Disaster! SE just ruined your headcanon!

Recommended Posts

Any time more Hellsguard lore is added, I'm in for a bumpy ride. lol. Hell, I've already had some "well shit" moments when I find a new-to-me tidbit of lore hiding in game.

Otherwise, I think I'm okay since I keep things pretty low-key. Some things that may mess me up: the slave trade does not exist at all, all black mages are inherently good guys, no one can befriend Ala Mhigan refugees, voidsent don't exist any more, trade caravans aren't a thing since all merchants can teleport their goods at will...

SO. I'm bumping this thread. It's been a year, we've had a lot of new people join since then and we KNOW there's a lore book coming down the line. So, fine people of the RPC, I ask you once again:

What's the worst thing SE could make official canon that would disrupt or destroy your current roleplay?

Basically anything to do with the metaphysics of being turned into a Padjal beyond what we already know would mean having to bend backwards to make a six-month long plotline make sense, but otherwise I'm good. Verad is preparing to get mixed up in Ishgardian politics for Reasons, and the move to parliamentary republic is actually more of a boon than a bane.

2 posts above yours, broski. It all remains the same.

Although I might introduce canon Brickman because I'm a dumbass.

If the only villages to exist in Doma were the Ninja guy's (drawing a blank on his name atm), and Doma. That'd effectively kill Yuki and Aoi's village and possibly story. Though I'd just move them adjacent to doma and/or that village mentioned previously.

Or that... Doman hyurs and raen's don't coexist and live in the same villages... Guess it'd be a special snowflake situation were sisterly bonding formed on a battlefield or something...

Most of my stuff works within lore or has something within lore backing it up... There's a few things that could majorly break it, won't say what, but I can find a work-a-round with the stuff SE already has in place. Especially since, as mentioned prior, most of my stuff works within lore...

OH OH! I do have a good one though... It'd hurt a lot of people... Myself included.

ONLY Hyur and Elezen can cross-breed.

Edit:

If the Au Ra really are Dragonborn...

Oh. My. God.

I would have a hayday over this and convince every single Au Ra I see to be singers, lawyers, priests, or general orators and hold sway over EVERYONE!

It would be amazing and you know it.

I would have a field day with this lore... Fun fact; If you ever see me emote Aoi humming, she's humming The Dragonborn Comes most of the time.

The Maelstrom not being the best Grand Company would break my heart :(

In all seriousness though.. I reckon I would just go with the flow. SE is god in this universe and while I definitely cross speculation borders sometime (Kinda inevitable in FFXIV really), I never go outright against something that is black on white fact.

I had a bunch of these but I realized if Square needed to contradict itself to make my headcanon impossible, it might not really qualify for the thread. Instead, I'll put my one totally headcanon idea out there, and dare Square to shoot it down.

There is no way to make mapo tofu in this setting, or a functionally equivalent dish.

Come at me.

Garlemald vassalizing Doma without a fight. I had a lot more but I took at least one line of dialogue to support most of those. However, Square contradicts themselves, and they could always forget Oboro's mention of a struggle.

Some stuff only tangentally related to my character.

There is no indigenous theater in the Far East anywhere.

You cannot prolong aetheric spell effects.

There is nothing beyond the Void.

There are no uncharted islands between Othard and Eorzea, and no refugees ran from Garlean rule before the Rebellion.

A monk's chakra is, in fact, exclusively unique mystical hoo-hah like the Fists claim and not empirically observable aether. Again they'd have to self contradict by backpedaling on Erik's research.

In general I am vague where I need to be and specific where I feel there's text that makes a reasonable case. None of these are irreplaceable plot elements and I have contingencies for all of them in the back of my mind. I won't be bothered by getting contradicted. In situations like these, you simply adapt.

I think the worst thing SE could do is declare something like... Dunesfolk 100% definitely stopped being nomadic 100+ years ago, but even then that wouldn't be too bad, because I already play Shopu's family as the last scions of their culture, given that we're shown exactly zero nomadic Dunesfolk roaming around on the backs of things. If they give an exact date of when adamantoises arrived in Eorzea from Thavnair and it's less than 100 years ago, that would be a much bigger wrench in things

Alternatively, they make Gridania a whole lot less racist than it currently is said and shown to be. That'd derail a couple of my characters a bit, especially Awyrbyrt, whose entire character conflict is that he's basically the equivalent of a first-generation immigrant and wants to be a Roegadyn Wailer (not a Twin Adder guy, but specifically a Wood Wailer)

With the new lorebook on the horizon I forsee a lot of things being overturned for a lot of people. I think my character should be relatively safe...

As long as it doesn't state "Lalafell can't be from Doma" I think I should be good with Chachan. Gogon... well, if they officially hint to Calculators (which I think Arcanists are kind of a spin of anyway so *shrug*) I'd be intrigued... and probably keep going with his own little thing because it's only hinting towards that. And Judge is... Judge.

I think I read somewhere the lorebook is mostly going to be about the monsters? I guess? Which can only be GOOD for my character because he's supposed to know crap about monsters and I hate having to think of monster headcanon. I mean for the most part, for beasts, you can just draw from reality but for voidsent it's like ??? there's bits and pieces of lore here and there.

Either way I'm looking forward to the lorebook.

I am actually having trouble thinking of headcanons of mine they could snap with a well-placed lorebomb. A lot of the handwavey stuff I've put together has been about aetherology, and generally when it comes to aether stuff, SE's approach seems to be "Does it at least loosely fit in to the basic rules and stuff we've used? GOOD ENOUGH, doesn't have to be perfect! Aether can do anything!"

I guess there are a couple bombs they could drop that would give me a headache.

- A sudden major loredrop about mistakes in novice aether use: not likely and would probably mess me up

- Word that, actually, even though Eorzea is steeped in aether, ludicrously few people can even use it to make a sharp thing hit harder. Whatever, we can all be snowflakes.

- SE abruptly decides that Aether Stuff is actually nothing like electrodynamics at all.

It's all stuff that would be a pain in the ass, but wouldn't really cause irreparable damage to my character.

Lore Bomb? On the positive side... a great excuse to reboot or even complementary change your character and shock everyone!

Time to get my shower scene prepared..

I think most of my stuff for public RP is wibbly-wobbly wishy-washy enough that I could make it work without any major retcons or "well sorry guys, can't run this storyline after all" revelations.

My public RP stories were adapted with the purpose of making public RP with people of inevitably slightly differing views on the lore a) possible, b) easy, and c) fun. This means they tend to be relatively flexible in terms of details - so I can fit in with as many different people as it's possible to do so with while still maintaining some sort of core consistency.

Like there's some stuff - almost exclusively backstory detailing stuff - that would have to change with new information on racial history or culture... but that's the kind of stuff that isn't exactly central to the character anyway?

Like, uh. When I say "my Hellsguard is from northern Vylbrand", what I mean is "she's from a relatively isolated community, not geographically close to the main bulk of her race's population; this meant she had to become an adventurer when she fell out with her family, because it's not like she could go and live one valley over with her great aunt's friend".

If it was confirmed tomorrow that there are 100% no Hellsguard on Vylbrand in the last 500 years ever (which is kinda possible, that the lore team could make that decision? I don't think it's been confirmed to the contrary?)... I could just find a different location somewhere slightly aside from Abalathia's Spine that "means" the same thing. It's not vital that she be from that specific location; it's just a(n honestly slightly arbitrary) detail.

Our WoL AU, on the other hand... xDDo you know how difficult it is to write about ~The Warrior Of Light~ in a fanfic and not include at least one headcanon that will be completely overturned the second a developer opens their mouth next? But then, I roleplayed canon characters (in another setting) for 2 years. You sort of get used to rolling with the punches. Or knowing which ones you care about enough to block.

I played it safe with Ave, and mostly my headcanons revolve around ancient Ala Mhigan tribe rituals. And seeming SE gave RPers the freedom to say "Yup, you can create your own clan, you don't have to be of one of the ones we gave you", I don't think its going to turn out to be problem.

But else I will just slap myself on the wrist, and retcon it if need be. Simple as that.

Most (if not all) of what I introduce in my background tries to be directly anchored in lore facts, so... Unless they suddenly start retconning...

I played it safe and went for public/community first, since this is an MMO after all. Stuck as close to the lore as I could so I wouldn't have to retcon in the future. Sure, my character background has been accused of being boring because he's not voidtouched/edgedrk/lastofmykind kind of guy, because of that I've had to avoid 80% of RP that's available to me anyway.

Refugee from Ala Mhigo. Simple, done before, fairly common, very little can go wrong. I'd rather retcon a little than retcon a lot.

Most of what I have for Aurora is rooted in reactions to the MSQ and other things the WoL can only access. Which is a moot point since I;m considering putting that in a Journal divorced from public RP. The Only common detail being that she is from Sharlayan (Hard to retcon without explaining Palpalymo and Krile's involvement with the Scions and the latter being from Val) and a desire to reform the Forum (Particularly by ousting the Bilbiothecs), as well as Ul'Dah (A Task more blatantly Sisyphean) So any particular headcannon I have would be safe unless they involved BLM or went M. Night Shamalan on the Bilbiothecs and revealed them as the good guys.
