Balmung is open!

I just started playing (or attempting to at least), but it seems it's incredibly difficult getting into this server. I figured because I already had a character on Balmung from V1.0, I'd be able to create characters on the server, but apparently not. I thought about just playing on another server and then transfer later, but I discovered they don't accept Paypal anymore, which is my only way of paying. Which means transferring is out of the question.

Is there any other reliable way to get on the server without having to waste weeks of game-time by not playing?

Around half hour/an hour from now is usually when the server opens -- TYPICALLY from Tuesdays to Fridays. You might get lucky on a Monday, but sometimes the weekend scrum spills over and it stays closed. Other than that, anytime the game is down for maintenance, the server opens up right when maintenance opens -- though I never know for how long. Hope that helps, and good luck!

Main reason I want to get in Balmung instead of Gilgamesh is because I already have a character on Balmung, I like to have all characters on one server.

I think I'll wait until tomorrow, and if I can't get in then, just give up on it and join another random server. I rather not pay for a subscription and then sit around waiting for a server to open up.

I suspect people just afk in the game or something!

However if myself (and others waiting to get in) can't get in tomorrow morning, there is an 'expected' maintenance this wednesday, 11 PM to 2 AM, so there's definitely a window before and after that.

This morning I got up early. Balmung wasn't open. But, Gilgamesh finally was. I made a character on Gilgamesh.

QUESTION:  Is Gilgamesh just as good? Or should I continue to hold out for Balmung? (come wednesday, I can transfer a character to there)

Gilgamesh... Well, none of them like these forums for some reason. There is some sort of 'distaste' for the forums over there, and we have no idea what they use instead. I tried finding rp on gilgamesh, and was unable to. So I would STILL recommend Balmung, but tis up to you.

I think I remember someone mentioning they're a bit more closer-knit RP community, so maybe they have their own forums? Any Gilgies around that can shed some light on this?

Couldn't say. I haven't been on Gilgamesh, and a lot of the folks I RP with are on Balmung, so I'm a little biased. :(

Ultimately, I say feel around on Gilgamesh first since you have the character there. See if you can find some RP you enjoy there. If you don't, then see about sneaking over an alt to get a feel for Balmung before hopping over. That way Gilgamesh gets a chance to have some more RPers join their numbers, and you don't spend cash unnecessarily for the transfer.

So, stay with Gilgamesh or wait go to Balmung? Is Balmung that worth it community-wise?

No one can really answer that for you, the people who play on Gilgamesh will obviously say Gilgamesh is better, and the people who play on Balmung will obviously say that Balmung is better. Anyone who plays on both will just give you a non-answer, like "both have their merits and flaws" or something like that.

It's up to you to decide whether it's worth the wait for the server to open, or to just move on to Gilgamesh.

It is a common misconception that the server lock is related in any way to people being online at any given time; it's not. The server automatically locks down when the simultaneous log-ins in the lobby server reach a certain peak.

It doesn't matter how many are already in the game and whether they are active or AFK. What matters is those attempting to log-in while you are creating your character. Remember that log-in from characters that already are registered in the game (meaning, those who haven't just been created and have yet to see the first cutscene) do not get any server lock, so they have priority over those who have to step on Balmung on the first time. That's why transferring characters do not get any server lock (except of course the specific Legacy > Non Legacy transfer, but that's for a different reason, not the lobby server).

I know it sucks, but sadly our current lobby server is very cheap, and SE already said that upgrading any hardware (and thus giving us nifty things such as extra character data, which translates in more inventory, more details, more customizations, more hairstyles, bycolor dyeing etc. in the case of game servers, and less DCs/more log ins in the case of lobby server) is the last possible resort they want to look at.

Well, the short time I've played around on Gilgamesh, I did meet a few nice folks who simply private msg'd me out of the blue simply because I was new or had asked a question about warrior vs paladin.

My experience on Gilgamesh has surpassed my expectations. I'm sure it's a great server and some great communties are there to become a part of.

However, Balmung is still in the back of my mind. Either I will stick witH Gilgamesh or pay to transfer on Wednesday to Balmung. Problem is, I'm still not sure what I will decide...

If you found some nice people on Gilgamesh, don't just give them up!

I still strongly push for trying to sneak a fresh alt onto Balmung first rather than just transferring your character over. Get a feel for the place first and compare the two yourself. Then, and only then, if you feel that Balmung is a better fit should you make the transfer.

Hmm, perhaps you should make a personal thread regarding your indecision so folks can help you with your decision so as to not bumping the thread used to notify others of Balmung's character creation status? :D If you do, I'll put my two cents in there, otherwise this is a tweensy bit off topic and keeps making me think [when I'm tired enough] that Balmung might actually be open haha

Ahh, that does make quite a bit of sense. I was under the impression that the number of people on the server at any given time was the cause for the character creation being locked out, mostly because people I ask would always respond with "Try at 4 AM, there's less people on then!" So I had assumed that it was in relation with people just staying in the game.

Why wouldn't SE upgrade the lobby server? That doesn't seem like it'd be that big of a deal to do. (Though I don't actually know anything about the company or their business, so I probably sound really dumb.)

In an unrelated matter, It's almost 3 AM, time to hope I get into Balmung.

Edit: 7 AM. Didn't get it. Drat.

Because it means a prohibitive cost (wanted to say large, but if they're running on that kind of outdated hardware I'd say it wouldn't be that bad a cost), a long ass maintenance and in so far as SE is concerned, they don't care where you play the game so long as you play it.

Keep in mind that this is for what they view as a minor problem. It's a pain for us because we want to get onto a particular server, but their answer to that question will always be pick another one.

EDIT : If you want to get onto Balmung, next window is Maintenance. I'll probably wait until next to 2 AM my time tonight and see if I can't get two alts made.

EDIT MOAR : People just AFK in the game either through forgetfulness or as a misguided attempt to avoid 30 seconds to 2 minutes of waiting when there's a queue during primetime.
