That_NPC Posted November 23, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 23, 2014 Just to get some opinions out here, How do you guys feel about people using their starting race attire as their RP gear. I mean, its supposed to be relatively normal gear for adventurer's of that race, but I never see it happen. Link to comment
Zhavi Posted November 23, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 23, 2014 No different then using any other gear, to me. Certainly less controversial then the Big Bad Special Weapons that have rare properties or whatever that only a Chosen One would have. As long as we're game to rp, whatever goes. The clothing pretty much doesn't matter to me compared to the character itself. Link to comment
Merri Posted November 23, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 23, 2014 To be frank, there's really only a few sets of equipment that are technically (There's always ways to play things off) off limits as far as canon goes, and they're things like the Drachen Armor, the actual set of Warrior gear, as those are technically specific suits of armor that only has one existing set. There are, however, other sets like them, so it's easy enough to play it off as wearing a different set of a similar suit of armor. The mythology versions are also all replicas, so those are 100% canon. Some people get up in armors over equipment they feel people shouldn't have, others don't. Really just depends on the person and their opinion on the matter. Some, like specific relic weapons and relic armor, are completely justified canonically as being something only one person can technically obtain. RSE, however, is just... ...gear. There's nothing special to it, and it's by no means something that would ever be considered off limits to most people I would imagine. Link to comment
FreelanceWizard Posted November 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 23, 2014 I've RPed in the starting gear from time to time, though it's a bit... skimpy for L'yhta's tastes. I have used the elezen gear a fair amount on alts, though, and the hempen items are quite nice for building outfits. Honestly, I don't think there's any issue with using the starting gear in RP; they're just clothes, after all. Link to comment
Aya Posted November 23, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 23, 2014 I love using mine as my barmaid's uniform! I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to use it Link to comment
Delilah Scythewood Posted November 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 23, 2014 I use Lili's starter Hyur blouse all the time Link to comment
Maril Posted November 23, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 23, 2014 As a highlander, I frequently use the starting top. It mixes well with the level 50 LTW legs, cause you can dye the legs to match the leathery bit on the top. And as for other low-level things I use all the time, the sandals. I think they go as low as level 7-10 ish or so. Love them ^^ Link to comment
Nebbs Posted November 23, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 23, 2014 My mantra "Mix and match to effect" I use the tights more than the others but the Miqo'te boots also do well. Also i don't see it as any negative to RP with someone in such clothing. Link to comment
Ciel Posted November 23, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 23, 2014 Starting gear is just like going around in your race's version of jeans and a t-shirt. Nothing wrong with it, yes it's technically a common outfit, but I'd honestly have more of a problem with someone RPing combat while in pajamas if the combat wasn't a spur of the moment attack while they slept. It really boils down to a matter of preference. Some simply don't wear it because it might give the impression that their character is new and weak. Others will mix pieces of starting gear with other things; I was going to use some of it as part of a costume for All Saint's Wake. Link to comment
Kellach Woods Posted November 23, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 23, 2014 I'd do it if I could wear the female hyur clothes. They look better. Link to comment
Steel Wolf Posted November 23, 2014 Share #11 Posted November 23, 2014 I'd do it if I could wear the female hyur clothes. They look better. Agreed....though the only really stupid thing about the Roegadyn starter outfit is the gloves. Those arm...things....they look like the backing of a leather smoking chair cut into sleeves because the weaver got a contact high. Link to comment
Dogberry Posted November 23, 2014 Share #12 Posted November 23, 2014 I'd do it if I could wear the female hyur clothes. They look better. Agreed....though the only really stupid thing about the Roegadyn starter outfit is the gloves. Those arm...things....they look like the backing of a leather smoking chair cut into sleeves because the weaver got a contact high. Uhh sorry about that. Also, it wasn't a contact high. I actually really like the starting equipment for most races. If it fits your character, wear it! Link to comment
Coatleque Posted November 23, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 23, 2014 I use the Hyur boots all the time. Usually it's under a dress though, so nobody really notices. I like the heels they have. Don't be afraid to mix-and-match to create whatever look that fits your character. Link to comment
Kellach Woods Posted November 23, 2014 Share #14 Posted November 23, 2014 That's the thing, they gendered the outfits so what we like on either side we can't take, which kind of sort of sucks. Link to comment
Sophia_Grave Posted November 23, 2014 Share #15 Posted November 23, 2014 I really wish they and hempen gear weren't race locked; most of them look great. Link to comment
Aris Posted November 23, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 23, 2014 I think they're ideal for RP - to me they look like regular, normal, NPC clothes, but a bit nicer than the hempen shirt style for example. It would be nice to have some more items similar I agree, it would be nice if they weren't race/gender locked. I would use them if Aris was one of the other races but the Miqo'te ones don't really suit her character, except maybe the boots. I use the lalafell ones though, they're adorable. Link to comment
Gegenji Posted November 23, 2014 Share #17 Posted November 23, 2014 Chachan regularly runs around in basically his starting outfit, with his top replaced with the equally low-level race undershirt to better fit the hot temperatures of Ul'dah. I really like the pants because they come with little pouches that I like to think he keeps his gil and jerky treats for Gran in. Link to comment
Dasair Posted November 23, 2014 Share #18 Posted November 23, 2014 I actually use the elezen pants as part of my RP gear pretty regularly, but it fits the character and looks good with the rest of the stuff I use for him. Considering he's a caster, it's not too farfetched that he could also use it for battle as well, since most pants mages seem to get are.. basically very simple pants with little armor value to speak of. (At least from what I've seen so far.) In general, I think using parts of the starting gear, or even all of it, for RP makes perfect sense, and considering aesthetics, it's one of the things that does have a lot more design elements in it should it fit the character well. My only cringey thing about the starting gear is the lack of stats on it; but that's entirely from a fear in previous games (though a little, this one too) where your gear is the source of all a character's 'strength', and if I should be caught by a high level monster out RPing somewhere, I'd be murdered. Currently, this fear is pretty unfounded; in fact, I've beat on things forgetting I was in RP gear for a while, so unless I go into a higher dungeon unawares, this is just something I need to get over. Doesn't stop me from using the gear for RP though. (Plus there are always glamours!) Link to comment
Eva Posted November 23, 2014 Share #19 Posted November 23, 2014 I do use my starting outfit once in awhile for more casual stuff when that comes about. I like the elezen starting gear, but my favorite is the gear for hyur women with the corset. The character has a fondness for corsetted style clothing so we have long lamented not being able to be able to wear the hyur gear. Link to comment
K'nahli Posted November 23, 2014 Share #20 Posted November 23, 2014 I see it as a pretty typical piece of clothing. I don't over-analyze it too much. The super-bulky armoured players with their relic weapons having a cup of tea in the Quicksand or whatever strikes me as odd though. Link to comment

All one really needs to beat on level 50 overworld mobs in FFXIV is a high iLv weapon; not too long ago I stormed Zanr'ak with an i90 SMN book and sub-level 10 clothing. Though Titan-Egi taking aggro helped a lot for mobbing, it's no big deal if just 1 monster spawns on top of you during RP. Link to comment
Mae Posted November 23, 2014 Share #22 Posted November 23, 2014 I use the starting RSE boots and gloves fairly often on Kara(Highlander), and I'd probably get more use out of the top if I could dye it. Mallow(Lala) uses the top and hands when she's being dressy... Whisper(Roegy) uses the pants... I think that's it. Link to comment
TheLastCandle Posted November 23, 2014 Share #23 Posted November 23, 2014 I really like the Lalafell starting gear. The brief time I spent as a Lalafell, I felt like a li'l hobbit. Link to comment
Cliodhna Eoghan Posted November 24, 2014 Share #24 Posted November 24, 2014 Before I was able to get some more pieces that fit the style; I had that little red starter skirt on constantly and still wear that (and other starter pieces) pretty frequently. As long as you don't feel the clothes in question are out if character, I don't see why you can't wear starter stuff. Link to comment
Seriphyn Posted November 24, 2014 Share #25 Posted November 24, 2014 I think it's fine to RP in, but from what the NPC first says to you "Judging by your clothes, you must be a new adventurer", I do wonder what cultural origin they're from? They seem generic, and all of a matching style despite being specific to each race. Link to comment
