I'm pretty sure that eorzeans curses as much as we do IRL, now are there some "official" idioms ? And how do your characters swear ?

The only big one is "Thal's Balls" that I know of, though I've been using "Twelves-be-damned" a couple times as well in writing (along with one case of "Halone's icy tits"). I'm sure the basic curse words still apply in Eorzea too - perhaps with a minor twist like "shite" - mostly due to there not being anything in place to keep them from existing.

 

If there's other, more Eorzean, curses, it'd be neat to know. Chachan most likely would never use them, being the little goody-goody he is, but there's plenty of NPCs I wouldn't mind be able to throw out an appropriate curse now and then.

Usually I just use whichever god I can pick (Thal, Nophica, Rhalgr, etc) smack it up with a few cuss words and move on. Combinations are endless, really. Inbred Chocobo, By Nophicas tits, By thals balls, etc etc.

I actually like going around looking at NPCs to pull what I can in terms of speech from them. La Noscea has been PARTICULARLY educational for the performance of my Brawncanist, Rolf.

Also on the terms of swearing, I think there's a rumor somewhere about a crow from a crow and that crow might have been something of Jin'li... does that count? mwahahaha

Here's one likely many of you have not seen: "swive". It was said by a White Rams NPC in Dragonhead. It means "fuck". "Shite" is also used a lot by many NPCs.

This thread makes me feel happy and warm inside because I was totally a sailor in a fantasy novel in a past life. 

 

Personally, I seem to like comparing things to a 'goobbue's arse' in various ways and contexts. Somehow, some way, that's ended up my de facto 'curse' across all my alts. I don't even know.

My character doesn't swear often since he's fairly well spoken. If he did, though, I'd go with what can be encountered in-game already rather than a lot of the 'modern' stuff that some people swing with.

 

The likes of 'Fuck', 'slut', 'gay' and 'retard' just feel very out of place to me. There's other words that are used by actual NPC's that have the exact same meaning without making a scene feel like I'm interacting with a modern day chav.

 

On a side note, I'm British myself and I've noticed that a lot of role-players like to add what they think is 'British' slang to their character's vocabulary. My advice? If someone who is actually from England can't understand what your character is saying then chances are most other people struggle as well. Might be a good idea to tone stuff down a bit unless it's intentional!

Seeing as how the la noscean rogues guild seems to draw heavily from Matsell's "Rogues Lexicon", the majority of the slang is actually from 19th century New York...

 

The curse words were plentiful, but nothing like what we consider swearing now. For anyone who wants an education in criminal speech, I recommend looking up that work.

 

When Darcey swears, he does so in rogue speech, although when speaking normally, you wouldn't know he was a rogue. He has patterned his speech after the highborn folks he serves food to as a waiter and cook.
