I'm gonna toss in something really important that (in my admittedly brief skimming) I haven't seen anyone else mention yet. I can't respond to your inner thoughts. That's the biggest issue, imo. A player can say all kinds of stuff, even mean and rude stuff (and yes, this happens)(a lot), and I. Can't. Do. Anything. Back. My characters aren't mind readers. As an example, I was rping one day and my rp partner said something. I responded. They then said, "lol, i didn't say that out loud." : | Ok, so I'm just supposed to stand there looking dumb? No thanks. This is not fun. Can someone's inner thoughts being broadcast be funny? Of course! But are you there to roleplay with other people or to just entertain others with your funny commentary? As others have already mentioned, there are many ways to add in body language and expressions, patterns of speech, etc. through your /em text. Example: /em winced as he overhead someone mention a house fire. He rubbed nervously at the burn scars on his arm and seemed to shrink into his seat. There. That's all stuff that other people can actually see on their own and respond to. No inner thoughts about fear, pain, and memories needed.

I thought this would be a late reference to the memes going around for the Stormblood teaser trailer. >..> The show seems a little weird to me cause I'm used to tv shows never referencing a specific product like this (it would be "father and son bond over fictional mmo game"). Is being obvious about a product in a tv show normal in Japan? Or is this just a reallllly long ad for XIV?

You may want to look into the Matron's Reach LS. I think they have a weekly event now too. Could be a good place to get started.

Definitely reach out to people who run tournaments already, whether they are one on one bracket system (Grindstone/Runestone/Resistance tourney), team (Spellguard I think?), continuous like Fight Club, or vs monsters like the Festival of the Hunt and get their advice. Me personally, the simple Grindstone rules are familiar, so I would be less likely to fight in an event that does not use them. (I'm an EST resident whose play time is actually pretty early. Late events, while obviously not as bad for me as they are for EU players, are still a bit rough.)

Has anyone posted to the OF asking the Lore team to clarify? On topic, I have a Xaela who does not really speak Eorzean. I think about any possible weirdnesses in English, grammar and vocab wise (and damn we have a lot) that could potentially trip up someone who is just learning the language. I've used the heck outta "" also. I /try/ to keep it simple, but I'm sure it annoys some folks. It actually led to a bit of character development for me when it occurred to me that Chanar probably was resistant to learning the local language since he didn't want to be there.

Another thing too, briefly mentioned, is that nearly every big game is an mmo now: racing games, definitely all the shooting games, sports games, etc. As far as mmorpgs in the traditional sense... I would guess no really big ones. They may have gone the way of turn-based rpgs (still bitter). I would imagine that F2P ones with flashy gatcha stuff will still be churned out by the bucketload. But who knows, maybe there will be a successful game in the future that uses technology and ideas we haven't even seen yet that builds off of the idea of an mmorpg.
