Drugs in Eorzea

Somewhat on the topic, are there any references to tobacco or a tobacco-like plant in Eorzea? I've been known to have Hwab smoke a pipe from time to time. I guess it could be moko grass he's been smoking all along...

Is Moko more tobacco based or cannabis? If it's more tobacco then is there even a cannabis equivalent? I'm looking for some item that is used to relieve stress.

It's used to make hempen cloth, so I assumed it was cannabis. So, like, puff away says I. :)

For example' date=' if kukuru beans are the equivalent of cocoa beans (as the icon appearance and actual usage in the game suggests)... technically the only reason Eorzea doesn't have cocaine is the lack of technology to extract, condense (since cocoa leaf tea/chewing cocoa leaves isn't enough to get you high) and stabilize it.[/quote']

Cocoa and coca are not the same plant but they do grow in similar climates so its existence in Eorzea doesn't seem like a stretch.

Oops. Fail on my part -- I'm running on a lean mixture right now and didn't catch that lack of a second 'o' when I was looking at where exactly cocaine comes from and how it's processed. Thanks for the catch, heh.

This thread is very enlightening. I was wondering not just about the drugs and their effects but also their perceived legality (or explicit) in Eorzea.

Somnus I am pretty sure is an illegal substance but what about others?

Addiction without threat of the gaols?

The Milkweed stuff is completely illegal to use in Gridania.  I don't know about elsewhere.

I would think somnus processed for medical use (morphine) would be legal but the use and possession of raw somnus and its processed forms by the general public is illegal.

Sort of related I hope..

I have used the area at the back of Lost Hope in Central Thanalan as an "illegal" plant growing setup. Go look you will see what I mean.

I have one RP angle that is "off-book" Pirates smuggling things into Ul'dah to avoid any duty :)

Not so much in the category of illegal or questionable substances, but somewhat related: two things I've made mention of in RP are willow bark and Shroud lace.

Willow bark is just that.  It has had RL uses as a substance for reducing pain and inflamation and is, in fact, a precursor to aspirin.  The bark contains salicin.  Not that the technicalities would be well known in Eorzea except to, maybe, alchemists.

That said, alchemists might be able to distill the salicin from the bark and turn it into drops or another form.  Otherwise, the bark can be chewed, but it's slower to act in this form.

As for Shroud lace, IRL known as Queen Anne's lace, it has been used as a form of birth control by chewing the seeds of the plant, or grinding the seeds and mixing them into a tincture or tea.  I wanted to come up with a name for it which fit the game's setting, and Shroud lace came to mind.  Chewing the seeds tends to be less pleasant because they're bitter and gritty, mixing it with a liquid makes it more bearable.

I was just doing the level 30 pugilist quest when:

The main villain smokes something in a pipe called Pluto. Apparently one draft of it and your body turns as hard as iron - not even blades can pierce it.

Wow, they already invented Viagra.

Or as it's known in Ireland, Royal Whore Weed.

No but seriously, I knew the part about willow bark (thank you Once Upon a Forest), especially in that it can be used to drive off rheumatism.

This is entirely OOC when I say this of course, but Tarot smokes A drug in pipe while in his shop. Whether it's illegal or not, I leave that to more intrepid sorts, but I would always say make up your own--there's plenty of plants in Final Fantasy lore and names to use for drugs: Mako, Boko, Whisperweed, Cait-Sith Tails, Gau-Gau, Mysidian Lace, the list goes on with how creative one could be and what their effects are.

Just a couple suggestions to people looking for Eorzean drug parallel-y stuff:

- For an Eorzean equivalent of ecstasy, one may look at the sassafras tree and how it is harvested for various purposes (culinary, medicinal... recreational). Sassafras oil/safrole is what's used in making the drug IRL - so you don't necessarily have to look to crazy witchcraft or voodoo for the creation of the substance. Alchemists/botanists would certainly be useful for its extraction/manufacturing though. :3 I'm sure there's some tree in the Black Shroud you could point to and say "Hey, that's the guy" and take the RP from there. Don't piss off the Elementals, though, when you go chopping down their nice trees! I hear they're pretty straight-edge.

- I also suggest kratum, 'cause it's a chewable leaf thing, and that seems fun and do-able in a fantasy realm. It's also not super hard-core, it's actually kind of like coffee's sister. Perfect for the Eorzean working man.

The only other thing I have to add (if I remember correctly) is that milkroot stinks.
