The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales

This is just me whining, because it's a tiny little thing and I understand why it is a thing.

I am house-sitting this weekend, and I was trying to log into the game when this warning pops up that my account is currently restricted due to me trying to login on an unfamiliar wifi.

Again, I can understand why they do that, but it's just so annoying that I have to go in and change my password every time I go and play someplace else outside of my own wifi. :/

/whine

You really should get the one time password.

Edit:

Security tokens solve this issue, or so I'm told... but then you have other issues such as "what if I lose my token?"

This isn't really an issue. It's really PEBKAC. Make sure you save the emergency removal password they give you. If it dies, calling support during hours will give you the fix as long as you've done everything legit (name, DOB, etc)

^basically the above. Security tokens are GREAT if you travel around a lot. It'll let you keep the same password.

On the other hand, it can be very annoying if you're getting disconnected frequently. ...or format your phone. Or lose your phone, etc. Definitely save the emergency removal key. ...like, on your phone, in dropbox/google drive/email/printed on paper, etc.

Dear Group in Aurum Vale tonight,

When I tell you to target the Seedlings first, I mean the Seedlings first.  When I died a second time from having 8+ Stacks of Burr on me, and the healer couldn't rez because of running, because she didn't think Swiftcast was important enough, I decided I was done.

Regards,

The tank who dropped a group for the first time ever, and hates you all for it.

As I run The Arm of the Father--or A3, as it's known--for the eighth or ninth time attempting to get a token for the gloves, only to roll another number below 20, a curious thought fluttered its way through my head in the same way that a semi-truck going one hundred and twenty kilometres per hour with a severed brake line flutters through a traffic jammed freeway.

So, Square Enix. We--or rather, I--have been asking, for a while, for a token system for loot. The reason I've been asking because while RNG is rewarding on very rare occasions, most of the time all it does is reduce the experience to a tiresome slog wherein a player's efforts for playing the content is rewarded with absolutely none of the things they wanted, and more often than not things they can't even use. A token system wherein a token is a guaranteed reward at completion that can be used to purchase select pieces of loot depending on the content that is completed--like tomestones but less prevalent and more specialized--sounds lovely.

And you graciously listened. "We're implementing a token system," you said. And oh, though your information was vague I made the foolish assumption that you knew what you were doing. How I rejoiced. Oh, how I praised you. At last! A token system! No more suffering through RNG. The grind might be there, true, but at least that grind would have meaning! Players would be rewarded for the simple act of playing the game by receiving the things they wanted, or at the very least definite, unambiguous progress towards the things they wanted! All was well.

Not so.

Let's imagine the conversation that hypothetically took place between Developer A, who we'll assign the humble, wholesome name of Matthew for the sake of convenience, and Developer B, who we will also assign the name of Pissant for the sake of convenience.

Matthew: "The players would like a token system for loot because they're tired of RNG. Let's implement a token system."

Pissant: "Okay! Let's make the token an item where they'll have to roll for it!"

Matthew: "Erm...no, I was thinking it would be more of a guaranteed drop."

Pissant: "Okay, the token drop is guaranteed, as long as they have to roll for it!"

Matthew: "Okay, also, why don't we make it so all the classes can use the token so players don't have to grind for specific drops that may only be seen rarely?"

Pissant: "Okay! That way more players will have to roll for it and thus the chances of an individual player winning the drop will be reduced!"

Matthew: "No, didn't you hear me? The point of tokens is to remove the factor of RNG from loot so that the act of completing content feels more rewarding."

Pissant: "I hear you, and I agree! So when are we rolling out this system which only solves half of the issue of RNG loot and exacerbates the other half?"

Then Matthew begins to hide under his desk and contemplate his life choices and Pissant begins to sing "What A Wonderful World" off key.

As I enter The Burden of the Father again for the eleventh time, hoping for a chest piece token that I am unlikely to win, I perfectly understand that I don't really have any right to be miffed about this. First and foremost, Square Enix is a company, and as a company their main goal is profit, and with an MMO the main way to secure that profit is with these kinds of skinner box mechanics meant to drag out subscription fees for as long as possible. I get that. Really. I'm still here, playing the game and paying for it, so despite my bitching, Square Enix wins.

But really.

You couldn't have made the duty finder drops guaranteed?

You couldn't have given us that much?

I know and understand why you did it. Everyone would knock out what they needed on a single day in a week and then nobody would be playing the content. So yeah. Guaranteed drops for every member of the party are a pipe dream. Really, I get it.

But RNG. You just had to foist RNG upon us. Sure, you reduced the problem by removing the concept of individual drops, so players don't have to worry about even seeing the piece they want, let alone winning the roll for it. But then after taking that step forward you immediately took another step back by making the tokens useable by everyone but still making everyone roll and compete for it.

I am now on attempt #7 of Fist of the Father. Nevermind the other wings. I have yet to win the piece I would like.

And I know. I'm the one inflicting the grind on myself. I'm the one who feels compelled to do something that annoys me. I'm whining about nothing. I absolutely 100% acknowledge every single thing wrong with the point I'm trying to espouse.

But this is the goddamn vent thread and RNG is NOT the way to extend the relevance of content, because it makes me feel like shit.

So I finally got my Bismarck clear last night. I just need to bitch about how much I despise coordination fights. At least with PUGs anyway. I know I pretty much brought it on myself, but at the same time....just....awgh.

Worse than missing one's assignment, though, is the lack of commitment and conviction by some. Ragequits and vote abandons and blame-gaming...just, knuckle down, pick up and give it another swing. Everyone wiped...and because you wanna be a little fussbudget, now everyone has to wait for another try. Because you lack the freaking mettle to eat a loss and move forward again.

Failure. Is. An. Option.

You bitches.

(not anyone here, mind, just in general....y'know)

Tam-Tara so boring our healer rage quit when he saw it.

Leveling experience on second class complete garbage at 50+

I got a Tam-Tara run of 50s and over. >.>

The healer demanded big pulls which mean the paladin pulled big but as I am now leveling BLM, I was eating a lot of mob hits with Fire II. Not that anyone died, but yeah. Healer so bored we pulled ~5 packs each time.

This is more of a story that happened to one of my friends who happens to be a new player.

This happened a few days ago while he was running Tam-Tara Deepcrofts and was tanking. There was a Conjurer in his party who refused to cast anything but stone. No heals, nothing, just stone. Despite the party asking the conjurer to heal...still casted nothing but stone. It got to the point where the rest of the party were spending all their time trying to keep my friend alive using their own cross classed cure ability. It was ridiculous but we all had a good laugh about it in Team Speak.

I dunno if this is my own fault for not riding the DRK hype train and cruising DRG and MCH to 50. I dunno if this is my own fault for getting absorbed in the 3.0 story instead of leveling or just being late.

But don't you just hate it when you're trying to level a decent DPS class to 60 but then NO ONE runs the lower level dungeons anymore?

I do.

Like the game or the community just wants you to stay as a below level 26 something.

I mean fuck leveling LNC and being a decent DPS amirite?

Not that MCH is bad, it's just very RNG reliant and carries a stigma which automatically gets you BOOTED regardless of whether or not it's DV or Sohm Al or lower. But hey fuck that too.

Fuck being versatile so you can help more people as a DPS and TANK rather than just a TANK.

Like if it takes dumping my 600k into a group of people to dungeon run me to 51. I'll do it. I'll be broker than dirt if that's what it takes.

I've had a friend help me with leves of late so I've been skirting to 30 before I fate grind my life away, however I have to agree with you that there's an absolute DIRTH of people doing the old content. It makes sense mind, everyone is going after Alexander right now and if they're not doing that they're fate grinding the newer classes or gearing up to i170. There are still some people who are new to the game and -need- those dungeons, but with content more spread out it's harder to get the ones you want to pop when you need them. If you ever need someone to help the queue pop faster drop me a line, alright?

Speaking of low level dungeons and leveling, dear tank who decided to start a Tam Tara run wearing a mixture of THM gear and the Snow outfit... Why? Just... Why? That was one of the most painful dungeon runs I've had in a long time, and the first in months I willingly put up with the punishment timer to drop when it became clear you had no interest in tanking due to the skills you were using, or rather not using. :dodgy:

Also... Dear ME, I really should not do dungeons while talking to someone in skype. x___x

Dont worry, DRK is getting a stigma too because half of them suck ass because it's just people playing them because omg edgy cool cloud strife stuffs.

Yesterday I almost got booted outta Fractal because the party said "You die one time and im kicking you, dork knight. Sick of all the bad DRK tanks."

I mean when I didn't die once and we cleared I got an apology but still.

I don't know if I mentioned it specifically in this thread, but I had something similar with Judge while I was leveling him. I had just unlocked Dusk Vigil and went in to get the Air Current quest squared away (and possible some loot). First thing I get is mouth from the DRG who is in the party - "Oh great, a DRK. Hope u know how to play."

It was the start of a "wonderful" experience. Which included such things as:

- Said DRG ordering me to put on Grit (which was already on) and then being all condescending when I told him it was. "Oh, there u go" and "yeah sure" comments aplenty.

- DRG patronizingly explaining the fights to me since I was the "new player," and giving the same "yeah sure"s when I pointed out that - while the character was new to the dungeon - I was not, having brought two other characters to 60.

- He then pulled the entire hallway past the first boss, got us all killed (My first experience trying to use Living Death - it didn't go well). And his response to that was "gotta use ur cooldowns, bud."

- Getting miffed at me when I went ahead and pulled the second boss while he was still in the middle of "explaining" the fight to me. And, when I (albeit snidely at this point) stated the mechanics of the last fight to prove I didn't need his "explanations," his response was "oh, u watched a vid. good for u."

Votekicked his ass so quickly. The rest of the group dissolved, thinking the run was ruined... but I got replacements and we breezed through the last third of it without any issues or smarmy comments from a DRG that was in sore need of an attitude adjustment.

I like being told how to Off-Tank A4 (incorrectly btw) by a guy whose only Lv60 class is MCH and only other level 50 job was DRG. This very same man who thought he could eat 3 orbs back to back because "OT wasn't getting them fast enough" or that it was the healer's fault that he kept dying to Magitek Bit's lazer beams because whenever he got targeted he liked to run around and stack on the nearest person so that he always ate at least 2 hits.

I had some smug satisfaction yesterday when I went into A3 and got a Warrior who said I was going the MT, so I should put on VIT accessories. He then complained about not knowing why people do that. I pointed out that I'd MTed the fight plenty of times as a STRadin, and he then stated that if I was going to come in I "should at least have all i180s."

I proceeded to main tank the fight, help kill the adds, and we won after a single wipe where the DPS had died to other things that were not related to my tanking. I kinda wanted to say something to him, rub it in a bit. Ultimately didn't, rolled crappy on the drops and had to go again. Fortunately, the next run I got my drop and Chachan now has his i190 gloves to go with his i190 boots and two (STR) i190 accessories.

LMFAO! That happened to me in Bismarck HM. Several people suddenly stopped dpsing because they wanted to see what'd happen if the island hit 0.

The tales of assholery aimed at DRKs is the primary reason why I'm leveling it solely through fates. Only going to 50 anyway. I'm not that good a tank to begin with (no matter what my friends would tell you) so I don't need the added bullshit of A.) a tank class I'm not familiar with B.) snide assholes on top of it.

The tale of that shit-talking DRG, though. Man, I have to say that every time I come read one of these tales about DRGs being fuckheads or epic failures is one hell of an ego stroke. I'm by no means remotely close to server best DRG (in fact barely rating myself above 'Server Competent' DRG), but I'm not a brain donor and I have the good sense to keep my fucking mouth shut because I am a lowly dps and I am immediately replaceable.
