Sure, I'm down.

It honestly amazes me that despite the staggering amount of research that goes in to FFXIV (and WoW, too) the devs know so very little about medieval armor. FFXIV does a bit better than most, but they still show off their ignorance from time to time. For example, conventional game knowledge is that plate armor is extremely heavy. I could almost certainly see them justifying the video by saying "Well, he'd have to be quite strong to move like that!". But if we look at late-period plate armor, it barely weighs anything at all, while providing even more flexibility than what the guy from the video was wearing. Personally, I think this completely invalidates the idea that magic users can't wear armor. They'd have zero reason not to at least wear a cuirass and helmet.

If it makes you feel any better, I was actually thinking the other day that I wanted to watch this again!

Mostly just them, growling makes me giggle [To be fair I listen to a -really- wide range of music ] I'm not super fond of the harsher vocals either. Are you at all familiar with symphonic metal, then?
-
Well I'll be damned. Aya listens to Tyr. I honestly never could have guessed that. So do you listen to viking metal in general, or just them?

Secret things your character does when no one is around
Marisa replied to Aoi Fukiku's topic in Fun Prompts
Eats food that's laying around. Tries to balance things on her head. Finds out what clapping with one hand sounds like. Sings music she doesn't completely know the lyrics to. Walks around without any pants. -
Well, despite the fact that most of the bands I listen to are European, almost all power metal is done in English. However, a couple of them like to do songs in their native languages. odSADfSNdvg GVKeNGpRyzg And of course, it would be unjust of me to not mention Rhapsody. t0R7nWk8v8M

What Anime/Cartoon Character Are You?
Marisa replied to Erik Mynhier's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Well, ideally it should be Rin, But during serious RP, I always have to fight the urge to start acting like my Warhammer Commissar, or even worse, Barrett Stormsong. Ryoko is my first time playing the 'innocent young girl' character type, and I keep having to remind myself that I can't murder people for cowardice, or do interpretive dancing for opium-money. -
I honestly had nobody in mind, so I just reverse-searched a screenshot of my character's face, and picked the first image that came up. It's... kinda similar? I don't like it.

I have exactly one enemy, and of course it's a lalafell. I can't quite recall the name, but Mishka and I were dining at the Quicksand with our favorite lalafell pirate, Captain Brownie, when she showed up. She came up and interrupted our conversation, saying she'd lost her hat and insisting that we help her find it. Now, that by itself is a reasonable request. A missing hat can be very distressing, I understand. I remembered that Captain Brownie didn't have a lady lalafell for himself yet, so I decided this would be a perfect opportunity. I mean, he's a lalafell, she's a lady lalafell, it was perfect, right? So Mishka and I insisted that the two of them get married. But she wouldn't do it! She didn't realize how lucky she'd be to marry an accomplished mariner like Captain Brownie, and she started using mean words and going on about that dumb hat! Well I had a hat with me that was way better than what she was describing, so I gave it to her. And you know what? She wouldn't wear it! She finally put it on after I forced it on her head, but the moment she thought I wasn't looking, she took it off! Then she called Captain Brownie ugly and said we were stupid! I hate that dumb lalafell

A High Wind in Ishgard... A Highwind... in Ishgard... A... ... Kain... Highwind... in Ishgard... HOLY SHIT I JUST NOW GOT THAT. Half Life 3 confirmed. For serious though, I did that quest maybe a hundred times and I literally never made the connection.

I don't think I've ever done any research specifically for my Final Fantasy character other than reading the FF wiki. However, I have done some very extensive research on the history of, and daily life in, the Holy Reich. I'm a bit of a history buff, but I mainly focus on a few very specific areas, that being one of them. Now, what I do for FFXIV, is I take what I learn from the FF wiki, basically overlay that with information about middle and late-period Germany, and decide from there how things are supposed to work. Fortunately, Ryoko's really only got two things going on: living in Ishgard, and worshipping in Ishgard, both of which align very closely to the history of the Holy Roman Empire, especially in the Nordlands.

Why? I think the original post has some real value in questioning how and why we are willing to deride the power fantasy. I can look to my left and find a shelf full of books that are power-fantasies with self-indulgent special characters that are considered classics. So what the heck happened? It's not that writing got "better," I can tell you that. We aren't in some teleological state where we've discarded the power fantasy as being lesser. Well, in fiction it's just personal preference. I personally hate just about anything involving superheroes. I think the very idea is insulting to the resilience and ingenuity of normal humans. But certain media appeals to certain people, and not everyone has to like everything. However, it's a bit different when it's a group experience. I myself have had to remove a few people from Pathfinder campaigns because power-tripping ruins the fun for everyone else. Why lead a group of rag-tag adventurers on an epic quest to find Purplebeard's lost gold when your local hyper-wizard can just divine it's location and then teleport it to you? And good news, he didn't even need to get out of bed to do it. From an observer perspective, the problem with overpowered characters is that creativity basically requires restrictions. Arthur Dent had infinitely more interesting adventures than Superman ever did, because he was facing similarly impossible issues, but had none of the tools with which Superman solved those problems, forcing him to improvise. This creates compelling narrative. From an in-world perspective, superheroes cannot coexist with humans in a realistic environment, only rule us. Freedom cannot exist while Superman exists. See, it is established that Superman is greater than the combined might of all humanity. He never loses, he simply has setbacks. But eventually he wins, without fail. In this world, democracy cannot truly exist. Self-determination cannot exist. If we are allowed to make choices, it is only because Superman allows us to. Because if we upset him, he could destroy us all. We would have no recourse against him. No balance of power, no ability to rise up against tyranny. Just helpless ants being vaporized by a flying invincible jackass with laser vision. All of our elections, our wars, our revolutions, our social movements, all made irrelevant just by this one man existing. Countless millions die to shape our world, but for what purpose, when Superman has the final say? I understand that most people will never try to take a character that far. But there has to be a clear limit.

Counterexample: Rhonin and Thrall from Warcraft are almost universally hated for being Mary Sues. Rhonin is a near-omnipotent time wizard and ladies man, and Thrall is Orc-Jesus, and nobody likes either of them. Meanwhile, the only genuinely overpowered female character, Jaina, mostly flies under the radar. People just dislike her because she tries to be so god damn edgy...

Can I go to Ishgard right after purchasing Heavensward? Yoshida says "No".
Marisa replied to Blue's topic in FFXIV Discussion
World of Warcraft (aka the mmo by which all mmos are compared) often did this. You had to be a specific level and complete lengthy quest lines to access Dalaran or the Shrines in Panderia. Granted, they weren't super strict about it. There were some workarounds you could use, such as having a warlock summon you there, or getting a mage to make a portal for you. But the only natural way to get there was through questing. -
I do it. People are often caught off guard by it, sometimes want to know how it happened, but so far nobody has told me I'm wrong. Although I have to agree that being an Astrologian would require some careful explaining. That's a highly educated position, and education is very rare in Eorzea. Unless your character comes from a prominent family, you're more limited to fighting or farming, with not much in the way of book-learning. In fact, even though most people decide their characters are exempt from this, technically almost none of us should be able to read or write. It's also worth pointing out that Keepers of the Moon typically worship Mephina, who's shrine is in Coerthas. That has to show some connection, I think.

Animal Crossing is probably more Ryoko's speed.

Ryoko gets to go home and be with her dad again. Who knows, she might have even found the sword by then.
