  1. Yeah, it's not stuff about what RP characters do that I want (also I believe that the Balmung Bulletin Board explicitly says that it's OOC knowledge and should not be taken IC). Rumors in general are not "personal", unless the subject is someone the vast majority of the area would know (a rumor about me could be spread in my neighborhood, but certainly not in the whole town, for example). To make it more clear, here is two rumors that I'm looking forward to post if this feature is added to the site: Mostly heard from people in and from Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa: "There seem to have been several cases of disappearance and kidnappings among the homeless and refugees of late." "It appears that a sort of serial killer is around. All the victims involved seemed to dabble in black marketing and slave trading. The authorities believe these murders might be at hand of beastmen or other slave traders, as the slaves are always taken from their dead keepers." As you can see, it does not involve my characters at a first glance, but it's something my characters could hear and talk about (both rumors are related to a side-plot of mine), and I'd like to see other people acknowledge this and perhaps talk about it, too. Of course, the RPers are also welcome to not believe the rumors ("I've never seen this happening, personally"), but the rumors will be ICly persisting, giving themselves a form of believability. If I want the rumors I posted to stop, I will have to post: "There have been no longer cases of dead black marketeers or disappeared refugees of late." So until I do that, my previous rumors should be taken as still on-going, without me needing to post them repeatedly to remind people. Although this may be done in the case that a specific black merchant or a certain refugee camp in particular have been struck. I hope this gives an idea.
  2. Character Fear? Physical contact, invasion of personal space. How do they cope? Jet'a always keeps a safe distance from others (and what better job than Black Mage to do that?), as well as an appearance and behavior meant to intimidate and discourage people from trying to be intimate/confidential with him. How do people respond to their fear? He doesn't explicitly inform others of his fear, but so far he has done a good job at keeping others way. His icemancy did the rest for those that still insisted and tried to approach him more than he was comfortable with. Do you think one day they could be cured of there fear? Probably not, or maybe in a distant future only for very few individuals (like, one or two at most), definitely not on a global level.
  3. I echo this sentiment as well. When Eternal Bond came out, there was a burst of RP couples suddenly marrying left and right. I get it, it's new, it's cool, you want that chocobo as soon as possible but... do it OOC then. Or make it a set-up marriage. Romantic weddings are still pretty modern and take a lot of time together and much consideration. Set up weddings were quicker, because it was set up by your parents and very often with someone you hardly knew, so in that case it's justified. But I've yet to see a set up wedding happening on XIV RP. It's mostly romantic weddings, and those, to me, should take a good amount of time to be settled. Like, years, possibly. EDIT: Possibly the most serious pet peeve I have in this, and the one I'm most afraid to share.... I really wish there was less discrimination towards us MSQ RPers. I never mention MSQ or being a WoL when in open RP, and yet I've had people walk away from me soon as they OOCly knew I'm in a MSQ RP LS. I just don't get it. It's as if I avoided ERPers in normal conversation roleplay. Just because they do ERP, doesn't mean they can't have normal RP with me. Likewise, just because I RP MSQ, doesn't mean I can't open RP without talking about the MSQ. But I guess people just don't want to take the effort to try and find out... On a related note, I wish there were more MSQ RPers. There's still too few of them.
  4. Jet'a is pretty xenophobic. He is worried not only that they are going to impact the economy and steal all the work, but that they also might bring forth a new primal, so close do they resemble beastmen in his mind.
  5. UPDATE EDIT: The Rumors in the Air Thread is a thing! Post your rumors there, and post your questions here! Hello all, So I've been looking around the site to see where I could post a specific rumor. I have been wondering how people handle rumors, and this is what I've found: - Rumors in wiki pages, related to specific characters. - Lantern pages, written newspaper articles. Now, I like both of these, but I think they are both a bit insufficient in helping an IC rumor spread. The wiki pages contain rumors specific to certain people, and they're also rarely checked unless you already met that character IC. The Lantern is good, but I assume it'd be hard for IC illiterate people to acknowledge what it says, and the articles are usually based on well proven facts. It's rare that journalists only write about "rumors" (unless it's legeds), BUT, sometimes, rumors can lead a journalist to investigate one and maybe turn it into an article later. So I was thinking it might be a good idea to make a Rumors Directory thread, where we can post stuff that we think should be acknowledged by people around a certain area: beastmen attacks, a new serial killer in town, a music band growing famous among the teenagers, you name it. It's not only a good way to lure attention to certain facts that you have been roleplaying, but also a way to ICly promote events, too ("The ABC Manor's wench has finally found a bachelor! People in the Goblet are already talking about an upcoming engagement party!"). It doesn't have to be speficic to a character (it usually shouldn't be speficic to a character, unless you think it's someone most of the city/area would know), and perhaps it's best to avoid writing stuff that will commonly frowned upon to be ICly acknowledged, such as things related to major NPCs, or an in-game accessible area getting wiped by a nuke and so on. I think it doesn't need its own category, but a single thread under "Roleplay" (maybe in IC Square, or under Lantern) would be good.
  6. The tradition of only virgins wearing white on their wedding day is very antiquated, and almost all brides wear white on their wedding in the US, virgin or not. Not only is it a cultural thing for us 'Muricans, but a good chunk of people here probably are not even aware of the traditional reason for the white dress, and those who are often find the entire line of thinking behind it to be old-fashioned and misogynistic. I think there's plenty good reason for people to choose not to follow the "only virgins in white" rule in their role-play. Wow, no reason to call me that just because in my country this is still a Big Deal. Different cultures, you know? I admitted to be nitpicking in the first place, since I am aware in the US it's a disregarded rule. But fine, I'll be mysoginistic if that suits you.
  7. Yeah this is 100% not a thing here (USA) with the wedding dresses. Everyone marries in white, even if it's their 5th wedding. I've never heard of anyone suggesting otherwise. Also, how would you know if the bride is a virgin? That thing about TMI? Yeah, people tend to let me know about their genitalia career without even me asking... or if they don't, their friends do. I can't tell other RPers what to not share, unfortunately x_x
  8. People being physical in /em instead of /p or other means of RP channels. I'm not interested in reading your smooching, lipbanging, and so on and so forth... People being unrealistically open and giving out way TMI to me when we're still not even friends. I try to treat my RP conversations as I would IRL, and certain topics I don't touch with people I have just met and that I don't consider even a friend yet. I'd like to see some more formal behavior around, or hell, even distrust. There is an awful lack of distrusting people. But then again, there kicks in the "Being extrovert is the only way to find RP!" argument. *shrug* What else, hmmm..... Oh yeah, out-of-place equipment. Swimsuits in Coerthas, weddings dresses in... well... not-weddings. And worst of all, wedding dresses when attending someone else's wedding. It's rude to look as pretty/prettier than the spouse, peeps! (EDIT: Also, non-virgin spouses marrying in a white dress. An american friend told me it's not too uncommon there, but here in Italy it's considered of Very Bad taste, as the white dress is the symbol of purity and chastity. A VIP recently married in white even though she already had two kids, the news went on complaining about it for a month. But this can be considered nitpicky on my part.)
  9. Sorry for the necro, I guess? I wasn't sure if I should start a new thread of funny videos or if I should search for threads to not create clones soooo... I went with the latter. Anyhow, enjoy this pearl of Buzzfeed!
  10. Nitpicky Space! The NPC by the Aetheryte in the lv1 Coming to X quest explains that we are not really dead when we lose a battle. Rather, we are on the brink of death, but our aether instead of returning to the Lifestream as per all living things Returns (HAH, get it? Return) to the aetheryte we are most attuned with (Home Point) and takes back the form of our physical body, much like we do when we cast Return IC without being incapacitated. Our body "remembers" where to return and escapes the grasp of death into the Lifestream thanks to our capacity to attune to aetherytes. We are immortals! No, jokes aside, we shouldn't RP it as immortality, but this is how it works In-Game. Me, I prefer to say someone found me consciousless and brought me back in town and left me at the aetheryte under care of the guards. ON TOPIC: I have mentioned age and career time in my first post on this thread as the things I look at the most to determine how powerful a character is versus mine, but another came to mind: gear, type of weapon and context. To make it short, if a Machinist comes up to me in Costa del Sol and shoots me while I'm in a swimsuit, and my character is notoriously shitty at dodging (most of them are), then yeah... I won't kill my character, but I'll at the very least send the machinist a tell and warn them that this will cause a serious wound on my character and that they will have to accept the consequences of it, which range from them having to find a way to save me (or if they don't, I can have NPCs do it, it's fine), to get a bounty on their head and be wanted in the area (in that case, he shouldn't so happily stroll in Limsa Lominsa. If I catch him do it IC, he will have to deal with being chased down by the guards/possibly arrested) and so on, or to be hunted down by my other adventuring friends seeking revenge, etc. etc. In short, if a character has all the context to overpower me, I will accept that, but they'll find out that there's consequences to be dealt with, and often times I find that a lot of B/A RPers don't want to deal with them. Which is kinda...sad. I do have one Badass character, Jet'a, and he has had consequences to deal with his actions. The results? He's now permanently limping (he needs his staff to walk), and in one of our most recent roleplays his leg injury caused him and another person to fall down a pitch and not being able to climb back out (they had to be rescued, which was humiliating for Jet'a, but what could he do?). Not only that, but during the fall he also got an injury on his chest that during the time at the bottom of the crevasse (a few days) turned into a Very Bad infection and nearly killed him. You can be badass and still be mortal, is all I'm saying. And as many have stated out, flaws are often the source of the most meaningful RPs.
  11. Aand it's settled...! Meet Dayan Dotharl (Dayan being a male mongolian name meaning "Enemy", how fitting!). Age... late twenties/early thirties, still deciding on that.
  12. I also want to specify (since I see you're giving font colors to specify it for each character) that Yesui has currently no connection with the Hotgo tribe. Her parents brought her in the woods as the Dotharl attacked and promised they'd come back to find her, but they never did and she couldn't find the way back to her tribe. For the past couple years she has been living within a small Raen village on top of a mountain, and is currently in Mor Dhona with the other Raen refugees. She does know she is a Hotgo, but she was not told what happened to the Hotgo tribe (if the elders of her village did know, they didn't tell her), and is still waiting for someone from her tribe to come and find her to bring her home. Or well, was till she got to Eorzea. Now she is stubbornly determined to go back to Doma to still wait for her tribe, but of course, she has no means to get back there. As for the male, I am open for Dotharl connections with him. I don't know any player RPing a Dotharl yet though. EDIT: Also for those who like me seem unable to be happy with anything the Random Name Generator has to offer, here's the site I used for Yesui's name: http://heraldry.sca.org/names/mongolian_names_marta.html
  13. Excuse me for the double post, but I feel like repeating a question I asked back on page 6 that was so far ignored, since I am pretty interested in others' opinions of the matter: On the topic of the grand company gear though, does it mean that people will scowl if I use an alt that claims to be Ishgardian even though he isn't past 2.55 and as such has no access to Ishgard? Food for thought. This being because I have two characters that are Ishgardian (well, one is Coerthan to be exact...) but they're both um... still lv47, and pretty far from gaining access to Ishgard (many thanks, Yoshi-P). Should I refrain from RPing them at all until their progress is sufficient for them to be around Ishgard?
  14. Thanks so much for this directory! It'll be very helpful. In about 7 hours or so I should have allowance to use name change (did you know you can change only 1 name a day?) for the Dhotarl male. I'll let you know what it'll be!
  15. So, has someone may have noticed, Yoshi-P has a bit of a passion for "experiments" and discontinuity when it comes to Jobs and Classes in this game. Put the classes, add the jobs, put two jobs on one class, put jobs without classes... and so on. So I thought, what else could happen?! Here's some brainstorming I have made. NOTE: This is a thread purely based on satirical/humorous brainstorming. It's not a complaint thread, or a rant thread. Please take the jokes for what they are: jokes. ---------------------------------------------------------- New classes! Agent: For Male players only. Lady Luck: For Female players only. OR The following new classes will be added: Brass Blade Requirement: Must have started the game as Gladiator, Pugilist, or Thaumaturge Wood Wailer Requirement: Must have started the game as Archer, Conjurer, or Lancer Yellow Jacket Requirement: Must have started the game as Arcanist or Marauder OR Twelve new classes were added. Only one quest will be available per player, and it will change based on their Nameday Guardian of choice. To accompany this patch, Nameday Guardian of choice will no longer be changeable through the use of Fantasia. OR The following new Job Quests were added: So you want to be a Crystal Brave* So you want to be a Sultansworn* *This quest will be unavailable after certain events take place in 2.55 Main Scenario Quests OR The Musketeer Class was added: Requirements: Must have started the game as Marauder or Arcanist Must have Llymlaen as Nameday Guardian Must belong to one of the following clans: Seekers of the Sun, Plainfolk, Sea Wolves, or Midlander. OR A new race was added: Padjal* *The Padjal Race will not be selectable through the use of Fantasia Players who wish to play a Padjal will have to start the game as Conjurer Padjali Players may not venture outside of Gridanian regions, nor join any other guild. Padjali Players will have access to WHM quests without the requirement of lv15 Arcanist. And these are the ones I thought of. Bring on the discontinuity!
  16. Cause horses rocks! I'd totally be a Goro if I was a Xaela IRL >_> *shoos chocobos*
  17. Yesui Hotgo, 10yo. She was left in the outskirts of a forest just as the Hotgo tribe was being slain by the Dotharl, with the promise from her parents that they'd come and find her when the tribe would be safe again. Except they didn't. After some wandering, she stumbled on a small, isolated Raen village that rather reluctantly took her in. Raised at the local temple, she is still today bullied and frowned upon by the Raen children and adults alike, who see her as a violent, indisciplined child that is only waiting to turn into a dangerous and aggressive Xaela warrioress. For these reasons the child has grown to become very introvert and snappy towards adults and other children alike. In the wake of the purge, Yesui was forced with the rest of the village to board one of the many ships that abandoned Doma before its destruction. She is now a refugee in Revenant's Toll along with the rest of her village.
  18. Haha, very interesting! ^^ I'll add them both of it's okay. Just hopping by to say that one of my Xaela has officially received her new name. "Yesui Hotgo" is looking for a Xaela group linkshell! ICly she is 10yo so be ready for lots of trouble, stubborn antics, and awkward questions.
  19. Damn that Bloodshore, someone should hang a sign or something! Blue also washed up there at the beginning of ARR back in 2013! Blade's still living with the consequences of being the one to find her, so beware.
  20. Ouch, now this is something I hadn't realized of the community. I never hear anyone talk about me... but maybe that's because in two years I have barely RPd with anyone on these boards. I suppose shyness/introversion has its advantages sometimes. Though, I'll admit, I like to complain talk about people with my close friends a lot, usually about PUGs, or people that irritate me in general. I do it as a way to vent and steam off quickly so to avoid holding grudges in the future, and I know that I'm doing it with people that will keep the stuff I say between ourselves and not spread it causing unnecessary drama. I don't agree with "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all", but more with "If you have something not nice to say, say it in a way that will not hurt anyone". Holding stuff in ends up boiling under your skin and make things worse, on my experience. BUT! Before you start flaming me, no, I haven't spoken "trash" about anyone here because, again, in these two years I haven't known more than a handful of people, and that handful has been pretty nice and also pretty short interactions that really couldn't cause any complaint on my part. Which is a big compliment, cause us Italians tend to find stuff to complain about easily. I should probably work as a trade unionist!
  21. That 0 Botanist though, that's unforgivable. He's certainly not a god amongst the Greatloam Growery. EDIT: On the topic of the grand company gear though, does it mean that people will scowl if I use an alt that claims to be Ishgardian even though he isn't past 2.55 and as such has no access to Ishgard? Food for thought.
  22. I find IC age and career time to be a major factor in determining a character's skills. Like, I'm fine if you want to be this young, beautiful wizard lady, but I don't care how talented you are, I will not accept your character to be stronger than my old grumpy sorcerer who has been practicing the dark arts for twice the years she has. For physical classes I suppose it can be a double edged sword. Sure, the old veteran is more skilled and expert, but a young ruthless fighter will have stamina and vigor on his side. Magic class is definitely about mental skills though, and as such the older should make you the better mage of the two (provided that you have been studying magic for most of your life, or anyways more years than the younger mage has). That's like standard protocol in all fantasy stuff.
  23. By non-issue, I meant that it doesn't happen on the ordinary. After spending almost two years here and seeing zero situations where whatsoever discrimination regarding sexual orientation was seen either IC or OOC, I think I can safely say that these things though they can happen, because if there's ying there will always be yang somewhere are not ordinary, and do not require hiding/closing away from others/isolating/etc. I'm sorry that puts me as a narrow-minded and naive person, harmful and dismissive (which, wow, is way worse of a collection of adjectives that I feel I have been sharing with others in this discussion), but my concept of ordinary is clearly different from yours. Either way, my thoughts have run their course on the topic, so I shall leave the thread now before I get more of that simply for trying to encourage some more open-mindedness and equality in a world that, as far as I have seen, is already open-minded and supportive of equality all year round. Looking forward to seeing you guys RP around.
  24. I echo this sentiment. As I've previously stated, as a altaholic I RP all kinds of flavors, that range from personality, to battle classes played, to social statuses, and yes, to sexual orientation to. As of the current account, I've RPd a lesbian (she died at the beginning of the year), a gay, an asexual, and even an homophobic. I cannot find that good thread of RP advice about OOC bleed that was made last year, but one good advice it held there, was to avoid making characters that are too close to how we are IRL. It is a very good magnet for drama that only long-time veteran roleplayers would know how to avoid. Especially if you are new to RP, my advice is to start from something that is to the other side of the spectrum compared to your real self. Though of course, it has to be a character you like, so I guess that if you dislike straight characters, then you're stuck with LGBT-only characters. But so far of the many LGBT RPers I've met, only one hated straight characters, so it's a rare occurrence. Again, RL qualities, traits, statuses, whatchamacallit should not raise fences in what you can RP and who you can RP with. The moment you try to make it a Focus, people will start to worry. I think what lures drama in LGBT LSs is that they are self-labeled LGBT LSs, catering to a certain sexual orientation, so people go there thinking the focus is sex. If I made a Left-handed LS or a Vegan LS or a Feminist LS (yes, being gay or vegan or feminist to me is the same as being left-handed, it's just a part of you, not a key factor or your soul essence), people would come to them thinking the activities and talk to be had in them would be focused on those labels. After all, you don't go to the Tennis Club to play soccer or talk about comic books. And as for the need to stand out until there is absolute acceptance from every single man on Earth, I'd like to repeat a post that I've shared about feminism in a old thesis I made back years ago (yes, I'm a woman and I'm against feminists, shocker!). There cannot be absolute equality for as long as we have something different. To be perfectly equal, we would need to look something like this: Should Vegans feel discriminated for as long as there is any carnivore animal on Earth? I hate to do things that may make people dislike me, and I've had to go through therapy before to accept that there will always be someone who doesn't like me. It's true, people with different sexual orientations are still on the beginning when it comes to conforming and being accepted by the majority, but I'd like to think that this is not the case for this RP server. There may be someone out there who dislikes them still, either OOCly, or in my case, ICly (just one character. He's extremely traditionalist and disapproves any interracial, interclan, or non-straight relationships.). But it's the part of the variety of the human species, and I believe that discrimination is definitely not a problem on Balmung. Hell, in some cases, there is an issue of lack thereof of discrimination (Duskwight fellows, preach it). So yes, join a LGBT LS if you want to have chatter/activities catered on that. But if you're looking for one (addressing people in general, not the OP as I know he made a LS now) as a shield against abuse or discrimination OOC, know that this is a non-issue, as many have already stated.
