discussion Roleplaying a Xaela of the Sagahl Tribe
ExAtomos replied to Kaiserin's topic in Lore Discussion
Yeah, but what if you wanted to do them IC? Do people really never RP adventuring at all? From what I have read here and encountered in game, the vast majority do not RP as the Warrior of Light, which is what you are due to the events of the msq. I have done quite a few RP dungeons, but the reasons we go in have nothing to do with the quest the game offers. In the case of the Sagahl, if you held to the tenets of the tribe and harmed no animals, you would be stopped by the level 1 quest that has you go out and kill 3 types of animals. You literally cannot go through msq as a Sagahl unless as one who has deviated and now kills animals. On a side note... think of the Qestir who believe all words are lies and choose not to speak. Yet many cutscenes show your character retelling events that just occurred to a npc that wasn't present for the fight (or whatever). Interesting philosophical conundrum there. -

Easy, don't do those IC. -
If you hit O/Open your social menu (Image in the spoiler box), then right click on your own name you'll get the option to edit your search info. There's not much space but you can squeeze in just enough to let people know you roleplay and such If you are on ps4, you can also target yourself and use square button to open the menu that includes Edit Search Info (as well as use the party list) Also, it has a serious character limit. 60 or 150... something like that. You have to be very succinct in there; it's def not for character biographies.

I'll check their user info, then their FC info. I prefer user info that gives me something to work with; if it just says [rp], I'll keep walking. Recently, I've taken to writing current physical appearance in the info box like: Burned on right half of body, partially healed (or "Pulls down sleeve to hide burn marks") Glances furtively around before shuffling away. A friendly face. I've had more success with these than anything else I've squished into that limited space. eta: I may be wrong, but it really seems like for every one person that will just march right up to initiate RP with someone, there's 9 that won't. So you have a bunch of people just sitting around all night, hoping someone will walk up. I've initiated conversation and I've been ignored more times than I can count as the person/people nearby have either a friend or someone else who is more palatable to their RP style walk up. So, you kind of have to be okay with rejection.

I wanna post a couple things folks should know about the LS... 1. People sometimes use this LS to vent about rough experiences they've had in the DF. It's understandable. It's probably the main reason most of us have joined up. Feel free to vent for a bit, just remember to balance it out with good stuff. 2. It's not an "official" rule cause I'm hoping I don't have to tell folks about this... But please be kind. Venting is one thing, name-calling and chastising people in the LS just isn't cool. Please don't. 3. Related to the above, sometimes hot-button topics come up (dpsing while healing, speedruns, whether people raid or not, etc). I'm fine with discussion about these things; they are all topics integral to the game (plus I'm fascinated by everyone's view on things), just remember

Right now, we still have room. We'll be looking over the member list soon and removing those who haven't logged in for some time.

You can make cloth out of tree bark and fibrous plants or grasses (cotton, hemp, and linen are in game. Other irl options include fabric made from kudzu or papyrus, as well as barkcloth). For the whole "how to deal with animals" thing, look at this wiki on a specific part of Jainism. And this CNN article on The Mundari, a tribe that reveres cows. -
I'll also do the "duck out of sight to get changed" thing. As far as keeping multiple gear sets handy... I just kind of hand wave a Mary Poppins' carpet bag or chocobo saddle bags. For being able to swap from using a staff to an axe... a tunic and pants or whatever won't impede my being able to swap weapons IC, so I don't see why wearing say bard dungeon gear means I can't pick up a sword if someone rushes me. OOC I would have to change gear just because the game demands it. I just cover it by saying I've not changed clothes and my RP partners need to suspend disbelief for a moment (or, depending on situation, I'll ask that they retcon the new gearset). I think everyone I've rped with does something similar. If you mean just... is there anything in quest text about quickchanging gear like some anime hero, I don't think so, at least not that I've seen. At this point it sounds more like a problem in dealing with a new member that won't play along with the rest of the group. >.>;

Who have you met from video games?
ExAtomos replied to Delilah Scythewood's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Had an FC mate come stay at my house while he had an interview in a nearby town. Figured it'd be nice to help out. -
Sure Please look for one of the leaders in game for invites.

I may throw Valia at Oyuu... it may go well, it may go very badly... Feel free to check her wiki linked in my sig below! If you would like, we can brainstorm a few reasons how they'd meet.

other servers RP: Mateus Stay or Leave
ExAtomos replied to tanorod's topic in Chronicled Connections
Have to ask, though it's a damn longshot... you ever play Lensmoor? -
Aw, I was wondering where you guys disappeared to! <3 Here are a couple pics of Levelers in their natural RP environment taken by myself and Aghurlal. :moogle:
-
All good questions, Aghur! Way I see it, until we get to just under full (like within 5), every alt is welcome. If we get to max capacity, I'll ask that folks think about alts they may have that they don't play much (like several days go by without some substantial time being put into them; actually rp or leveling for a while, not just logging in to check retainers or doing GC turn ins). I have two I can let go, for example. After that, we'll look at the roster for those that aren't playing (There's a couple new characters that joined then never logged in again). If we reach max even with these filters, we'll think about what to do then.
-
I would say that, since you are only roleplaying (or rather, journaling) outside of game, do what you wish. In game is when it gets tricky when it comes to RPing as the WoL or other high-powered character.

There have been a number of new, themed RP FCs lately, so I wanted to give this thread a bump for visibility! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions! :moogle:

Y'all have raised really good point about experience and age. I'm on the "wrong side" of 40 myself, so this is the viewpoint I'm coming from. If I think about my teenager, will she have the same level of proficiency in the various things I've learned over the years? No. But then too, there is a big difference between my teenager and someone who has grown up having to become an adult in a hurry (for example, if you had to start mining at age 8, you're going to be a lot better at it by the time you're 20 than someone who didn't start til they were an adult). And I feel Eorzea is more of the latter with the mix of quasi-medieval and fantasy violence/wars going on. So, for example, I RP with a character that grew up hunting. They have various proficiencies that are related to hunting (not just ranged weapon use) and are good at them; they have also picked up unrelated skills due to being on their own as an adventurer for the past handful of years. Even though the character is just shy of 20, they can claim to be skilled at these abilities. Could they be 'better' at these abilities than someone older? In my opinion sure, unless the other person also grew up in that environment AND have more years of experience doing them (ie older). Flaws are something we all have as a result of our experiences (lawd knows I do) and I think our characters should have them too, for the same reasons. I suggest not just randomly assigning a flaw to the character for the sake of balance, but instead letting it evolve naturally or on the fly as you RP.
-
Also, check characters' user info for something along the lines of "walkup welcome". (Just be aware not everyone actually means it.) I prefer a quick tell first, myself, because I don't stay IC all the time. I would suggest finding a themed RP LS or FC to start with. It gives you potential plots to work with and a ready group of people to interact with. Good luck! :moogle:

I kind of compare it to real life. IRL, someone can be a skilled singer and guitar player, good with math, and an excellent car mechanic. They are also learning to fence and perform stage combat and enjoy reading books in their spare time. They can be good and proficient at all these things and many more. But there is a big difference between their skills, even though they are good at these things, and someone who has dedicated their life to singing opera and perform for the Met. That level of skill is phenomenal. But of course, the opera singer does other things as well outside of singing. So, to me, saying "my character is skilled at both white and black magic and must take some ridiculous flaw to balance it" is more... martial arts movie rather than reflective of real life (magic use aside for the moment). In many martial arts movies, someone is only good at martial arts because they have dedicated their whole life to it, to the exclusion of everything else. (Caveat: This has long been a pet peeve of mine. When I played tabletop RP, I'd get frustrated at the skill point limit. I would think, "IRL I can do this, this, this, AND this with some measure of proficiency... but my fantasy character can't have an equal number of skills?")(But then too, it doesn't help that some systems label 1 or 2 dots in an ability as "you suck at this". ) Dunno if it makes a difference, but my characters will never be god-like. They can be very good at multiple skills, but none are able to create life or destroy worlds. Some people do enjoy that level of drama, so maybe having an exaggerated flaw to balance the character's powers makes sense? I'm not sure.

This is very similar to my situation. When I started being active on the RPC, I had three 'mains'; now I have five as well. As far as gameplay goes, they are either through HW or staring down that long tunnel of 2.1-2.55. I love swapping between them because each is their own unique character and all are fun to play as. (bolded for empahsis) And I completely understand this. There was one time a new minor plot line was introduced to one of my characters and I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT IT. I say it's minor, but it wasn't so minor to the other player who has one character to keep track of. I'm still so embarrassed about this. Nothing makes me happier in game than to debate who I want to take to an event, juggle multiple story lines, and make progress in gameplay. I probably should invest in a notebook at this point, rather than relying on memory for plots I have going on. Maybe it's a relic of when I was little and an only child, I'm too used to imagining my own friends to play with. lol. Both of these being said, I can see how my playing so many alts cuts into the time and concentration I spend on my RP partners, especially those who play only as one character AND have limited time in game (unlike me who practically lives in game outside of work). I tend to have an easier time with other altoholics since we both can offer a spread of cards, so to speak, and pick and chose which story line catches our fancy right then. To a certain extent, I am actually jealous of those that can just play as one character and derive plenty of enjoyment from that.

Here are some current story arcs I have going: Brinn convinces Valia to move in with him so they both can heal. Brinn’s burns will heal in time, but the only person who knew how to heal Valia’s injury was recently killed in a magic battle. He’s got quite a search ahead of him. Ralin finds the information in Ul’dah’s legal archives that nearly got him killed, what to do with it? Tin is involved in some shady business of raiding Imperial outposts for profit; who’s buying and what are they doing with it? Alberic is leading a silver caravan from Fallgourd Float through Whitebrim and over to Dragonhead. Is this mission all that it appears to be? (This is happening at the next Wednesday night Tavern if you've signed up!) If you are interested in joining in any of the above plot lines, drop me a message! Feel free to post some of your own if you'd like to open up some of your RP to the group! :moogle:

discussion Going Lalafell, distinct decline in RP?
ExAtomos replied to Lamiaris's topic in RP Discussion
Yeah, there's a huge difference between disdain for lore reasons (for example, against Duskwights due to their being thieves and sneaks) and for reasons that are purely ooc based. Lore I can work with, I can't do anything with mindsets like "all people who play lalas are no good". But y'all have raised a good point... are those who RP as lalafell being lumped in with those who are just trolling? I have no problem blacklisting trolls with the hopes that, if everyone ignores them, they'll get bored and go away. And if that person wants to actually RP later, well too bad. But this is based reactively on that one person's actions rather than proactively just saying because you are a certain shape, I won't interact with you at all. I do want to add, if anyone likes suspense and tension in their RP (lalafell or otherwise), I'd love to hang out. I just have an aversion to silliness atm. (I'm also totally laughing at the incongruity of me wanting dark rp while having a qiqirn icon. xDDD ) -
discussion Going Lalafell, distinct decline in RP?
ExAtomos replied to Lamiaris's topic in RP Discussion
Arg... that really sucks. While I certainly understand the reaction, I do wish that lalas wouldn't be painted with the same broad brush. I mean, what can I do to change attitudes? I RP Ralin with the same thoughtfulness I do all of my characters, but to not be given a chance? ._. (On my old server, I changed my gameplay main from midlander to lala for about half a year. Had someone, a friend at that, spam the disgust emote at me whenever he saw me from then on. I've had folks on Balmung talk about hurting or killing my lala alt and joke about how I can't possibly hurt them back. It's funny the first time, but gets old fast. I've definitely been on the receiving end of some lala hate. lol.) -
discussion Going Lalafell, distinct decline in RP?
ExAtomos replied to Lamiaris's topic in RP Discussion
Even amongst my friends, it took a while for them to take my lala character seriously. I just kept acting like a serious adult and they came around. I'll definitely RP with lalas, but will steer clear of those that play them as children or super silly mode just due to me not being keen on that style of RP (at that point, race doesn't matter). I do agree with Baby on this, perhaps many people do sexualize all RP interactions (whether they overtly say it or not) and thinking that way towards a race built like human toddlers squicks them out. I've often wondered though... are certain types of people drawn towards the different races? There's a striking difference between the crowd on my lalafell LS and the group on the Roe LS I'm on, for example. -
Official Pokemon Go! Screenshot Thread.
ExAtomos replied to Teadrinker's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Found myself running through my neighborhood last night trying to catch an eevee (which was on top of a gym by the cop station. I'm too low level to fight in gym matches, nor do I know how this works yet. ) Having a pokemon appear in front of me on a darkened street is actually pretty terrifying. Tried to catch a zubat last night that appeared at the end of my bed. Damn pokeball kept bouncing off my cat's butt. ><
