patch down the road he'll end up throwing it in Hrasvelgr's face of how pathetic he was and inform him of the real trurh. Mostly cause I would rather him be a bigger player than it just being the generic ascians behind every bad thing that happens.

Then change the Nidhogg tt card to a card with all ones except a middle finger on one side.

So, I am quite hype after running the new lost city HM a few times. So many possibilities to flesh out a character utilizing succor without going through fifteen loops and making them aligned to good.

Maybe I should make a thread on that..

Just bear in mind that the abilities you see in Lost City HM are lost. So to utilize them, you'd probably have to re-discover them. The most likely way to do that would be for your character to survive Lost City...which is a pretty tall order.

Well of course! That is part of the fun. Then again, would it not be considered atleast somewhat raided, for the lack of a better term, by a few hordes of adventurers? Considering that it has been accessible now and all of that. I could imagine that getting in and out would be harder.

I believe it's been considered raided by one group of adventurers (though that information may or may not be widely known). It's also currently crawling with Padjal, Elementals, and Wailers, per the end of the dungeon quest. So that may also provide you with some issues, as I can assure you that if you're corrupting White Magic, all three are going to be extremely unhappy with you and will give you A Very Bad Time.

In all honesty, I have yet to understand people who want to align White Magic with evil when it's so clearly not designed to do anything more than heal. Even weaponizing it appears to be extremely harmful in retrospect, and may very well be what accelerated the War of the Magi's damage of the earth itself. There's plenty of other magical schools that are either on the edge of evil, or just outright evil. I guess I just don't understand why someone would want to use the one intrinsically good and beneficial school of magic that way when there are much easier, and more sensible schools to access.
