The Great Crash of '15 - Gripes and Rants Are Going Heavensward
Magellan replied to Nero's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Hehe .... for the past two weeks... everytime one of my friends was like 'why aren't you excited about Heavensward? Where is your hype?' I would be like... 'why would I be? You know it's gonna be hard to get in, and have all sorts of problems. I'll be excited when it's actually playable and stable.' I had plenty of other things planned/lined up this weekend, and wasn't counting on playing FFXIV at all. Tried for about 20 mins to log in, then moved on to other things for the night -
I've yet to encounter a character on these forums or in this game that isn't. Lol. Pretty much this. Simply the act of playing a Miqo, traditional or no, is a cliche, simply because they are SO ABUNDANT in both the rp and greater community. The mere presence of their numbers alone kind've shatters their lore. The point is; ain't none of us original around here, so just rp what interests you and have fun doing it

Imo, Balmung is mostly FC and Housing areas rp, plus regular tavern rp at the Quicksand. However, it is also a very strong, welcoming and tolerant community, and I'm sure you could find a home here (You just need to get up early to bypass character lockouts and sneak a character on)

The Great Crash of '15 - Gripes and Rants Are Going Heavensward

Plus SE has it so all characters can do all the classes and jobs and crafts without a problem so in theory the lockout with creating alts is understandable. From SE'S perspective it makes perfect sense. The problem lies in... given the way the game allows you to be any class, who would need alts? Rpers of course. Combine the fact that there was no official rp server designated, AND rpers settled on Balmung, one of the most populated servers, and you end up with disgruntled people -
They only marry them, from the description, it says reproductive mates are chosen from a lot, this I think kinda implies they just put their names in a hat and pull out an Au Ra female and males name, now they go make Snu Snu and I assume it's the same for the horses, though ofcourse a bit more of an Auri themed lot than the hat idea. So... do they know how to ride a horse or not? Oh gods, I am going to have such a hard time taking X'aela seriously...

I am so.... SO happy I chose Raen right about now...

Claire is a semi - professional culinarian. She has icly gone to an Academy to learn cooking, interned at the Bismrack, worked at a restaurant in Wineport, catered a wedding, and hosted dinner parties. Now she has aspirations of opening her own restaurant. Admittedly, this kind of rp is not for all, but I find it fun, and in her circle she runs into a lot of IC crafters and gatherers ")

I really don't think there can be a general consensus on glamours or fantasias. They are too volatile and disruptive within many people's rp to be considered as server wide canon. I think it's a case by case basis of who's willing to accept what. I am very thankful none of my characters have to deal with a 'surprise, I'm an Au ra!' But I don't begrudge people for doing what they want to do. If they want to arbitrarily change their character into a new race, fine. If they have valid reasons for it; even better. But IC actions have IC consequences, and they should be prepared for IC confusion, disbelief, and even estrangement, as many people do not play glamours or fantasias as well known, readily available, or even existent. Playing a machinist before the technology reached Eorzea would have raised a lot of eyebrows, just as having been a race all along that just recently got chased out of their homeland and into eorzea will do the same thing. Again people should do what they want, but there will likely be a lot of IC confusion and odd interactions in the weeks immediately following HW

Personally, I very much prefer C'kayah's recommendation. But this is you. You do what you like best, and what seems most fun for your character.

Not Getting Early Access - What Are Your Plans?
Magellan replied to Melodia's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Well, if my comment about my first Playstation indicates anything... a year and a half would be a super-SHORT wait for me... as I am often willing and able to wait a good 5 years or more for things if I need to. Honestly.... as a gal dipping into her late 30s... time often feels like it passes wayyyy too quickly these days any ways (5 years is how long it took me to get through college and that felt like it flew by in a blink)! I'm still rocking a ps2 c: I feel ya! -
My very first wallpaper on my very first computer: ... words cannot express...

Not Getting Early Access - What Are Your Plans?

Hehe. I still haven't ordered my copy. Not sure when I will. I'm sort 've in denial about the existence of HW. I still have so much to do in ARR that the idea of new content is overwhelming ^^; Oh well. I'll probably order it for the Au Ra, and keep plugging away at current content. -
Well my FC just formed, so we don't have a house yet. But rooms for rent is one of the things we've planned for. We're even gonna have a roommates system for those who want a roomate, aka insta rp buddy. Add Claire Fialo or Sola Rose if u r interested. The house will be in the Mists

Heheh.... I feel like this used to happen all the time in Tera. I do agree with some of the others that it's a rather quick and cheap ploy to ramp up the drama, is overused, gets resolved too quickly, and often doesn't have a solid reason behind WHY the kidnapping occurred, other than 'need a reason for conflict'. I've had one pretty decent kidnapping plot in FFXIV, and one pretty terrible one.... that actually did go for several days... which had the curious side effect of taking all the core rpers (read: officers) out of IC availability for about a week while they looked for the kidnapee, which thrust the entire FC into a state of rp limbo.

RP Idea: Is this too crazy? Feedback wanted!
Magellan replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
My only thought would be, if these tattoos are supposed to be visible, you're likely going to have to explain them (and their use) ICly to everyone you meet. Which honestly, sounds like too much work to me -
Sadly, for the most part, I think they will be assimilated without anyone batting an eyelid. RP in Eorzea sometimes seems to be a bit like the SS Enterprise, where everyone is happy and tolerant, and accepting. It would certainly spice things up a bit if the racial divisions that do exist in Eorzea (Wildwood vs Keeper, Duskwight vs everyone, Highlanders vs Ul'dah) were more of a thing, but they really aren't. With that said (and maybe I'm a hypocrite) my characters generally ARE pretty tolerant and accepting, and would likely not have any problem with them. However, they would have a problem with the Au Ra's who were like 'surprise! We were Au Ra all along' as they'd generally see that as dishonest, a breach of trust, and well.... since it's going to be so prevalent, it's something I'm going to OOCly steer my character away from, as any overused trope can almost lead to parody, and complete disillusionment. For example, imagine my character suddenly finds out 60% of her friends were actually Lalafellian this whole time, including her lover and best friend. She'd feel pretty betrayed right? But beyond that, she'd think the whole world was going crazy, or that she was... for not having noticed before. So yea... gonna be steering away from the 'aha, gotcha!' Au Ra storylines.

Heheh I love Erutan. My bard's music reflects hers quite a bit.

Feels like too much realism to me. When I first started the game back in beta, almost immediately my question was; 'Wait, how does melee survive against magic users? I mean, they are basically taking a fireball to the face, and still walking away from it?' It was then pointed out to me that in the Final Fantasy universe, this is quite common. See Squall getting pegged by Edea's Ice spell in FFVIII... or Squall getting stabbed by Siefer. Or Cloud getting run through by Sephiroth and surviving. Or Vincent shooting people and not killing them. Or Zack getting shot about a hundred times before dying. People in Final Fantasy games.... they ain't like us. They're made of tougher stuff (in FFXIV thta would be aether) and are much harder to kill. Even if they take a bullet.

My main is a Seeker who was raised by a Hyur mother. Never caused any issue. Go for it!

I'm gonna piggyback on top of Tiergan's piggybacking (oink oink) and just say this: I'm not even popular, and I can understand where Tier is coming from. I used to be on the other side of the fence: a new rper, in a strange new environment, thinking to myself: omg! pit of despair! why don't these popular folks wanna rp with me!??? And I would see other new rpers have the same struggle, and churn, and churn, and churn inside. Until I decided to do something about it. I started to have rp classes and events SPECIFICALLY for new rpers. And because of it.... became popular (of sorts). And then... aha! I saw things from the other side. Recently, I opened up my character Claire as a sort of 'making connections' character personified. She would meet with your character, make notes on their interests, and try to set them up with other characters who have similar interests. It was great! She had all kinds of rp! Always meeting someone new, trying to get that connection for them, reveling when it succeeded, trying harder when it didn't.... until I began to notice something. Claire no longer had time for Claire. She was so busy connecting everyone else, she hadn't connected with anyone herself. All her friends... barely got to rp with them. It left me feeling drained, burnt out.... and like I had separated Claire from actual IC friendships and relationships. And now... I'm on a break from her until I can sort her out again! Cliques really aren't a bad thing. And yes, I see countless new people make the same mistake many of us have when we first start rping.... instead of going out and making a clique of their own, they keep throwing themselves against the wall trying to break into a pre-existing clique. Find your own posse, gang. You can do it! I swear! I very much enjoy meeting new people, and am, in fact, quietly trying to do just that on my new character. ...but I'm doing so organically. I'm no longer going to schedule rp out days in advance, only to have to keep putting people off because RL comes up or... *shocker* ... I just don't feel like rping that day. And I'm going to take the time to forge deeper, more steadfast friendships with my new character. Cuz honestly, both she and I deserve it. She should have a small group of people she wants to spend lots of time with, and I'm going to give it to her. I look forward to her adventure, and maybe seeing some of you in it

I do love me some IC dungeon runs. I'll try to get in touch with you.
