  1. I usually have an overhead idea of how I want a story to go. If I find that a certain path will make things more interesting, I stop and assess for a bit. Character death is usually out of the question, unless the character was written to die (I...do that a lot. RIP Tom). I want my characters to be a part of the interesting story, and so I usually take careful steps to preserve their lives -- even if they get knocked around a little. Or a lot. I've often made the mistake of having my character do something that goes very much against his character to make things more engaging, but recently I've decided to let my characters be who they are, and make only minor tweaks to keep the train on the tracks -- even if there's a switch-turn or two. It's quite as much, if not more rewarding than a knee-jerk against-character decision. Of course, I wouldn't rule one out if it's absolutely needed. All in all, the answer is yes! I've taken the wheel and turned it a little at times to keep a good story going, especially when it comes to being inclusive of more friends so that everyone can have a good time!
  2. Berrod will seldom have any reason to wear anything other than musky black leather harnesses or his ceremonial cyclas. I'll probably get the stuff for collecting's sake, but my minimal interest in the gold saucer means I'll be using the cactpot for that. (I mean, I took the tour and explored and it's all really cool but I'd honestly rather spend my game time doing other things. Not a fan of mini games!)
  3. Sounds familiar. (Das Video) LOL. I actually like going around looking at NPCs to pull what I can in terms of speech from them. La Noscea has been PARTICULARLY educational for the performance of my Brawncanist, Rolf.
  4. "Get buggered, ye gods-damned piece o'shite! An' don't gimme that look! Was the same look yer mecky mother gave me when I swived 'er right in the arse. Left it bloody, I did, but she liked it anyway! Makes callin' ye a whoreson all the easier. Oh? Oho? Got some fight in ye after those words, aye? Come on then, let's see what y'got, ye bastard, I'll 'ave you suckin' on Thal's left ball soon enough!" ^ Would be how one of my characters do it.
  5. Go to your documents folder is -- or wherever your 'My Games' folder is. In my case, it's in my documents. Right click on the FFXIV: A realm reborn folder, hit properties, and uncheck the 'Read only' option. Select the follow-up option of 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolder and files', and hit ok. You should be fine after that.
  6. Not enough highlander nosebridge game -- but that's more or less how I picture him, except a bit bigger.
  7. Pretty sure he can't get on most of them :> Semantics. Seeing a lalafell in real life would terrify me to no real end. Sure they may be cute or whatever in game. But can you imagine something like that in real life? Holy hell, I'd probably shoot it.
  8. It depends, do you want an individual, or a group? If you're looking for an individual, I can help out with this guy, Burning Blood: http://40.media.tumblr.com/6b05160fea085f79f6bb9fe5f052dcff/tumblr_nj31ck15EK1robwlio1_1280.png[/img] He's a very polite and mannerly Hellsguard mercenary who enjoys conversation and giving bits of advice he finds helpful -- as is typical of most older gentleman. He's a peach! So clearly there must be something terribly wrong with him.
  9. I tend to go with things like. "He wanted revenge? I'm not surprised. We're only men, after all." "To err is typical of man." "To err is mortal." I try to avoid 'human and humanity' because I see 'human' referred to as 'mankind'. So I find a way not to use expressions like, "Oh, the humanity!" I wouldn't begrudge anyone for using human, though! I just avoid it to match with the game's flavor, just like I replace the word 'fuck' with 'swive' and 'bugger' as often as I can. I don't think using 'fuck' is wrong, but I just personally enjoy having my character speak like the NPCs!
  10. I find myself satisfied with enough in FFXIV (The gameplay, the visuals, the music, the story and the community) to make the choice to endure the difficulties and shortcomings they have with their servers. Yes, there are inconveniences and things that are not quite up to scratch, but it is my choice as a consumer to decide that I wish to consume the product anyway. No other consumer really has any real place telling me that I'm wasting my money, or that there's this, that or the other out there that is better. Just as they may feel entitled to their opinion, I'm quite entitled to disregard it. I'm informed enough, aware enough and individual enough to decide what is worth what to me. When any other consumer starts earning my money for me, then they can stand on that pedestal and dictate what's a waste of what. Otherwise, it's in pretty poor taste. I see they have issues. I see they plan to fix those issues. I am willing to wait and see, while enjoying everything that the rest of the product has to offer in the meantime. That includes both content and social interaction -- which is a big part of it! If it stops being worth it TO ME, then I will stop consuming. It's as simple as that. For anyone who is experiencing enough difficulty to make the product no longer worth it to them, do what you must, express whatever displeasure -- but gosh, don't be indignant and passive-aggressively unpleasant to those who find reason to enjoy it.
  11. ......soooo....the name was passed down... i am not sorry....not with you toting around that last name and that icon... Fun fact! When I made WoW Berrod Armstrong people kept making that joke and I didn't get it because I didn't know what FMA was. Someone told me and I ended up reading all the chapters because of it lol.
  12. HOLY HELL IT'S SO MUCH MORE THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. Shiiiiit, I need to stay away from this place, I'll get NOTHING DONE.
  13. With Berrod, I wanted to take a name from a character played in a previous game. In this case, my World of Warcraft human warrior. In WoW, Berrod Armstrong was an antagonist NPC meant to be cannon fodder in a long running story arc. Not only did I end up rolling, leveling and gearing him, but at the end of the story arc he was the only one of the antagonists left, having had a change of heart somewhere in the middle of the story. I grew quite fond of him, and when I looked through the races and clans for Final Fantasy, Hyur Highlanders appealed the most to me. The little lore blurb on Highlanders made me think immediately, "Hah, that's so Berrod." I decided to go with that name: Berrod Armstrong. The Highlander naming conventions included several nordic sounding names, but I saw that descriptive names such as 'Armstrong' and 'Steeljaw' were also fine. It was a very neat transition, especially with him being a Pugilist.
  14. I believe part of solving this problem lies in -not- heading to Ul'Dah. Stay in the other places, emote around, ask a couple friends to join, let it spread!
  15. Welp, there goes what little social life I had left. Along with anything slightly -resembling- productivity.
  16. Chi is probably the closest we get to martial classes using aether. Mudras are basically element-bending powers from Doma, calling upon the spirits of the elements to do stuff. Beyond that, there's nothing to confirm that other DoW classes use aether. One could make the argument that animations prove aether, or that they're simply flashy because video games. Abilities could be using aether reflexively, or a bit of martial polish and skill. Dragoons jumping could be aether-fueled, or could just be because dragoons have always jumped. There's plenty of room to argue for and against. I believe monks use aether as well -- in the monk job questline, Eric and Widargelt argue over what the 'chakras' are. Widargelt's thoughts were mostly in the side of spiritual mysticism while Eric was convinced that the chakras were simply related to aether. His version of the explanation of what opened chakras made it somewhat clear that there needed to be a lot of excess aether in the area. For more details on that stuff, check out the monk job quest stuff! It's actually pretty cool.
  17. WHAT. FULL BLOODED UL'DAHN? WHAT IS THAT. Is your character a glamored lalafell?! Berrod's gonna kick his ass -- DON'T DENY YOUR MOUNTAIN BLOOD, SIR. ROROROROROR. But anyway, I'm glad we're getting the nice NPC casual clothing, I've been wanting to dress Berrod in some sort of town clothes for AGES.
  18. I would really have loved to walk Berrod around in that bunny outfit. Quietly singing 'single ladies' behind my monitor...
  19. I think someone who's leveled MNK or DRG deserves to wear the Hussar's/Fistfighter's sets >.>
  20. I dunno, those Keeper names sound more African than Japanese to me...
  21. Eleni is one of those wonderful roleplayers that I would fling off a dungeon queue for when approached! Even if I wasn't IC, I'LL JUST LIE AND SAY I WAS, JUST TO ROLEPLAY WITH HER
  22. That second post though. Yet another reason to look forward to Heavensward's patches!
  23. And so Warren was doomed to have three children, all girls. Better, all of them will take after their mother and be blue-haired catgirls, just to spite Berrod. /hissssss
  24. *Sits here with his 8 characters on the server since before Christmas* ...ayep. I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!
