Given the info and questions I have as a potential mentee person, I'd like to tag Gospel as a potential mentor person to help with my lore/world questions, if that's cool.

Welcome aboard! I've been looking at your avatar as I get the feeling it's familiar from somewhere but I can't quite place it. So, here I am asking what it's from (and you know, welcoming you to this crazy place).

As it stands right now, Zarek (also being a new character) will live those five years out 'normally'. I'm not entirely sure how much or what the effects were on Ul'dah, but he'll have been in that area, fighting in the coliseum and doing work for the Platinum Mirage up until the point he splits away from them (still working to figure out what that will be and the consequences) as well as just about anything else he could do to try and make some gil. I'm purposely trying to leave it loose and open in case I need to account for some sort of other craziness post-giant dragon attack that hasn't been revealed as of yet. As a mini-plug (of sorts) if anyone else's characters are around and in taht area then, feel free to toss me a message.

One thing to remember despite the discussion is that there's definitely room for everyone along the spectrum. I mean, even Mr. Yoshida himself said that one thing he wanted ARR to offer was a chance for players to "Create a quality character that represents you, be it manly, cute, rugged, or sexy." Reference

Like a few others have already said, I tend to pick a date (I'm another that tends to go for my own birthday or something close/memorable) and stick with that, allowing the character to get older as I play them, though typically it has little actual effect on anything other than life outlook and such. Since Zarek wasn't a part of anything anywhere near the battle where people were time skipped (and I wasn't around then) his life and age will have progressed normally (at least as normal as can be in a post-firebombed Eorzea) during those five years.

To start, how you put it in the other thread WAS great to see. It made me grin a bit so props to you. For me, it was at least partly because it reminded me of an old friend's view and expression of her characters. On to the point, I've played characters on both end of the spectrum from a shining, almost OCD noble blood knight to a human mercenary that could care less how much blood and grime he was caked in as long as the job got done. To me, it really boils down to the environment of the world, but more importantly the character. How clean or unmarred a character is (or isn't) can be a small way of not only showing their priorities but how they view themselves, both of which can be (and usually are) effected by their history/background/standing/place in life, among other things. I like to look at it really as a small way of presenting that piece of the character, but by the same token I could just really be reading into other people's characters too far. I just know that for myself that's the reflection I intend to give off when I comment/post/describe something of that nature during RP. For what it's worth, Zarek will likely be more of a grittier, down to earth type character given the background that's been forming in my head.

Welcome to the forums from one new guy to another! Also, interesting intro/journal tidbit from your character's perspective as well. Here's hoping we'll get to see more about him and his journey either ingame or in more stories.

While I'm not much of a pirate, have a hearty "Yaaar!" and welcome from me as well. 8-) There are plenty of places to take in the lore lingering around here, so I wouldn't feel rushed with that at all. Everyone's seemed really patient & helpful with answering most questions from what I've seen so far!

Initially (as seen in my intro thread), I'd actually planned to go with a Highlander Hyur because I liked the look and planned to use the Ala Mhigo connection to go with the family backstory for the character. But, once I got ingame and played around, looked at some of the animations and then went back to the character creator, out popped a Midlander that I was really happy with. TLDR; Chalk it up to 'look and feel' this time around.

Yessss. Akihiko Yoshida is godly. That Marauder is the best thing ever. Thirded here on that. Though here's a rather newbie question: What does AF actually stand for? I've seen it around in more than a few places.

While I wouldn't say I want a full on mentor (and this could be the wrong place to post this), if there's someone who wouldn't mind fielding some questions about game world lore and possibly a bit of critiquing/sounding board for character building, that'd be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard! I have to say after lurking a while (and starting to post myself now) everyone's seemed really friendly to new rp'ers, returning folks, and people with RP experience. I'm sure you'll be just fine. 8-)

Yep, you can sit in chairs. I'd heard that before then got to test it myself this weekend.

As someone still really, really new to all this, feel free to of course, take my opinion with a grain of salt. I, personally, will be playing on Balmung with my friends (both old and the new ones I'm looking to make!) as a brand new non-legacy player. However, given past experiences in other MMOs, having the RP community split up (as strange as it may sound) isn't always a bad thing. Roleplayers/writers/people in general, can sometimes have (or get, once things like "popularity" and such get become involved) really, really huge egos. That can lead to dramawhoring, blacklisting, backbiting...you name it. So, while I really DO hope more than anything that everyone can settle somewhere and enjoy their gaming AND roleplay experiences to the fullest, if some people would rather separate it may not necessarily be bad. And that isn't to say the people wanting another server are ones with big egos, either. It's just that, much like in elementary school, not everyone does well playing in the same sandbox all at once.
