Gegenji Posted December 8, 2014 Share #176 Posted December 8, 2014 Oh jeez, there was an actual thread for this? Well, at least I didn't make my hidden message of "I done updated mine!" too blatant. ... but yeah, I just updated mine today a bit. Bit of a history update and, mainly, adding in the good batch of people Chachan's met so far. Oh, and I threw in some TV Tropes for that section because... it was there. Added his birthday/namesday/welcometoeorzeasday. Since I've been taking screenshots here and there of some RPs, I might try and re-integrate the gallery from the original template and put a few there. Maybe do as I mentioned in that other thread and troll the other templates to try and bolster my horrendously weak wiki-fu. "Ugh I need to update my character's Wiki" is an apt thread name indeed. Cliodhna Eoghan Posted December 8, 2014 Share #177 Posted December 8, 2014 I don't even wanna look at my wiki right now. The last update I did was to change around some songs on the track listing. >.> One day I will tie myself to the chair, take away the controller for the game and make it proper...one day. Merri Posted December 9, 2014 Share #184 Posted December 9, 2014 I only ever rarely makes minor tweaks to Merri's. Most of the time it's removing information, as opposed to adding it. I prefer to keep his strictly to minor things that anyone could know. There's maybe one or two things that are more OOC knowledge for other people's sake, but 99% of Merri is locked up in my head and/or on my PC. I much prefer people find out about Merri's background and history in-character. I feel like it makes reactions a bit more genuine and interesting when the player themselves are learning new things about your character alongside their own character~ Link to comment

PerkPrincess Posted December 9, 2014 Share #187 Posted December 9, 2014 I will gladly update anyone's wiki for them if they want me to. Whether or not any of the updates will have anything to do with their character or the actual events they've gone through is an entirely different matter. Part of me wants to volunteer and see what happens. The other part of me is displaying a strong force of peer pressure by chanting DO IT DO IT DO IT. Also yes I'm forever guilty of NEVER GETTING AROUND TO UPDATING. This also includes attempts to network with the community. Link to comment

Aaron Posted December 9, 2014 Share #192 Posted December 9, 2014 I update mine whenever headphones and a computer are right in front of me. Then again, I tend to not do anything unless I have music. I work with headphones in, eat with headphones in, I even drive with headphones in. YES I KNOW CARS HAVE RADIOS GUYS GOSH. I don't know, think I may be addicted. People have started saying literally at work "The day he stops listening to music is the day he gets fired." See me sliding down the hall listening to smooth criminal and working at 100mph There I go. . . Talking again >_> *backs away slowly* Link to comment

Guy Tower Posted December 10, 2014 Share #194 Posted December 10, 2014 I have barely ever wrote down anything about my characters, certainly never making any wiki pages on them, but seeing this topic I wonder whether or not I should. This leads me to a question - why are you taking up the task? For yourselves, so you can always read up on your characters and avoid getting lost/confusing one with another (sort of a database)? For others, so they can do so? For others but actually for yourself, so you can show off, "look at me, I am such a big role playa"? Little bit of any of the above, or for something else? I am wondering whether people are doing their character's wiki pages to put their cyber stories on paper, line them up and arrange so they, the players, can easily check them up and find what they need, or is it just plain haughtiness. Me, If I ever do it, it will be a little against me. I always thought, and still do, that other people's characters should get to know one another in-game, that such "meta-RP" is as unfair as, say, graphic novels and books on World of Warcraft - they add to the lore, but irritate those who do not have the time/means to read them. If I'll decide to make wiki pages on my chars, it will be because of its usefulness as a database and a little, tiny bit of vanity, so often found between us role players. P.S. I will have no shame and ask you to check out my "Character's biography - Alpha version" post. Continue being as helpful as you were before, and tell me if everything's alright with the story or does it have any particular holes/inconsistencies. I've already found one . P.S2. A little of all of it, actually! I use it to keep track of some of my characters' bare facts, habits, relationships, tendencies and history. I also enjoy watching the rumors section grow, and love adding to the rumor sections of others! It's also there for people who want to make connections and craft stories with me -- some of the stuff on there is meta bait, but I haven't had anyone come up to me using more than rumors. In the event that someone tries to meta-game me, I'll very quickly call them out on it and request that they discontinue. It's overall a really fun project, making sure your character has a little slice of the internet, a little fact page/bio/reference that you or others can pull up, read and enjoy. Link to comment

I am wondering whether people are doing their character's wiki pages to put their cyber stories on paper, line them up and arrange so they, the players, can easily check them up and find what they need, or is it just plain haughtiness. I personally post it as a chronicle of prior events and a small primer should people seek her out for like-minded interactions. To that point, I do try to keep things reasonably vague with regards to current events, as I also believe that most stories should be further told in-game. Still, Steel's past and how it's shaped her today, I feel, is important to list. Also, I just like to write about my character and enjoy fleshing her out, even if she never really gets to interact with other people's stories....so if I find myself further unenfolded I at least have an outlet for RP in my own head-canon. If people enjoy what they read, then all the better. I hope people like what they see...hence why I should do a style re-visit to make the thing more eye-pleasing and perhaps a bit less clinical feeling. Also, I am a total sheep and have just edited in a "Player Rumors" section, and will likely be watching that spot like a sort of owl-eyed creeper. So, to that point, some self-vilification is certainly at play. Link to comment

Ye gods, the "tongue" emote on this forum looks very, very derpy! Thoughtful questions. I initially made my page because player rumors are the BEST thing ever and everyone should have a comment card like that provides the folks I frequently found myself RPing with had one, too, and I am a sheep! My reasoning beyond "me too!" was that I was RPing Warren (and still do, kinda) in a public fashion; He would be somewhat "known" to the RP world and I wanted to give people the option to have an inkling of the character beyond first encounters. I made it a point to keep my wiki very, very general when discussing Warren. As such, there's virtually no backstory in it at all. It's just the sorts of things I imagine would be obvious upon watching him from a distance, hearing about him or something similar. Finally, it's a little like adding your own baseball card to the collection, you know? Link to comment

Gegenji Posted December 10, 2014 Share #199 Posted December 10, 2014 I mostly made Chachan's page because... well, I could. It's a lot like the whole trading card deal that Warren said, but there's also that nice feeling of looking at the finished product and saying "Yup, that's my character. I did that." Even just adding little tidbits that give passing mention to what the character has done, the relationships they've made... it helps really drive home that this character is out there doing things. Meeting people. Plus, it's a nice reference point for both yourself and anyone who wants to know about your character. Could there be meta-data the other player could use? Possibly, but hopefully most players I would like to play with will avoid using knowledge they shouldn't have. Plus, I don't think knowing a few bullet points about major events in a character's life really ruins the experience of actually meeting the character. It's like reading about... I dunno, Weird Al, let's say... and running across the guy at a Starbucks and hitting it off. It's not exactly like that, of course - since it's you reading about the person and not your own character - but I feel the comparison applies considering you are meeting the character as much as your own character is.
