  1. Since others have started answering the other questions, I'll grab this technical one. Old links to our previous forum have been disabled and just go to the main page now. (We kept up access for a year to allow people to migrate stuff over that may not have gotten converted correctly). At this time, we've got two sections where people can post Linkshell/Free Company information, the "Hall" forums and in the Clubs sections. There are some basic filters for each to better help you find content by server!
  2. They happen on the same day, iirc. Given how we can expect SE to program, the entries are likely hardcoded per datacenter in the client scripts and I can't imagine them turning a feature like this on only to have to do major maintenance for it shortly after that isn't bug-related.
  3. EU RPers are mostly split between Balmung and Omega. I wouldn't transfer off of Balmung if you have a character there, but would recommend making an alt on Omega first, so you can get a better feeling for the sorts of platers on each. As far as I know, RP in FFXIV is still nothing like Argent Dawn in WoW. Cross-World visits aren't enabled yet. That feature will be getting enabled AFTER the North American data center reorganization in mid-late April. (So once Crystal DC is a thing). Once it is done though, you should be able to visit any world within that data center, although we don't know if congested worlds are going to be restricted or not.
  4. There's been a LOT of social media talk about this, but it likely boils down to a few things. 1. SE received a ton of feedback that players wanted a beastly race and they also wanted Viera. 2. Some high-up exec probably decided for them that adding "new races" was too much of a cost and that they wouldn't be doing that after 5.0. 3. Game development is absolute hell internally and these people will probably not be sleeping until after 5.0 releases. Based on the [Tokyo Fan Fest] Day 1 Media Interview with Yoshi-P , here are a couple of snipped answers. Q: Why were you so insistent on adding a beast-like race, the Hrothgar? A: The great thing about MMORPGs is that people from around the world with different values and tastes can all come together and play. FF games have good-looking men and women, but FFX is an example of a stronger look. Guin Saga may be a better example, but at any rate, since we're creating a fantasy, I want to shine a spotlight on that aspect as well. Even if we added another handsome race, it felt like the only real difference would be the ear shape. Back when we showed off a basic sketch of a wolfman, a lot of players around the world voiced their desire for a wolf race in 4.0. At our current patch rate, with that much equipment data being released, and adding a new race multiplying the amount of work required, we could probably only add one more race with our current workflow. We agonized over which race to add, and ended up with what you see now, and the lion T-shirt I'm wearing now *laughs* Q: When did you decide to implement the female-only Viera and male-only Hrothgar? A: It was during Return to Ivalice, around 3 months after 4.0. Viera was confirmed then, and Hrothgar came about at the same time when we were discussing plans with Matsuno-san. We were deciding whether to make a Hrothgar female or a Viera female, and after selecting Viera, work began right away, because otherwise we wouldn't make it in time. As mentioned before, the face parts are special and Hrothgar has big differences between its faces, like a lion face, wolf face, leopard face. It became a fixed model relatively recently. Viera was done right before Paris Fan Fest, and Hrothgar was done recently.
  5. They do have Mongolian influence! ....I know I talked about this before, but it's mostly lost to the the aether because it was over RPC chat and not in a thread. @Arashin Kujqai may remember some of the stuff I said and also runs a custom Xaela tribe iirc.
  6. Clan name-wise, that's mostly a Xaela thing, but even the official SE Forums post on naming conventions encourages players to have fun with it seeing how clans can come and go and we're only shown a handful in the Azim Steppe as it is. So if one doesn't suit your interests, I wouldn't sweat it. As for Raen, they don't really do clan names as much as surnames. And also have a pretty mutual cultural contribution to Doma/Hingashi society as well, which gives you access to that lore as well, if it's something you'd want to make use of. As usual, there are also always deviations and exceptions to all the rules for adventuring folk, those who may have moved into a city, or gone abroad. "I left X clan/tribe to see the world" is always an option if there's a tidbit you like, but don't want to necessarily impact your character in the present.
  7. Sounsyy's got a number of lore compilations for Au Ra as a race and the various cultures we see them a part of in-game. The most up to date index is over on tumblr http://mirkemenagerie.tumblr.com/post/167534982764/mirkemenagerie-update . If there's a specific question or questions, I can help to find some more detailed resources or see if the lore books have anything on it!
  8. I'd check out Lucky Sevens and Tepe's Treasures on Hyperion. Both actively RP and have some active members here on the RPC! I'm sure there are some more groups as well, but these are the two that I know of.
  9. Welcome back! Or, re-welcome to the game! Despite having been considered a congest server on and off (mostly on) since the datacenter move, Balmung does actually have a number of sprouts and returner flowers. I don't think you have anything to worry about on that regard. But even if that were the case, people leveling alt classes/jobs or the datacenter would provide through the duty finder to help you progress through everything! (And there're plenty of non-RP related players and free companies doing their thing on Balmung too. ...like the one I'm in, as an example.) Mateus is also hitting that point of locking on and off and we're not entirely sure if it'll get a formal congested status, but I also wouldn't rule it out. (Unless SE unlocks all the NA and EU servers once they get their datacenter reorganizations completed in April.
  10. Hello! Depending on the Looking for RP style post, the Making Connections forum is generally the best option. Unless it's for a Free Company or Linkshell, in which case our Free Company Hall and Linkshell Hall forums are better-suited for those needs. (We also have the Clubs section, which can create a little mini subcommunity portion of the RPC for your group with its own internal forums, blog, gallery, etc and some membership controls.) The Player Directory was created for people to post their OOC preferences/details although recently, I've noticed people are also using it as a stand-in for a wiki page. (Personally, I like using the wiki for a character details page because then you have have more interactive parts like character rumors left by other people!) If you need any assistance in developing your character or aren't sure how to make a particular plot or story work, then the Character Workshop forum is also a good place. This is more geared towards helping someone get a character going, but is also open for all. Or for a place for tumblr ask prompt/memes style threads, the Fun Prompts section is where I'd suggest putting those! The RPC site is pretty large and has a lot of sections that can allow the same sort of post, depending on how it's worded. If you're ever unsure if you've put your thread in the most appropriate section, don't hesitate to flag down an online moderate or report the thread, and the staff can help out.
  11. For the most part, classes are basically unrestricted, although as said in the previous post, the same class can exist in multiple locations. (And post 3.0, SE didn't want to do Class -> Job, so they only release jobs now. It's speculated they really want to phase out classes in total, as each expansion, the lines between them in terms of game mechanics get thinner). Like, if you wanted to be a conjurer from not-Gridania, you can! And Geomancers seem to fall in between like an Arcanist and an Astralogian, although Geomancy as a class/job isn't currently implemented in the game outside of some NPCs. (Geomancy is referenced and kinda fused into the 4.0 AST story, which leads me to believe we wouldn't get a separate job for it though.) It's also important to note to you can level multiple jobs/classes, although there's no longer any sort of requirement to do so post 4.0. (Another one of those battle system changes that's trying to phase out classes IMO). So assuming you have an outfit that can be equipped by different roles, there's nothing from stopping you from like, using a sword in combat, switching to an arcanist class in the city so you have a book, and then shifting to CUL to have a frying pan for some cooking RP or whatever.
  12. Nearly all of them, which makes it more difficult to get really in-depth unless you've got some particular questions. There was an excellent post someone had made on tumblr with general "what is the RP Difficulty of X job" which was a really good read. I'll see if I can find it to supplement the mostly short answers below. Jobs: PLD - One of the easiest. In this case, Paladins in FFXIV are trained in the same arts as the Sultansworn and we use a Sworn's soul crystal. However, the concept of a Free Paladin who has is not bound by duty to support the Ul'dahn throne is common enough. WAR - This job is currently undergoing revival by Curios Gorge, a Hellsguard Roegadyn. It's been shown other groups of people have other terms for the Inner Beast, as shown in the 4.0 quests. DRK - The job moreso chooses you afaik. Someone else would honestly need to provide better information because I haven't played it. WHM - Highly restricted. On top of requiring a soul crystal, all knowledge on White Magic has been effectively outlawed and is heavily guarded by the Elementals and their chosen representatives, the Padjals. It's a lost art as Amdapor fell during the War of Magi and the later flood of the 6th Umbral Era. White Magic was originally created as a response to heal the damaging effects of the Black Mages of Mhach. However, it was abused and weaponized. The Elementals aren't huge on letting that happen again, and the common knowledge is moreso "it's gone for a reason." SCH - In revival. The Scholar arts of Nym were also largely lost when the city fell in the 6th Umbral Era. (Thank your local Mhachi Black Mages for infecting them with a horrible disease turning them into tonberries.) In order to best maximize a Scholar's potential, they need a faerie, whose summonings are linked to their soul stones. AST - Legal in Sharlayan, considered too dangerous for other nations to learn. The form we learn is currently being taught anyways, as Leveva and her father and grandfather firmly believe that anyone should have a fair chance at using its power for good. MNK - Nearly recently was obliterated. Under revival and retraining. Its dissapearance was moreso because the former king of Ala Mhigo ordered all Monks to be killed for fear that they would rob him of his throne. Those who survived continued teaching it. DRG - Officially, Ishgard has a limited number of DRG soul crystals and the lore book placed a hard limit on that. However, a lower-case dragoon is also a stand-in term for a person who successfully helped them kill a dragon. NIN - Someone else will have to explain this. I don't recall any major restrictions in learning it aside from finding someone who will teach you. SAM - I don't know. Haven't unlocked. Probably the same as NIN BRD - Fell out of use. Not really being actively revived as of lv50 quests, but that may have changed. MCH - A new job. While guns existed before MCH was a thing, a MCH's gun functions differently than the mechanical ones that could be found in Limsa Lominsa or from the Garlean Empire. BLM - Considered illegal after the War of Magi caused the 6th Umbral Era. (Notice a pattern?) Highly destructive because it rips aether from the land to power its spells. Because nobody else really knows just how Shatotto figured it out, you need a Gem of Shatotto to not self-incinerate from casting this magic. There are a select few who still practice it, hoping to one day prove it can once again be used responsibly. SMN - Considered really hard to get into, partially under revival. Summoners were originally an Allagan thing and they largely stopped existing when the Allagan Empire fell. Also because they require the user to be bathed in the essence of a primal in order to summon it. Most people would either be killed or be tempered (which means they'd then HAVE to be killed). Prior to the battle at Silvertear Lake, it was largely assumed impossible for a primal to be summon in Eorzea. RDM - Magic created by fusing elements of White Magic and Black Magic. It was created by those who survived the War of Magi, pledging to never again use one of those magics irresponsibly. One could consider it accepting new students if you can find someone who knows it or has books on it. BLU - A newly named job. Soul stones were being sold on the cheap until the Yellowjackets shut that down. Not technically restricted if you have one though. Just, there's no legal responsibility that you won't get yourself injured or killed getting so close to monsters. EDIT: FOUND IT. Doesn't specify all jobs, but gives you a good idea of where they sat post 3.0, but before 4.0 content came out. http://kilieit.tumblr.com/post/159315531877/just-how-obscure-is-that-job-crystal-in-lore
  13. What you pick as an OOC class/job is really only gonna be there to determine which things you can equip for glamour purposes. Because we can hide/show our head pieces and weapons/tools, many people only set which equipment they want to show. It's also important to note that the classes and jobs available to player characters is by no means the single definitive version of that class or job. It's just the one we're offered in the game. Certain things like conjury skills for healing can be see all over the setting. We just happen to get to learn Gridanian Conjury. Many of the jobs are a bit more restrictive, but follow a similar feeling as they're primarily lost arts in recent study or revival.
  14. Known Issues: There's a popular template a lot of people were using that had broken HTML in it. While these previously rendered fine through some unholy magic, the new wiki software isn't as forgiving. If your wiki page seems to have suddenly stopped rendering things after a tab, it may be due to a broken tag. Affected Templates (that I've found): D'lyhhia's 3.0 Wiki Template fix: Add a </table> at the end of your Relationships tab before the </tab> field (Note: this doesn't fix everything, as there are multiple broken HTML tags. You'll need to close more to restore a full template). For a sample D'lyhhia 3.0 template that needed minimal changes to fix: https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/index.php?title=Maila_Khomiakov&amp;type=revision&amp;diff=329164&amp;oldid=328908 Kiri Template fix: There are a number of missing HTML tags at the end, to close the div borders and tables, in addition to missing div closes here and there. It's not as simple to add a quick fix like the template above. For a look of what changes are needed to correct this template, refer to the fixes I've applied to the template itself! (up to line ~440, as the rest is duplicated for the display sample) https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/index.php?title=Kiri_Template&amp;type=revision&amp;diff=331054&amp;oldid=246487
  15. This has finally been completed! I'm still working on a couple kinks here and there. You may notice the theme has slightly changed. I'm also working to restore the search function! (Caveat of using a powerful, but largely outdated/abandoned search engine plugin. Worst-case, I'll set this to the MediaWiki default [bad/temporary] or get us a new one up and running after some sleep!) This should be fixed. Please let me know if you encounter any bugs or errors! (really. I need to know so I can try to fix them. The wiki has detailed error messages turned on and a feedback post or PM with the details and if you can reproduce it and how are immensely useful!)
  16. Among the groups I see, I've heard some people saying they'd like t o improve what will be "Aether DC RP" as people don't want to have to choose between their raiding friends on servers like Gilgamesh and RP. I know of a few people I may not have a lot of contact with after the reorganization as they'll be on Aether (or will transfer to stay with a static) while I'm gonna be on Crystal because the FC I'm in has no plans to relocate for any reason. At the same time, my general expectation is that we'll see a lot of world visits between Balmung and Mateus as people can easily go to one or the other to access events or hang out with friends. Or we may see RPers buying houses on smaller population servers where housing's more available. (Which may not go over so well, but we'll see!)
  17. I'd check on Faerie, Hyperion, Jenova, and Siren. I know of RPers on each of those, although they're not going to have that sort of server-wide feeling like Balmung or Mateus. Currently, we're seeing similar closing on Mateus that Balmung had, where the active population's hitting soft lock thresholds. You might be able to squeeze a character on at an odd time of the day, or by paid transfer. (If you go the latter route, you can transfer up to 8 characters from one server to another, as long as they're all coming from the same place and going to the same place). Another thing to keep in mind is that the World Visit system will be getting turned on sometime in the next few months while we're still in the patch 4.5X series. There's a good chance we'll all get a server transfer opportunity, but otherwise, knowing which servers will be grouped up after the reorganization can probably help you find one you'd like as well. (In which case, you may like a server that will be able to visit Balmung and Mateus later.) (NOTE: typo was on SE's part)
  18. While you certainly can purposely not level a character, you'll be missing out on a lot of lore, story, and access to other areas as expansion content is locked behind the main scenario quests. If you aren't planning on reaching endgame/expansion stuff, then I'd say to start the game with a trial account as it lasts unlimited time, with some restrictions, such as no item trading, levels are capped at 30. (or 35. I can't remember). I'd say it's more the norm that RPers in FFXIV have a split between what their character does and what their OOC levels in things are, as you can level every class and job on a single character. There are many non-combat oriented RPers out there, but again, without leveling, you'll be effectively locking yourself to areas accessible only in A Real Reborn, as Heavensward and Stormblood require progression, as will the upcoming expansion, Shadowbringers.
  19. That unmanageably scary looking thread is actually more of a forum conversion bug! We used custom bbcode for titled spoilers back on our old MyBB site (2013-2017) which didn't take well to being forced to re-render for IPS which stores everything in HTML instead of processing bbcode every page/post load. You can find the unaltered lore index, or the more updated tumblr port managed by Sounsyy below. (The current plan's to move all to tumblr so we can safely shut down the MyBB security thread archive). https://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/mybb/showthread.php?tid=17897 http://mirkemenagerie.tumblr.com/post/167534982764/mirkemenagerie-update The general stuff should mostly apply. Don't metagame (use OOC knowledge ICly) and don't powergame/godmod. Remember that while your character is the main character of their story, they're not the main character of other characters' stories. Everyone wants to have agency and have fun. Other than that, FFXIV doesn't really do things like "server canon" if you're coming from other places that do. People's stories tend to be more self-contained or per FC/Linkshell. Some do, some don't. You'll find both types of players. You'll find some who stick to generic NPC "power level" and others who have Hydaelyn's Blessing and are RPing out the main scenerio quests. It's all about finding RPers who have similar tastes. However, this isn't a single sliding scale and RP interests may have many intersecting scales on lore, power level, violence, mature themes, etc. Use the RP status in game. Add a search info blurb at least stating RP or a little something about your character like an elevator pitch. Don't wait for people to approach you. (They might. But who wants to wait for that?) If approaching people outta nowhere isn't your style (it's not mine either tbh) I recommend sending a couple people some /tells asking if you can join in. There is a chance that it could get lost in text scroll if you're in a busy place. Or, you can poke people on the forums to set something up. (For me, a lot of my initial interactions with people I RPed in game first started out here on the RPC as IC forum threads. After getting those awkward introduction things out of the way, it made approaching in game easier for me! /anedote). Yes! The game refers to capital "P" Paladins (the job) as Free Paladins. They may have been educated in the same skills as the Sultansworn, but the protection of the Ul'dahn crown has nothing to do with them. Many of the jobs and classes we're shown in FFXIV are only a specific flavor of that class. In the cases of jobs, most tend to be on the exclusive, forbidden, or recently revived/created spectrum. That doesn't mean they're the only incarnation of that job or class though. Like, you can be a fist fighter without being a Pugilist. You can be a healer without being a Gridania-educated Conjurer. In terms of Ivalician roles, we don't know much currently. A lot of the aspects we've seen in game so far are dated city ruins buried in time. And there isn't a whole lot of lore on the current state of Dalmasca and their battle arts. (Since the Garleans would likely have tried to purge as much of that as possble.) In general, you'll probably get more mileage going for the generic than a name brand. FFXIV is somewhat notorious compared to other MMOs for being extremely anti-addon friendly. To the point that discussing unofficial third party addons can get you in trouble in game. (Mostly battle parser talk). There are some tools to help you break apart long text posts to fit into FFXIV's limited chat bar, if you tend to type in paragraphs. Like the two mentioned below. Otherwise, things like graphical mods, texture replacements, or things that read the game files/memory/network packets are a grey area of "SE won't ban you for using them, but they will ban you for talking about them in game or for griefing a player with information gained from them."
  20. This is an idea I've played around with in private, as it starts getting a liiiiitle too close to the lore stretch/bend/break thresholds for more casual RP scenarios. So. We have the things Valence mentioned above, and we also have working knowledge of aetherial teleportation as well. As in, we know a body can be broken down into aether and then reconstructed, almost always with the use of Aetherytes as a homing beacon of sorts to prevent a person from basically just dissipating back into the aether as if they were dead. Elaborating from there, it stands to reason that if you could obtain enough aether and some form of shaping it, some form of a body could probably be generated, as this is exactly what happens during a primal summoning. One would probably run the risk of creating something akin to a primal, however, which, we know are self-aware and can think, but are shaped in the image of their summoning with a never-ending thirst for aether. That last bit would probably be your bigger hurdle in my opinion. Or the being potentially just...using all of its/their aether to the point of no longer existing, as there's no form of anima or aether reserves to act as a life force.
  21. Hey there! To add a picture onto your wiki, you'll want to upload it first, as it doesn't support hotlinking. You can upload to the wiki by going to https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/pages/Special:Upload and adding your file. (I recommend marking "watch this page" so you can easily find them later!) From there, there are a few ways to reference your pictures. Method 1: Calling the file directly [[File:image_name_you_uploaded.png|thumbnail]] Method 2: Using the gallery wrapper (best for multiple pictures) <gallery> File:Example.jpg|Caption1 File:Example.jpg|Caption2 </gallery> Method 3: Using a template that already handles pictures Image_name.gif For more details on what you can do with images, check out the main MediaWiki page! We're not on their current release, but wiki features have largely stayed the same and they should all work! https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images
  22. When I was reading the changes, it basically boiled down to the same basic rules they already had. "Just don't be a dick." Just with probably waiting for less constant reports, or maybe if they notice it in the shout chat for a map like Balmung's Ul'dah, where things can get pretty stupidly heated out of nowhere. (And I'm sure this happens on other servers as well). Provided people aren't being outwardly malicious in some out of character fashion, I don't think there's going to be any sort of change.
  23. Correct, Au Ra wouldn't be in the trial. :< ...just the base race options, although you could possibly find a player on an open server to do some emotes for you for testing! The benchmark should have a few, but they'll mostly be the same scripted benchmark run throughs. I think a couple options for the voices will trigger some of the emotes.
  24. Raid videos on youtube (or twitch streams) would probably give you the best shot of seeing some battle animations. If you're just looking for -currently available- customizations, the stormblood benchmark may suit your needs! An updated one for 5.0 is expected to drop some time after the Tokyo Fan Fest in late March, but we don't know exactly when. It should feature Viera in it too! For the most part, animations between classes are all about the same, with more of the changes being emotes or for height difference. (See /pet on a lalafell vs /pet a hyur/elezen/roegadyn etc). A few change based on gender, like the battle weapon pose. If you're looking for more emote/animation testing before re-subbing, there's also trial accounts, which no longer have a time limit. (So they're good for say, character creator stuff beyond what the benchmarks could handle, but will lack gear and expansion content).
  25. Given that the game scripts are written concurrently between the 4 main global localizations, I find it hard to believe that this is the case. While the base script may have started in Japanese, the English localized by Koji and the rest of the team often adds more nuance and complexity to the setting, which then sometimes gets backported to the far more blunt and direct Japanese, French, and German locales. They're definitely referring to the planet that way purposely. (Or perhaps it's another one of those fun archaic terms that's fallen out of use and now sounds strange in English).
