"I've always wanted to meet you!"
Flickering Ember replied to Warren Castille's topic in RP Discussion
Verad : Tiergan's told me a little bit about his character and he sounds like he is a blast to play with. Aya : I don't really know much about her character but I relate to many of her posts. She seems like a cool person! FreelanceWizard/L'yhta/Mysterium : Kind, knowledgeable, creative. I like reading Wizard's posts about his/her character. They're always really in depth. Plus, Mysterium sounds really interesting. It's too bad Ember doesn't know very much about magic and can often be intimidated by it. Coatleque Crofte: I've only RPed with her once but she's such an intriguing character. Faye and Val: I met Faye and Val once at a HoD party. I enjoyed the brief moment we got to RP and would love to meet up with them again. Sastra: Another really cool person from the forums. I've RPed with her FC a few times and really enjoyed myself. I think I've only RPed with her one or two times. They're also a lot of cool folks here I've already gotten to RP with a few/several times and am happy I have gotten the chance to. I hope to continue RPing with you awesome folks. -
I was really disappointed to read that they were thinking of making stockier Au Ra females but decided not to because roegadyn and highlander females aren't popular. Though, I always suspected this was going to be the case. I was expecting the females of the new race to be super pretty, especially since this is an Asian mmo. (Though not their extreme height difference, that surprised me) I don't know if I would call highlanders 'muscular' personally. I would say 'toned' and 'physically in shape.' She looks like she works out or plays a sport. But she doesn't look like a female weight lifter or body builder. I'm not even sure I would call it a "warrior's build." I find it worrying purely on the basis of "They just look healthy...so what?" Highlander and roegadyn females are "muscular women lite."

Here is the quote again. No where in there do they say verbatim "There's only one WHM." There is a lot of room for interpretation. Here's my interpretation, for example: "For story purposes, you are the only one who knows white magic. Outside of that main white mage story, there are other possible ways to become a white mage that already exist. We just haven't created them/written them/put them into lore yet." "There's only one WHM" could be a possible interpretation but it is still an interpretation and not necessarily anymore right than anyone else's.
-
Quoted from the Fanfest lore panel. They haven't told us what those are yet, nor if anyone has ever been successful (Which I'm assuming not because they said there's only one WHM). Until they do that's moot because people can just invent a bunch of stuff and be completely wrong. Just like we know Blue Mage is a FF class but we have no idea if it will ever appear in FFXIV. So some people don't think you should play it at all because you'll get the lore wrong, but people were trying anyway.. only later to learn that the devs said BLU probably won't even be IN THE GAME Well, I was originally responding to your post that said it wasn't up for interpretation. But I figure there is a lot to be able to interpret. All we were given as descriptions for the playable races were a couple of paragraphs and some naming conventions. RPers are constantly filling in the gaps of the lore. Half of the miqo'te lore on this website is based on educated guesses and speculation. We don't know anything at all about Au Ra but people are still creating them. We know very little about Doma except that is an Asian parallel but people still RP them. If we could only RP exactly what is confirmed to exist in the lore, there wouldn't be a lot to RP. My character is a roegadyn but I don't know anything about their culture or their customs or their physiology. If you cannot rp anything not in the lore then I suppose no one could rp a tribal miqo'te not in the U tribe. I only remember seeing the U tribe. Lore could say that certain tribes died off long ago. Etc. It seems to me it is easy to pick and choose what is okay and not okay. I suppose it has something to do with power or presumed snowflakiness. But is a White Mage really any more powerful than a paladin or a summoner? They're all epic. RPers agree and disagree constantly. Lore is always being debated in rp communities. Everyone has a different viewpoint, different tolerances, different things they like, different interpretations...aren't these threads proof of that?

I agree, and the inverse of this is what I've never understood. Why -must- you have the title if having it means all sorts of lore diceyness? I look at it like this; you wouldn't try to break the lore and game rules at a tabletop session, so why here? The lore sets a consistency for all interactions, otherwise we might as well play Second Life. I think wanting to call your character 'white mage' has nothing to do with wanting to be special or strong or important or different. I think it has everything to do with the fact that it is a series staple and people have always been roleplaying what their classes are ever since I started RPing in MMOs. At end game level, you are not a conjurer, you are a white mage. You don't run around without a soulstone because that would gimp you. I think tabletop is an excellent example here so I will run with it, but to make the opposite point. In tabletop, unless you're house ruling, what is on your character sheet is what your character is. Roleplayers often will roll say, a rogue, not just because they want to play as one because they want to RP it too. Certain folks, not me, don't prefer to divorce game mechanics from their RP. I know this is not the majority of RPers but it is absolutely the playstyle that would RP as a white mage. There is no right or wrong way. RPing a white mage isn't lore-breaking, it's just a different interpretation on the lore. For example, my interpretation of the lore differs in that I view the game as very literal minded. Frontlines, primal extremes, housing, dye and glamour system....FFXIV has an explanation for all the game mechanics. The lore reason for Frontlines has to be the most ridiculous stretch for pvp I have come across but there it is in the lore, technically. In this same style of storytelling, it makes sense that there would be hundreds of Warriors of Light running around. No one's really mentioned the fact that it was said in a lore questionnaire that even though there is only one White Mage taught by the Elementals, there are other ways to become a White Mage. I believe then that it is canon that there are actually a bunch of White Mages running around. From the game's point of view, I think it's meant that YOU are always the person who did the story and the rest are your allies and friends who had their own unique, but powerful adventurers. (Some may say that isn't very RP friendly and that is fine. You can choose to ignore that. But if others want to RP it....it's just a different style of RP. I choose to ignore anything regarding Frontlines because I think the lore behind it is insane) I realize that it's an unpopular opinion but I wanted to speak up for the other side on this. There are always different perspectives and RP styles that you may not know about or understand. You can speculate a person's reasoning for wanting to RP something but you can't know it for sure.

I've heard of this number too, but after seeing the cutscene from where the "information" is pulled from, I'm really skeptical. There is no indisputable evidence that says Ascians are completely off limits due to there being a limited number of them. I believe it is more likely that they have a hierarchy, like Hyrist mentioned. That is still speculation as well but that's the way of it with the lore of this game it seems. A great deal of it is just speculation from the RPers' point of view. Outside of the number, they seem like standard villain faire for a fantasy world, to me. Not something conceivable for the person RPing a farmer refugree from Thanalan but if you roleplay as a fantasy hero I don't see it as anymore out of reach than many of the other magical and mysterious stories that often take place.

What scares you away from a FC/Guild?
Flickering Ember replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
As an FC leader I can honestly say the use of a website is for organization purposes. Especially if it's a bigger FC. There's only so much we can cram in the message of the day and being on a site means we can put a calender up for people to check for future events. Sadly you'll be a bit out of luck for a lot of places to join since this is a rather common requirement. Also with Sastra on keeping an eye on this since it's something I might use When it comes to joining a group...Hmmm. Not many things will make me shy away. A big thing might be favoritism towards a member or certain members, especially if its someone who is messing up and not answering for it. It's a requirement that quite frankly, in my opinion needs to go away. I'm all for having to check the website for updates, events etc. Just don't want to have to sign up to apply:) I am the opposite. If a guild doesn't have an active guild website then that will turn me away from a guild fast. While it's not always the case, guild applications can go hand and hand into promoting web activity in addition to other benefits. (Such as being able to know who is applying!) I like the community feel of the websites and enjoy checking for posts while at work. It's the same reason I am on this website. It's one I've thought about as an individual willing to run a guild, but it's ultimately too strict for me to ever put into use. My reasoning is that I like the environment a guild website creates. I feel it promotes activity, getting to know each other, getting to know each other's characters and it's just fun. But if I ever end up leading a guild again I know there are other ways to encourage website activity without requiring it. -
I don't know. Ember not only dislikes the cold but she is outright fearful of it. I can't see her willingly going to Ishgard unless it was an extreme situation. I'm expecting her to hang out at the beach while you all freeze to death.

I will preorder a game if I trust the company and brand. But honestly, since I mostly just play MMO's and role-play, I don't really buy that many video games anymore. And I actually preorder games much much less than when I buy them regularly. If the company and brand break my trust, then I stop pre-ordering.

Some non dainty hairstyles for female roes. Looks like everyone who wants a dainty female is not getting their fix with roe so....more tomboy haircuts please.
-
I figured the real reason was that not enough people played the more muscular females and looks like I was right. As always, I am disappointed in people.

I'm interested for one of my alts.

1. Your character gets judged! What stereotype do other students see them as? (Nerd, jock, etc.) If she is in a public school, one of the special ed students. Though, she would probably be more likely to be enlisted into a specialized school. Regardless, she is probably the teacher's pet who can't pay attention in class but is still liked because she is just so darn affectionate. Occasionally, er often, the teachers get irritated by her distracting antics, but they still end up making it into the yearbook anyway. 2. Your character gets an A+! What class(es)? 3. Your character fails a class. Boo! Which one(s)? Ember would be the one with a learning disability. She's the teacher's pet but that doesn't mean she gets A's in an instant. They know that she tries super hard at all her studies but she just keeps failing. They probably have to comfort her and hire her special tutors. If she's in a specialized school, which she most likely is, she might pass a physical education class or an art class, but even these she may struggle at--mostly because she has trouble listening. 4. What sorts of people gather to your character? Are they popular or a loner? In a public school, Ember sticks up for the other special ed students. If there is a mentoring program, the students outside of special ed might be really nice to her. And while she's not popular, she's probably a least well known by the rest of school. In a specialized school, Ember is the the sweetheart kid whom teachers love but is not necessarily popular. She is outgoing with the other students but she ends up making more acquaintances than friends. And many of them are probably wary of her. In short, she likes the rest of the students more than they like her. 5. Your character goes to future career counseling! What is their ideal job!? Agriculture! So she can raise her own food!

Characters' Aether Aspect to a Certain Element?
Flickering Ember replied to Knight Kat's topic in RP Discussion
Aren't the Elementals pure aether? I kinda figure aether is element based unless that aether is sourced from people or animals. But I agree, this is one of those grey areas that I find believable enough to work with. (Being able to see aether without those weird devices seems a little grey as well) -
More females than males? Well, the census would disagree with you and that is based on actual statistics. That is for the whole server of course, not just the RPer community. Still, all evidence we have on this is completely anecdotal and not indicative of how things actually are. I do believe I am usually in more scenes with more female characters so if the RP community really is dominated by women (doubt it) then *shrug*. Usually it's the other way around so if there is an imbalance I don't mind it. It's pretty sad if we think the norm is 'a number of male characters with a small smattering of female characters.' My point is, you're rarely going to have an exact ratio of genders in RP scenes. In this sense, RP is more like RL. Unlike the movies and tv shows, there is never a perfectly corporate selected ratio of 3 guys and 2 gals to a scene. Sometimes I'm in all female groups. Sometimes I am the only female in a group. The genders of the characters I would like to think don't matter, only the quality of the character.
-
I suppose I don't think about it since I am never level 1 for long. I realize there are multiple classes per character but I just don't think about it. I don't enjoy saying I am X class in RP because....well...I don't really think fantasy based classes are realistic or versatile enough for my tastes. It is about how my character carries herself rather than what she is skilled at. It doesn't matter if she is holding a spear or a dagger, she is going to go kill with it. She is based off of wild animals and ancient humans so think someone who fights with instinct. So I guess you can count me as one of the ones who doesn't think about levels and classes. I think about fighting styles first. Particularly because I am not Rping while leveling so there is no one to rp my character's advancement with.

The problem is half the people there are afking just to hold their spot for their return after work/school. They need to fix the afk logout. I find this highly rude to other players who have yet to even get in to see the place. This. When they made the change that allowed for AFK players to stay logged in, I thought it was a baffling idea. And to be honest, it feels like one of the worst decisions overall in the game. I don't know of any other game that lets you stay logged in like FFXIV does and as expected, it is very easily abused. I support the idea of them reverting that change, even if people can find workarounds. Your average player doesn't know the workaround so.

What about bard bores you? Are the numbers not high/fast enough? Do you not like the animations? Is it the rotation? For me personally, rotation is most important. If it is for you too, you may want to stay away from BLM since it is pretty much just Fire spam AFAIK.

Scum and Villainy (LS Interest Check)
Flickering Ember replied to 111's topic in Chronicled Connections
What does this mean? Other people will be able to kill my character at their discretion, or that I would have the decision to allow my character to be killed? I feel like the latter would go without saying. It means that you would be willing to consider permadeath for your character. There is something strange about the RP community that permanent death needs to be specified. As opposed to all those non-permanent types of death. Anyway, It's also why I suggest alts. This would be more for smugglers, thieves, bandits, mercenaries, drug dealers, assassins, etc etc. Not really like epic hi tier magical craziness. Any room for weird cultists with a bit of sanity slippage who are prone to stalking and kidnapping for the advancement of said cult? Or slave hunter. Still not finalized on the character. -
Scum and Villainy (LS Interest Check)
Flickering Ember replied to 111's topic in Chronicled Connections
I'm interested as I have an upcoming alt that, while I don't really consider 'evil' per say (or a criminal for that matter) definitely dips far into 'villain' territory. However, considering I haven't even started RPing with her yet, I can definitely say I'm not interested in permadeath. At least not initially. -
I wasn't expecting the option to name my chocobo either. When I realized that I needed to think up a name, I denied the quest and ran around for a day or two, seriously thinking it over. I came up with "Warmth" which ended up being perfect for Flickering Ember. It helps though that most names Ember comes up with aren't going to be serious. She called her chocobo "Warmth" because, well, the chocobo was warm and cuddly. Additionally, "warmth" is a trait she greatly values in general. Her race chocobo is "Good Biscuit." She has a love for food and often thought it was okay to eat chocobos just like any other animal. While she's stopped associating all animals as potential meals, she is secretly hoping that it won't be taboo for her to eventually eat the chocobo. >.> Although, even if that is not the case, the name "Good Biscuit" summons happy thoughts of when she might possibly consume her next meal.

The problem isn't that men don't have enough exclusive outfits. The problem is there is a double standard with clothing that actively discourages and puts down men for doing or looking anything that could be conceivably feminine. There shouldn't be anything gender locked, in my opinion.
