  1. In my opinion, presentation is everything. I honestly can't think of a way that "I'm a voidsent" can be presented to me, personally, without me taking a step back and scratching my head and double-checking the lore, but I'm sure it can be done. Like I said, I think presentation is everything but the crazier your idea is, the harder you have to work on presentation. Anything's possible I suppose. Yeah, that's pretty much where my brain's been sittin. I think it's the concept of being faced with some phenomenal cosmic power that a character claims to have that halts me more than the idea: "I'm a voidsent!" "Great. So you're a powerful being of darkness..." *spits out a couple feeble Blizzard spells that couldn't cool off a sweet tea* "That's... all I got." "...you're kidding." "I was fired from my last job in Tam Tara. They said I wasn't scary enough. I've been demoted to pretending to be some Aldgoat out near Camp Drybone for people's leves." ". . ." "Okay, NOW I'm kidding." What do we have to work with in game? Strict lore and plausible filling in of gaps in lore. Unlike real world histories and legends, game lore is a mere skeleton of stories (some very detailed, granted) and we are left to fill in the blanks where we can. Someone wants to be a living suit of armor (met one in the Quicksand once). "Does it fit the lore we have?" "Is it plausible?" "Does it fit within the spirit of FF games?" These are all questions I run through my head when faced with unusual character ideas. Me, I draw the line at invulnerability. Ok, you say you're a god walking around... if we are battling and I /random higher than you, I better be able to punch you in the godly nose.
  2. You're not alone. Had this guy since ARR launch, and no one's rolled their eyes at me. I'm also not RPing a voidsent though. I think it takes a lot of crazy colors to make people roll their eyes at just your character's looks. But yes, I meant specifically about rping as a voidsent. All I'm doing is just rolling with a fresh take on all the quests and stuff as they are presented. Like "why on earth would Hydaelyn even pick this guy?" and stuff like that. I'm not the type of person to shove my ideas in anyone's face (so in this case, it's just a weird looking character as far as anyone else is concerned. And in the case of my character who went through a horrific experience, you wouldn't know unless you saw him without his shirt on and asked about the scar). Could this be what makes the difference? How it's presented?
  3. Up until recently, I've felt rather strongly about avoiding any over-the-top character stuff. Then I sat down and played a couple older FF games. While playing, it occurred to me... y'know FF itself isn't exactly known for low key characters. And /you/ are still the star of your story (you're just working with others since it's a mmo). I am personally still not fond of really stretching the edges of lore, but if you find folks that like your story and want to play along, go for it and have fun! That's the important part. And yeah, telling randoms you're a voidsent/dullahan/alien/etc might get you an "okay.jpg" in response, so just be aware of that. I've used em myself as a plot device: One of my characters was tortured by a couple mages and had a voidsent shoved into his chest. Had to have that sucker surgically & magically removed and he's pretty traumatized by the whole event. (It's now sealed away in a jar.) Voidsent are used a lot in game, so, while they are creepy as heck, I don't feel they are all that uncommon. Side note: I actually had an idea to make a young voidsent character who tries to fit in with the rest of Eorzean society. So, on some other random server, I have this strange looking lala and running around as him just makes me giggle. A lot. Sometimes out loud. >.> If I brought him to Balmung, I would probably get a ton of rolled eyes. lol. I'm having fun though. ^^
  4. I'm happy they are adding more houses, but I REALLY wish SE had added the apartments first. I would think that would alleviate the mad dash for housing this time.
  5. This is really nice! Similar to a travel guide.
  6. Lore confusion! *sends up flare* Isn't Idyllshire (Dravania) a Sharlayan city (well, was)? I remember Alphinaud talking about how he was born there but didn't stay long since everyone (minus Matoya ofc) fled. So if you're Sharlayan, you would pick Dravania? Or no?
  7. I don't remember if this was listed on the original, I'm afraid. Abalathia's Spine (Hellsguard homeland)
  8. A few new themes have been added over time that may be of interest to you. Two new ones are Race Specific & Location Specific. Let me know if you would like your group's themes updated! I have a question for you guys... I'm trying to keep labels from being too unwieldy and am getting real close with the Merchant set of labels. Within here I have: merchants, traders, resource procurers, and information traders. Similarly, within the School set, I'm including schools, academies, colleges, and libraries. Some of these sub-themes may actually be quite different from others within the same 'umbrella' (for example, a knowledge hoarding library may not be set up as some type of learning environment and, in fact, may have more in common with information traders). Any suggestions on whether (and how) to separate these out? I want to keep it simple in here. :tonberry:
  9. Oooh, glad you asked this! I started a FC plot a little while ago a bit spontaneously and I'm running into a lot of these issues.
  10. Dooood... I LOVE taking unconventional parties through content. It's way fun (and you learn a lot about game mechanics). (2 manned Hullbreaker a year ago) https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/11194627_1587237218228087_7564624619174145374_o.jpg[/img]
  11. You're very welcome! Got you added in. Also... new category! Woot! :moogle:
  12. Few weeks back, I got 3 hardcore raiders (I checked lodestone after the run) in the Antitower, WAR and I forgot the other dps classes. I barely had to heal at all. Stuff just melted in front of them. We're talking 1 set of adds/mechanics per boss. All I could think of afterwards was: oh. Man... did I even need to be there? I definitely learned the difference between those that try (or can, in this case) and those that just don't bother (when you get to the 4th round of mechanics on a boss and start thinking "is the dps really low here, or am I imagining things?"). I get having an off day or whatever, we all have em, but when all 4 members of the party are the "just gonna coast" sort... it certainly drags things down. That being said, I got a bouncy DRK in expert recently. He was jumping and moving back and forth around the room so much (not due to aoe)... and we had a MNK in the party. I asked if he could try holding things still for the MNK, but no dice. ADHD maybe? Not sure.
  13. Alright! You guys have been added in. Sorry to hear the old group didn't work out. Best of luck to you in the future! :moogle:
  14. I've been thinking about the same thing! http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=15276&pid=254235#pid254235 Would be really cool to set stuff up at different places sometimes.
  15. I'll watch for ya. Feel free to contact one of us in game if you see us online

  17. We're still talking assumptions here. Look, I play three characters, two of which I honestly couldn't say which counts as my "main" for this census or much else for that matter. 1. Character I've been playing the longest, has all of the story and game events done, but RP has only been happening since I transferred her to Balmung a few months ago (not counting some character stories I posted to Lodestone a few times over the past couple years.) Now has her own in-depth story arc that I try to get to outside of the usual tome farming and stuff. In gameplay terms, she is my "main". 2. Character I've been playing on Balmung the longest. Due to leading a good sized FC on another server, besides some events here and there, he wasn't played much til about half a year ago or so when I started playing as him a lot more. This is the character people on this server 'met' me as. He's the one I drag to most RP events. He's almost done with HW msq (3.0), but due to 3.2 taking my time (yay new stuff) he's been stopped at the same point for months. Any RP with this guy is WAY more casual than the other two, but he's been the same 'character' since 2013 when he sat around in the Gridanian Adv. Guild trying to have a drink. Hell, I could even provide a convincing argument for my third... But no, I don't see the "main" question as clear cut and I doubt I'm the only one. I'm ultimately okay with the final decision of "you gotta pick one", I'm just saying why it's not necessarily an easy decision to some folks (and hence the "picking a favorite child" comment). ^^; (eta: Decided to re-do in favor of the suggestions that RP > PvE for the purpose of this questionnaire. I thought only the first two questions would be different, but really nearly all the answers changed. )
  18. I think the thing with the alts is that you're basically asking us to pick a favorite child. :v Hell, even now I'm wondering if I should pm you to ask for a do-over just due to the RP vs PvE "Main" conflict (which still hasn't been clarified. lol). I am curious over what "voting power" comes with this census though.
  19. I'll bend it if the situation calls for it. Game lore doesn't cover every eventuality and sometimes you just get put on the spot with a question or something and have to pull an idea out your ass. >.>; I really try to go with 'plausible' and steer clear of anything too OP.
  20. Hopefully griefers are too lazy to go all the way to some backwoods ARR location. (If they do show up, we could just treat them like crazy people. ) As for open world RP that I stumble into... I'm never sure if it's open or not. It could be some FC's RP night or some other group with an ongoing (ie closed) story arc that I don't wanna mess up. We could try a "RP Now" thread, but I'd still use the PF for those who (like me) are on consoles and may not be actively online on a computer/phone right then. But I would love to have someone post here as well! I have a couple characters that would be out and about for various reasons; would be nice to dust em off. :moogle:
  21. Reviving my old thread for some written brainstorming I've been doing lately. I'm wondering if there are RP 'hotspots' of sorts. Like folks RPing Ala Mhigan refugees or those working with them down in Little Ala Mhigo, some Garleans hanging out at CWW or some other Imperial outpost, fighters in the Gladiator or Pugilist Guilds, hunters in Tailfeather, Duskwights skulking... somewhere, etc. Of my main characters, Tin is most suited to casual RP. (He's going to be bartending over at the new Roe HQ, so feel free to drop by for a drink!) I do have a couple others suitable, but I'm still working on making them more full-fledged personalities rather than just background characters to my mains. Now I'm kinda wondering if this would be better termed "Pop Up RP" since it makes more sense to go set up in a location, then put up a PF welcoming anyone interested in whatever theme we got going on at the time. /endbrainstorming
