balmung Lil' Smith Looking for a Lil' Attention
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in Chronicled Connections
Bumping this to drum up some more RP stuffs! There's a couple plots and things I have mulling around in my head right now, but the little smith is still available for RP most days! I've mostly had him doing quote-unquote "work" for the Grand Companies and the rank and file as of late... armor modifications and repairs and such. However, I'd like to have him doing more... custom orders, I suppose? Real gil doesn't need to be exchanged unless we're actually crafting something (which he can do to some degree... I haven't picked up the newer crafting books and the like and he's likely not geared enough for those anyway... ), so if you need an IC reason for how your character got that swank new piece of armor, feel free to hit up the burly Lalafell and use him as your excuse reason! His shop - despite using my FC room in Gridania until I can snag myself a small in the Goblet to pretty up - is located in the industrial district of Ul'dah, but he also frequents Limsa should your character not be fond of the Jewel or various less-than-favorable aspects of the Jewel. So, if your character might be interested in recruiting his assistance... feel free to hit me up! ... And just because I feel it needs to be updated from the original post, Chachan is currently in a relationship so that angle is spoken for. -
discussion Your thoughts on jump potions?
Gegenji replied to Parth Makeo's topic in FFXIV Discussion
All they need to implement is auto-cutscene skip. They do? Don't they already have that? I think that's only for scenes you have already seen once - in dungeons and raids and the like. You still have to manually skip the MSQ cutscenes from going around doing normal quests and stuff. -
From what we've seen, most likely yes. A great example is Yamimi Farwalker, a Plainsfolk Lalafell who hails from the Yanxia region of Othard, who follows Plainsfolk naming conventions for her forename and Doman (Raen Au Ra) naming conventions for her surname/epithet. A Doman Miqo'te would likely follow similar conventions, maintaining a Miqo'te forename (without the tribal letter) and a Doman "surname." If you want more lore on Doma and its recent history, I recommend reading this compilation. I really love this example and I wish people used it more, too many full-Japanese/Doman names on non-Doman race players, it's kinda weird seeing. *votes to have example pinned in a lore section, unless it already is* ... Now I wonder if I should've actually had a Doman last name for the Gegenjis instead of... well... Gegenji. At least I put some reasoning behind it - since it's the name of the very first of the line. Gegenji... LastNameNotProvided. I suppose he could be Gegenji Steelbender or something to fit with this and then I can totally say the lore is being maintained. Which I suppose brings up a point. Your name can really be just about anything as long as you can explain it away. Adopted by a family of a different race, it just being a nickname or title you've taken on. That sort of thing.

RuaSXl0Pl74 An oddly soothing little tune I stumbled across as if by chance. And now I share it with you.

Also, why do you "have" to be one or the other? Is it really an either/or situation here? Or are you constraining yourself to game mechanics? Think about it from a story perspective more than a game one. As a fighter, no matter what type, wouldn't it be a good idea to know how to throw a punch? And lots of martial arts also include fighting with weapons. So, there's not too much of a stretch to believe that someone could know how to both swing a big ol' sword and throw a good punch or kick if needed (such as when they're disarmed, perhaps? Or caught without their weapon?). Heck, if you need a mechanical link... isn't DRK's... Low Blow or whatever it's called a kick to the gut? Pugilism! In an RP fight, you could block a blow with your blade and then, in that brief window, let go with one hand to sock the other guy in the jaw! In RP, there really isn't a set "tank/dps/healer" meta. That's basically a game constraint and mechanic for the PvE/PvP side of things. If you're just roleplaying, then there's no real reason to confine yourself to one of those roles. Just as long as you can explain why your character can do those things - and, as I mentioned, a fighting person knowing how to throw a punch is certainly one of the least outlandish ideas I've seen thrown about.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales

But how else are people supposed to know I'm a seething pot of edge and emotions that no one can possibly understand!? -
Chachanji flustered a bit at the praise slowly piled upon him and his by the groundskeeper, feeling a quiet burning across his freckled cheeks that was of a different nature than the pink already placed there by the biting winds. His gaze flicked to Virara, though less out of concern for her trained response to the sudden movement, but more for perhaps a manner of support in changing the subject. Those violet eyes switched back to Sorimachi at that momentary wavering. Lalafellin ears were widely considered one of the sharpest on Hydaelyn, and the Gegenji child's was no less keen for having spent a life around the cacophonous din of the forge. "A-ah, 'm not all tha' charmin'..." he managed, an awkward segue from the Hyur's commentary on the Coordinator. "Though, 'm sure Mama'd be pleased by th' compliments. 'n Papa's always been pretty proud'a 'is beard... o-oh, but 's good tha' ya enjoy gardenin' 'n stuff. Always nice ta have a hobby, moreso if'n ya get ta do it as part'a yer job." The short Lalafell quieted again as they approached the manor proper, though he let out a little noise of surprise as one of the first frigid drops of rain splattered against the broad brim of his hat. When the groundskeeper hurried them under cover to avoid the rest, he proffered no argument - the weather was already brusque enough without being soaked to the bone besides. He still took a moment to doff his puffy hat - exposing his unkempt mass of ivory-frosted jade curls to the elements - and shake off what raindrops had still managed to alight themselves upon it in their hurried exodus from the open air. Another curious glance was cast betwixt factor and friend at the tossing of the cloak, fixating more on the former with another minute fluster at the bow. A fluster that faded sharply into confusion when Virara was barred entry. "W-wait, we're here t'gether, y'know? We're 'ere jus' as much fer 'er as fer me.. if'n not a bit moreso," he offered, glancing between the two as he motioned to the taller Lalafell for emphasis. He wasn't exactly the most mentally adept individual, so he continued motioning idly between Virara and himself as he tried to formulate some sort of idea or reasoning to allow his companion to enter alongside him. "I-I mean, can't she be like me... I 'unno... 'plus one' 'r whatever? Or at th' very least let 'er in so she ain't out 'ere in th' cold?" His gaze flicked back to Virara at that quiet utterance, that single word - a single letter - that slipped from her lips at her denial. Her face was set in its usual, unreadable placidity, but she was one that Chachanji had spent much time with. As a friend, as a training partner, even - at times - as an opponent. So even the smallest twitches were as glaring signals to his eyes. Even discounting his natural empathy, he immediately noted the grinding teeth that quietly flowed into the biting of the lip, the near-unreadable confusion and indignation hidden in her eyes that led to the drooping of her shoulders. Small, nearly unnoticeable things that each tugged insistently at the boy's heartstrings as he noticed them. It all built to one simple resolution: he couldn't, he wouldn't leave her out here alone. Not after coming this far together. "I ain't leavin' 'er behind," he stated, a sudden firmness creeping into his tone and slowly building as he continued. "If'n yer Coordinator knows as much as ya say 'e does, then 'e'd know I ain't one to leave anyone behind... 'specially not a friend. Never a friend." He looked back at Virara, then to Sorimachi. The stuttering, the timidness and sheepishness had all but drained away at this point. As if sapped from him by the groundskeeper's actions and Virara's reactions like the dreary chill continued to sap at their warmth even while out from beneath the icy rain. Violet, reflective orbs pierced into the Hyur's as the incessant drum of the rain continued to build around them. "Let 'im know if'n ya hafta, but Chachanji Gegenji 'n Virara Wakuwa'r both 'ere ta meet wit 'im."

Calling all Dragoon roleplayers or friends! Dragoon jumping?
Gegenji replied to Redrick's topic in RP Discussion
If I'm reading that last quote right, that seems about right specifically for the Azure Dragoon. It's not so much "burying" it, though, as placing it behind various wards and seals to be retrieved by whoever might next take up the mantle. It's basically "resetting" the puzzle for the next challenger once he steps down. ... Though, if there's only one drachen mail specifically for the Azure Dragoon, you'd wonder how you'd ever actually have more than one (which is what happens in the DRG chain due to WoL Special Snowflakeyness). As for the other Dragoons, I suppose it could either way. On the one hand, perhaps they are laid to rest with their armor as a sign of honor and respect. On the other, it could be stripped from them to be used by the next since they apparently were going through them rather quickly and thus can't be squandering resources having to reforge a whole new set of armor for the next Dragoon taking up the role. Maybe a combination of the two? Like, if they die in battle they're buried with their armor, but if they step down or retire they'd have to give it back? Hard to say, really. -
Is it bad I was immediately reminded of this thing when I saw this? (After mentioning it would obviously be Godbert, of course) QhgoJYsvQJk The actual answer for my characters would be a bit more... boring? Well, probably more predictable. One's engaged and the other is actively dating someone. So they'd likely go with their significant others.

Godbert, obviously.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Gegenji replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Reminds me of T5 parties asking people to know past divebombs and having no clue where to stack for them. You mean those aren't parties to get people who know the fight just so they can carry you through them? -
Ultimately? Let them whine and play what you want. If you feel your character clicks best as a Miqo'te, then have her as a Miqo'te. The popularity of the race really shouldn't hinder your choice to be one.
-
I suppose the two best options I can think of is: a.) Portray your character in a way that makes people want to approach them. Keep in mind, this doesn't have to be positive things. Gogon actually received quite a bit of attention at the Runestone by ragging on the fighters from the sidelines, and he's pretty anti-social. You'll still want your characters to be doing some sort of INTERACTION, still, otherwise you'll have that wallflower issue of sitting around emoting hopefully interesting solo RP and banking on someone picking up on it. b.) OOC communication. Throw out a Making Connections thread for the guy if you haven't already, get in touch with people. It may feel a little bit like staging the meeting, but it might help broaden the character's acquaintance pool if you and the other person can figure out OOCly how the two would bump into each other and ultimately end up interacting.

He was also either clicking the same move a couple times to get it to "register" or he was royally screwing up his rotations. ... I'm also disappointed there were no major cooldowns in there. Not even... what's it called again? Fight or Flight? The damage boost. -
But what if it's Al'Kohawl, stout Primal of Beer and Spirits? Called by the patrons' desire for a cheap drink? Then I think we'd see the death squads roll in to quietly dispose of an entire bar of tempered patrons. Not a good look. What if... what if Momodi is the Primal of Alcohol? :surprise:

I think, ultimately, one of the key aspects of roleplaying comes out stronger in this situation than any other - communication. It's a vital key for any RP, but it seems all the more important when you're bringing in an existing character and trying to play as them. Think about it, even with your personal character, you usually want to make sure that whoever you're RPing with is okay with rolling with whatever you're putting down - whether it's that your character is a minor merchant, a noble of some note, or a master of black and white magic, to go down a "line" of suspension. If you look at it in the abstract, saying you're playing the Sultana or one of the Scions or what-have-you is kind of along that same premise. The only issue is, I suppose, for generic walk-up RP... but even then there's a sort of similar connection. Many folks pick at and poke fun at the half-voidsent and the manifested primals and other odd character ideas that are apparently taking a break from whatever realm-shaking things they're doing to just sit in the Quicksand and have a beer. Seems kind of similar to how someone would react to the Sultana coming in for one as well, no? It's a matter of imposing something in a public setting that may be "forcing" you to accept something into your character's "canon" that you may not like or want. So you ignore it entirely or write it off as someone being a bit touched in the head. Which is why it comes back to communication. Playing such an idea - whether it be some great demon or Minfilia - works better in an enclosed environment because you can ensure that all those participating are on board and willing to accept that concept. It's just harder to do that in open-world RP because there's just so many folks around - especially on Balmung - that the chance someone or someones is going to have an issue with it arises, and that they feel they're being "forced" to accept it because it's occurring right out in the open. And so ire arises. Ultimately, and it's sort of the lackluster fallback statement of the RPC at this point, "you can play whatever you want, people just may not like it." So, if you're playing something you're not sure most people are going to jive with... I'd recommend just asking them first. And if you're doing a scene out in the open, maybe keep the RP in party chat so that those open-world RPers don't feel like they're being "forced" to accept the fact that the Sultana had a little bit too much to drink and needs someone to hold her hair back over the planter in the corner. That way you can have your RP, they can have their RP, and no one really feels like one's imposing on the other. ... Oddly enough, I suppose it's kinda like ERP. You know it's happening, but people don't seem to mind it too much because it's all being kept to party chat and tells.

Calling all Dragoon roleplayers or friends! Dragoon jumping?
Gegenji replied to Redrick's topic in RP Discussion
If I recall correctly, there was actually a thread a while back that kind of went into how Dragoons jump pretty in-depth. It was mostly fanon theorycrafting, though, as nothing really states how the technique is performed. I believe ideas ranged from a Samurai Jack-style "No, jump good." to possibly utilizing personal aether focused on one's legs. -
Lorebook stuff! And a weigh-in by Sounsyy! That helps. So I was right in remembering that there were different "aspects" of the Echo one could have, either in part or in whole. And that the Sahagain technically had it too, though it being "gifted" by the Ascians is something that slipped my mind. Going with the three in the Lorebook, Krile can Transcend Words, Minfilia can Transcend Worlds (though I wonder if she had anything else before that and this bit was mostly due to the Mothercrystal claiming her as a voice), and the WoL can do all three because WoL. So... which one of those did the Sahagin Priest have? Unless Trascending Worlds included the realms of the living and the dead and basically having that Ascian-immortality going. Or there's other aspects of it that are being withheld and thus weren't mentioned in the lorebook. However, I wonder if having the Echo and being a being of hero of history/"chosen" and all that is a square and rectangle situation. You know, "all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares." To wit, these heroes of time had the Echo, but having the Echo doesn't leave you fated to do great things. Though the whole being "touched by Hydaelyn" part makes it seem unlikely, though that could also be a bit of an exaggeration and many could be "touched" in such a manner who don't really answer the call. Unless the Ascians were also "touched," either by Hydaelyn herself or their counterpart (Zodiark?). Hm. Well, if it does end up being a "for special people only" thing... at least there's been IC workarounds to tempering. I know a couple FCs that have gone after primals using a special device that helps block that sort of thing. Though, one has to wonder how important that is, unless the original poster's history requires the character to have survived a tempering rather than avoiding it through other means. Bypassing language is a different issue... but sometimes linguistics itself can be fun. I mean, I have an alt I haven't really used who is basically a linguistics specialist and can speak several other languages because that's his skill set rather than having the Echo. EDIT: A bunch of minor edits based off posts that happened while I was writing this! And some minor spelling fixes noticed after-the-fact. ... I still think it should be fine to play as having at least a minor Echo aspect regardless, though!
-
That's just it, though. That bit of Echo ability seems to be unique to the WoL - Minfilia and Krile don't have it, and yet they still possess "the Echo." And if I'm remembering the Sahagin-Having-the-Echo thing... then it had an ability that even the WoL didn't have - the ability to jump from body to body. It just seems that there are various aspects to the Echo that a person may or may not have. The given one is the immunity to tempering, I think, but the others are not guaranteed. That said, there's nothing keeping something being revealed down the line that makes it far more special or harder to have. Like, I dunno, that the Echo is actually the manifestation of having an Ascian in your bloodline or something, and thus it's just what Ascian powers you get. And the WoL just happens to have the most concentrated Echo-blood so they have access to everything. But that's a lot of maybe and for-fun conjecture. As it stands, it seems to be a rare trait, but not a unique one.
-
Honestly? I think it's fine. I've seen quite a few RPers who apparently have the Echo in some facet, and there was a whole organization in 1.0 that revolved around finding and gathering up those with the talent. Even in the modern version of FFXIV, we see a couple folks besides the WoL who possess the Echo: Minfilia, Krile, and I think that Sahagin chieftain or whatever also had some aspect of it? So, while it might be rare, it's not exactly "WoL-only" like some of the other things that people could claim - like being the Azure Dragoon or a non-Padjali White Mage. Plus, I believe it was mentioned somewhere that there are various different "versions" of the Echo that someone can possess. Like, the WoL's allows them to understand all languages and have those brief "visions" of peoples' pasts - but I don't think Minfilia had either of those and I think Krile's just allowed for language comprehension? So, if you want to basically have a "Krile-style" Echo, which is what sounds like you're going for, you should be perfectly fine.

discussion When to SPEAK, when to THINK, and when to DESCRIBE
Gegenji replied to Kallera's topic in RP Discussion
I feel this is a relevant clip for this discussion: sFBhR4QcBtE In all seriousness, though, I like to believe it's simple enough to give general emotes that can kinda-sorta tell what your character is thinking for others to pick up on. However - and I've seen people do this - when you're doing paragraphs of what's going on in your character's head a la a film noir scene, it might be necessary to trim it down some and remember that, as mentioned, most other characters are not mind-readers and a lot of that would be impossible for them to pick up on. I think a hard-and-fast compromise is adding just enough to provide enough context for the message you're trying to convey to your partner in the RP scene. * She hesitated, having been burned once before by something like this. * He cast the line with the experience of several cycles experience at fly fishing. * He took in the scent, closing his eyes as memories of grandma's home cooking flitted across his mind. ... I dunno. Something like that. -
