Rimashuma Posted March 2, 2015 Share #78 Posted March 2, 2015 America Online chatrooms. Right when AoL started charging a monthly fee for their services around the '96 timeframe. Played a were-wyvern at the age of twelve, not really knowing what was happening at the time but still going with it. Oh man, good times. After that, I moved to Ultima Online (Holy Hell I feel old) and on October 28, 2003, I made an Elvaan in Final Fantasy XI. He lasted a whole two days when I skipped school at a friends house and I made Rima. I had more fun than I ever thought I would being something so short, and he got vast amounts of RP during those many years of playing that. My WoW time came in 2007 after I got home from a deployment and nearly every single one of my friends had started playing it. I created a Blood Elf Paladin whom I roleplayed the next years until the release of FFXIV 1.0 All RP ceased to exist for me then in the world of gaming, and went to forums, which weren't bad, but I like to game, so my time was torn. Now I'm on Balmung, ready to meet people and build relations and RP! Link to comment

Arcian Posted March 2, 2015 Share #82 Posted March 2, 2015 I started in my friends' D&D 3.0 campaign when I was twelve, and moved to WoW the next year. I've gotten quite a lot of mileage out of Blizzard's jackassery, RP-wise (to the tune of almost a decade). As for the rest, I still RP in WoW and SWTOR, and am sticking my toes into GW2 for the sake of my friends. I've also done a lot of forum/Tumblr/DW/IM RP, so I like to think of myself as pretty versatile. Link to comment

Rimashuma Posted March 2, 2015 Share #84 Posted March 2, 2015 I forgot that my friend and I used to RP on paper, as well. He loved drawing, so he would draw us up some characters and we would both make up the story as we went. In combat, we'd use a system of pennies since we were kids and had no money for die. >.> Link to comment

Gegenji Posted March 2, 2015 Share #86 Posted March 2, 2015 My very first "RP" style experience was actually probably back in... third or fourth grade? In one of those after-school on-school-grounds day cares. There used to be one lady who work there that would tell us stories. About us, going on adventures. Every now and then, she'd turn to us and ask us what we'd do in the situation and she'd incorporate it into the story and it was really neat. That's basically all I remember of those times. That and playing Sonic Spinball on the Genesis they had there (dating myself, whee). After that, around fifth/sixth grade timeframe I somehow fell into a 2nd Edition DnD group and it just went from there. I stuck mainly to DnD, but online I participated in RP chat rooms on AOL (someone mentioned Red Dragon Inn and I'm pretty sure I went there for a bit). I played DnD on and off until around high school, when the group I played with more or less dissolved. I played FFXI and Everquest for a bit but, beyond my own headcanon for my characters, I didn't really RP. Same with WoW for all the years I played that. When I got out of the military, I played a bit of DnD via mIRC, found an actual, physical 3e DnD group to play with... which I splintered off from later to run my own 4e group... and a couple other odds and ends. FFXIV was my first real experience RPing in an MMO, and so I was horrendously nervous when I made Chachan. I still think I'm getting adjusted, but I also like to think I'm doing... okay. I'm too nervous to ask. Link to comment
Berrod Armstrong Posted March 2, 2015 Share #87 Posted March 2, 2015 I'm...actually pretty new to roleplay. I started playing World of Warcraft in earnest in about May 2010. I didn't know that roleplay was a thing until a couple weeks later when I saw a group on Proudmoore of all places doing it. I sat and watched for a bit, and got linked to an in character journal. It fascinated me, and got me thinking about how I could give my pixeldude (Nadagus, Human warrior!) a life, personality and story of his own. I began writing my own entries for him as I played the game. I did that whole 'quests are the character's story' thing, and I had a lot of fun with it. However, the group I had come across seemed very busy with PvE and only did roleplay once a month. I craved more than that. Google supplied me with two realms for frequent roleplay, Earthen Ring and Moonguard. I rolled another human warrior on Earthen Ring, named Earthenblade because why not? Not too long after I did that, however, someone recommended Moon Guard to me. And so I started afresh there with my human Paladin, Liucen. I got roleplay the moment I hit Stormwind and got so lost in it that it actually took me quite some time to get to max level. That was in...June, July 2010 I think. It only snowballed from there. I hopped over to Guild Wars Two when it released, and stayed there for a good while before going back to WoW. Eventually I left WoW for good, then went back to Guild Wars...and then came here! I still am babby roleplayer, but I like to think I own it. Dohoho! Link to comment

Alothia Posted March 2, 2015 Share #89 Posted March 2, 2015 Once upon a time, there was a game called Final Fantasy XIV. It wasn't well liked, and the people who were there were varied and enjoyed the game for what it was. In the real world, it was November. Someone who didn't think that they would ever want to play an MMO got sucked into this world of Eorzea and wanted to feel more a part of it. Throughout her journey, she met Rin Limley and Seraphine Winter. And through them, she learned about RP. What it was, how to do it. And she floundered. She had no clue. Her character, Alothia, had no personality at first. She was simply there. Fast forward five years into the future. The player has grown. The Character has grown. And here we are. Link to comment

Its like you skipped past the awkward roleplay puberty phase where you make a series of hilariously awful characters ( A fallen angel gets turned into a vampire and has both angel powers and vampire powers, but also is a master thief with a heart of gold! ) and jumped straight to making normal characters. How will we swap tales of ridiculous badness now? Link to comment

How will we swap tales of ridiculous badness now? The closest I got to that was making Liucen a closet paladin for NO REASON WHATSOEVER. Why did he keep it a secret? WHO KNEW? BUT IT WAS COOL TO HEAL PEOPLE IN SECRET. When it all got exposed it was like, "Oh he's a paladin no big deal" and I felt really stupid. I could argue that Berrod fits the puberty mold, being a recovered amnesiac MONK, but there's actually nothing wrong with that... Link to comment
Gegenji Posted March 2, 2015 Share #92 Posted March 2, 2015 My first DnD character was me as a Wizard. I also played such stellar characters as a Mini'd Mindflayer Paladin and a gluttonous child Mimic that shape-shifted into golems because they were totally objects, right? I also had my prerequisite Drow - a perfectionist male priest of Eillistrae that he only followed because she had enough balls to defy Lolth. And he ultimately ended up dual-wielding scythes. On the other hand, I also got to make the elderly scion of the family that created the Tarrasque (and had a mini-one as a pet, an ultimately unkillable little ball of muscle and sinew with 4 HP), a lawful evil kobold that ended up owning 3/4s of his adventuring party, and a summoner who drew the beasts he was calling forth in his sketchbook and effectively yanking them into existence. Raih Nelhah Posted March 2, 2015 Share #93 Posted March 2, 2015 I think I started maybe around 7-8 years ago? My first encounter with RP aside from playing silly scenarios in elementary school, was on some RP website that I forget the name of. Awful, cringe characters related to Naruto. I mainly used chatrooms for that and continued on places like realchat, and a place called TIJ (The Inuyasha Journey, I think?) Stuck with that about a year or two developing myself. The most fun part was moving from one-liners to eventually paragraphs as I 'fought' with people using define styles like T2, T$. Requirements to type out # word length of 'prepare,' 'action,' and then 'connection.' So maybe something like 7-5-7. It heavily favored people who typed fast so that paved the road for my typing skills too. From there I moved onto GaiaOnline as well, mostly Naruto (Path of the Shinobi, The Unknown Path, Village Rebellion) guilds since that tickled my fancy the most. Tried to get into other things but it quite wasn't there for me, especially since I preferred using anime pictures for my characters and wasn't a huge fan for realistic ones. It was like that for another few years until I eventually stopped RPing altogether until recently (FFXIV), playing other games that didn't really have any RP communities. I've always wanted to play D&D. Link to comment
LiveVoltage Posted March 2, 2015 Share #94 Posted March 2, 2015 Oh boy. Im probably the person with the least amount of RP expirience here. I roughly have around two years of RP expirience over a four year period. I first started RPing when I was a Sophomore in High School. It was a Halo RP using the Xbox live chat system. I did that for about 5 months before I stopped cause it got boring, but I would send at least 200-300 messages out a day. After that, I stopped RPing for around a year and a half till I was a Senior in High School. Came across the Neoseeker community and started to RP. Now, at the time, I didn't realize that the community was full of godmodders, drama and mary sues and all that bad stuff associated with RP. The community was physically falling apart and left after around four months there. Got into FFXIV then realized they had an unofficial roleplay server. Six months later, I really don't regret the decision for sticking around. The community here is great. Would not trade it for anything. Im actually looking to pick up a copy of Star Citizen when it releases on the PC and seeing if there will be RP there. If not then 360 space battles, weeeeeeeeeeeee. . . Link to comment
Dis Posted March 2, 2015 Share #95 Posted March 2, 2015 I originally started role-playing in the BeSeen chatrooms, specifically, one called the Sailor Moon Room. I was 11 or 12 at the time, and the post style wasn't about length or fluff, it was a speed-type RP. Fighting required you to be faster than everyone else, or post more quickly. From there, a number of us branched out to RP chatrooms on AIM, usually five or six of us, where we could add more detail to our posts and talk about things at length. After the Sailor Moon Room went down, I moved to HTML chatrooms, such as on Chatropolis, Webmaze, Pairs Palace, Chatlantis, etc. I primarily played in the White Wolf/World of Darkness rooms, though I did a brief stint in Gor as a Panther type character. Like Chris Ganale, I frequented Otaku Heaven, which is actually where he and I met. I've known him for years now, and we've ended up in a lot of role-play places together - GaiaOnline, the pokemon forum he referred to in his post. I've also role-played in a number of MMO's including Dark Ages, Ragnarok Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Rift, The Old Republic, Lord of the Rings Online, etc. For the most part, a lot of my role-play has been done inplaces like GaiaOnline. My RP career also includes (AD&D, D&D 3.0-3.5, Pathfinder, White Wolf/WoD), a lot of tabletop gaming. I never kept an 'exact' history of my role-play history, but it's pretty long and varied. I've also played, easily, a hundred or more characters over the course of my life, some for years at a time, some very briefly, and that's not even counting NPC's in my tabletop games that I'm the Dungeon Master for. Eva Posted March 3, 2015 Share #100 Posted March 3, 2015 I had my RP beginnings in a little-known text-based game called GemStone III (I believe it's still around now and called GS4) as a half-elvan empath. This was probably circa 1993-1994. I had Prodigy ISP back then and remember switching to AOL when it went free to play for awhile before they pulled it and began charging a monthly rate. I think games like that nowadays (or similar) are called MUD/MUSH but I don't really get into that scene. This is only a little amusing to me lately since Golden Saucer recently came out and everyone acronyms it 'GS' and even now some 20-someodd years later my mind still equates GS with GemStone. Link to comment
