Regarding the "rut" What I would add is to not focus too much on the technicalities at once and sort of evolve a character. This is just one way to create a character you can get into rather than a concept you can play. What comes first lore or character? - It does not really matter so long as you have an idea. It sounds like you are going down the lore start first. The important next bit is to consider what sort of stories would fit against that concept. This adds some dimensions to the character and as a result will then push you to check lore wise if they work. Go around that a few times and you will likely see some personality developing, hold onto this. After some time you end up with a character, that has a personality and a story(s). That should be enough to allow you to get into character and play this and develop rich interactions. This is the point to write a wiki I would say. Just to add though that in my experience it is only when you start to RP that things actually gel together. With just RPing a concept it tends to limit your RP to just that and can seem one dimensional and put you back in a rut. This is evident on people who play "the refugee", or "the blind girl", or "angry DK", or ... lots more.

discussion Can the twelve actually speak to men?

To hear the gods, first must you listen. For it is said those with fingers in their ears shall find only earwax. -
Not sure but Nebula would sure love to be taken on such a date

I just wanted to say that some of the events run are nothing like the mass gatherings, often many of them are a few people chatting and piloting in a bar. While not much may happen in the bar, they can be a good way to start a spin off adventure that you can come back and share the story later, maybe hang a trophy on the wall. I hope you find a nice FC. As for RP longevity there are some ancient fossils around , so don't feel so old.

The short answer: Come to Balmung You get there by transferring from another server (note: create 8 characters before you transfer as Balmung character creation is locked out 99% of the time)

Well, I would take on the inept side of all henchmen and lackies. Never have the master in play, just always be on a mission or errand for them. There are numerous references you could use, probably a few tropes. Some plots: Out shopping for some extra dark ingredients as a surprise banquette so that your Master may notice you Sent to spy on some other denizen (good for dungeon RP) Trying to purchase innocents in the markets of Ul'dah Organ dealing for your Master who is trying to build a Frankenstein thing Wanting to hire a group to steal something your Master wants Hire a clean up crew to clear out the dungeon that you Master wants to take over (now I have an image of an all Maid Dungeon crew) Selling off some dark items as your Master is running low on cash Maybe your Master has left and you are just going through the motions to keep up the illusion they are still active, because you know they will be back

So it sounds like we just play it vague. So long a you don't become your own Farther it should be fine. It also explains how those rapid pregnancies work, and why a watched pot never boils. With actual RP I could probably add up several years IC, and I do like characters to progress so I will go with a fuzzy age on things. Still that 101year spell will only take a few days now;)

New Year Clear Out! We now have over 50 spaces so come on in! After monitoring activity this year I have cleared out a lot of inactive characters. This is not an exact science so apologies if I made any mistakes. If anyone wants back in just drop me a line.

It will be worth the wait.

The EU scene is quite active with FCs, LS and discord groups. French wise I only know a couple of folks but then nationality is not something I check for that much. Language wise there are many where English is not their first language and so quite a bit of tolerance. From the UK I have no problem PvE and PvPing and even gave up any form of speed up service, just basic Internet. They fixed a lot of the lag problematic fights some time ago. For RP you wont ever notice things. I recently took a break and tried to get back into into BDO, SWTOR, WoW. I found them quite sparse, while in comparison Balmung is quite alive. If you are around past 9pm (UMT+1) then things do pick up as the NA crowed appears. But even in the EU day there are folks around from Europe. The only complaint I have heard is around Raiding, for that you will have to find an EU times group. [Edit] - Housing is all gone, so your only option there is to find FC and buy a room.

I. Basic Info Characters: Nebula Stardancer, Sumi Kha, Kanemaru no Ryuuji Primary character: Nebula Stardancer Linkshells: Hugs & Cake (owner, ooc) Witchs' Wyed Web (owner, IC) The Bard Rock Cafe (ooc) Primary RP linkshell: all of them II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Heavy, in that I prefer as much IC as possible and dislike ooc chatter getting in the way or even ooc discussion of what is happening IC or what your character would do if XYZ (unless there is a problem). My character is always 100% IC ready, in that I will have a reason they are where they are and wearing what they are wearing, occasionally I'll have to do a switch. I pick up quite a bit of random RP this way in the most unlikely places. I very much favor improvisation RP over directed or scripted RP Views on RP combat and injuries: I prefer to role play the combat without any rolls and see what the players' creativity brings out. But I am happy to accept rolls to determine outcome, provided we still get RP leeway to interpret that. As for injury and such, all is possible but I also accept that healing and resurrection exist in the game. If someone wants to play injured, amputated, even dead I have no problem with that as it is their choice.. and not a dice roll. The injury belongs to the player who's character is inured not the player who's character inflicts it. I wont accept PvP skill or character level as having any baring on IC activity. Views on IC romance: I am open to it and like relationships to be real, in that they are organic and built up over time. It has to be a substantial part of the characters' lives and therefore the players time, not just a token label. For that reason it needs ooc commitment too, and will take time to have a successful romance and RP partnership. If it happens it happens but it should not be forced. I especially love the will-they/wont-they periods and the sarcastic banter between a couple comfortable with each other. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): I have many many RP IC friends, and can easily flit around, while I may be strict with my own character I am more than happy to accept and fit in with most other styles. I tend to adjust to suit those I RP with even those on the edge of what may be RP. I also have no real boundaries of what I will or wont RP, so long as it is a sensible part of the characters and RP. With regard to Family, I tend to define my own family and am happy if someone wants to NPC one. However, I am wary of another character being part of the same family as they tend to not last the course and mess things up. Views on lore: I Role Play, not Lore Play. Basically, accept the lore but don't be a slave to it. I treat the lore as something to follow where it is specific or as a guide where it is vague. The lore only describes some of what is possible, not all that is possible, and so I tend to fill in the gaps creatively and accept that others will too. For me Lore should be in the background and not be used to meta-game, for example a character's knowledge should be based on what they know and involve mistakes and strange beliefs, many of which will contradict lore. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Quotes for "speaking" in character whatever the channel Brackets for ((OOC)) /say is always IC as it is public Linkshells etc.. as they are defined for use. But I tend to add a bracket ( just to be sure unless obviously ooc. III. Other Info Country:United Kingdom Timezone: GMT Contact info: Enjin, Discord Nebbs#5123

I'm loving the balanced views here, and have picked up quite a bit on the nuances of the echo in the game. So much so I'm probably going to use that as the reason behind some of my character's quirks. She has had them some years now but I never explained how, and left it open ended so they could be equally real or her just being a bit delusional.

balmung Returning player LF FC/LS/small consistent RP group
Nebbs replied to koukomo's topic in Chronicled Connections
This is a good time to look I think. There are many events going off for the valentine season, so you can probably get about and sample the FCs. If it is small and adults I can recommend the The Wayfarers, we have an event coming up Valentione's Day Singles Night BTW 30s is young you know -
Play what you want. However, for a more widely acceptable character avoid special powers and especially ones that encroach on another's RP sphere of control (such as their character), it will work out better in the end. So for the echo, I would avoid it and anything to do with the Warrior of Light. If you must have it then make it something internal rather than outwardly apparent. Oh, I suppose you should ask yourself would our character concept still work without the echo. If the answer is no, then you are probably playing the echo not the character.

Welcome young padawan... err... yes anyhow, you should like FFXIV and fit right in. Some things you may find in relation to SWTOR: FFXIV vs SWTOR Single character focus vs Multiple character support Sitting down, lying down, standing and many poses vs WTF is it with chairs! Head moves to tracks target vs Blank gazing Retainers are for storage/selling/gathering vs Companions gather and craft Your chocobo will come fight with you vs Your companions will come fight with you No choice in abilities (except PvP) vs Ability choices Linkshells = Channels Free Company = Guild Text based NPC no choice quest interaction vs Voiced interaction with choices nothing (except loyalty rewards) vs Account wide benefits pay for bound cosmetics vs Huge pay for stuff and sell it for in game credits flying in some areas vs no flying limited places you can fall vs fall of everything and die emoting = emoting Limited amount of housing and all gone vs You get more housing than you know what to do with RP events are similar, with a high portion of Bar based RP No PvP outside the PvP instances = Open world PvP One faction vs Two factions Though somewhat similar.

discussion When to SPEAK, when to THINK, and when to DESCRIBE
Nebbs replied to Kallera's topic in RP Discussion
I think you are correct for many folks, and a lot (like myself) come to this place from a more vocal approach to RP. Examples would be tabletop and live action role play, we probably think is pictures not words and may not be that into writing at all. So what we have is a mash-up of styles in a virtual melting pot. That is why, depending on your tolerances, some people you will get along with their style and others will piss you off. That does not mean any is good or bad. I suppose I'd add, do what feels right for you as there will be others with a similar approach. -
discussion When to SPEAK, when to THINK, and when to DESCRIBE
Nebbs replied to Kallera's topic in RP Discussion
Describe (emote) what you do not what you feel. Like others said you could add some emotional descriptor for effect. Internal dialogue is between you and your character, so think it yourself but don't expose it. Unless they want to speak it.. Deadweight slapped his right palm over his good eye and she shook his head slowly, "I can't believe I fell for that! The Captain will kill me." Also have you character speak, because no one knows unless they speak. Most people wont even think about others as they are focused on playing their character. The exception I would say is for comic effect, but keep that for light occasions. Deadweight considered the odds, and he found them incalculable for his tiny thuggish mind. So with a broad smile of hope he handed the sword to his would be victim so they could show him the right way to run a man through. -
Sure is and always room for a Sea Cat. So pull on up to the dock and cast ya line at any of the leaders for ye-old-invite.

In combat RP, do you take the difference between rolls into account?
Nebbs replied to sima's topic in RP Discussion
The problem with that would be people who don't PvP having a disadvantage or 1vs1 player imbalance between classes. Let alone you would have to then worry about levels which should never remove someone from any rp. I often roll when battling but I freeform as well if I know the character and what they can and can't do verse my own and if my character would stand a chance or not. As for me I prefer relying on role play and the players imagination, though each participant has to have some give and take in this. I often will loose, because selfishly the looser often gets the best RP, though it depends on the other player and how much power they role play. I will roll if they must, but often the outcome is odd, like the old lady beats up the knight... "live by the dice, die by the dice", and once you start using them it leads down the whole dice/character-sheet mechanics, which would cover the OP's gap in rolls as well as hundreds of other mechanics. Though the Fate-14 stuff looks like a nice compromise for a character sheet and I must try that. I will use PvP for effects and it is useful to create the visuals of an actual fight. But... one thing I absolutely don't subscribe to is that a players PvP skill equates to their character's skill. The same way a character's level is meaningless. The good thing is if you are willing to flex a little you can often find a common ground and get the good RP from the situation. After all we do this for RP not PvP via dice?
