If you can, maybe ask someone who is fluent in Japanese for some help? There are nuances to the language that may not show up in a simple Google search (I'm sure you've gone deeper than Google, but it gets the point across). Especially when talking about older forms of a language. And like was suggested above, maybe your character got tired trying to explain/help others pronounce the given name correctly, so goes by a nickname in 'foreign lands' - if you can't find a Japanese version of, say "Dragon Fang" you like, then just use the English words.

It depends how closely you're adhering to game mechanics and calling it lore. Realistically, anyone can pick up any weapon and swing it around. But for the sake of game balance each profession is limited to what they can wield. The classes were given specific names and lore behind them, but that only covers Eorzea (and the East for a few). "Gladiator" and "Paladin" are names for very specific training styles taught in Ul'dah. But that doesn't mean they are the ONLY way to learn how to use a sword & shield. After all, people have been using these weapons and techniques for centuries, if not eons. What we know today grew out of styles that had been passed down and spread across the lands a long, long time ago. Do you think, say, bandits or Garleans go into Ul'dah to become Gladiators before going back to their regular lives? Of course not. The lore you get from each class as you level them up rarely makes sense on a larger scale. For example, how could there be so many White Mages running around, when the lore makes it clear the tradition was kept within an exclusive circle, and the player represents the first and ONLY outsider it's been taught to? Sometimes you just have to know when to ignore the lore.

True, adventurers are not 'average' people - but the 'average' person serves as a baseline. Take my characters for example - none of them have traveled beyond Eorzea yet IC. 95% of what they know about Au Ra comes from the actual Au Ra they've met, who have mostly been pretty decent folk. Sure, they've heard the rumors and stories, but they judge others from actual experience not hearsay. Just like with Duskies, or Moonies, or whatever - from experience, most of them are decent folk who just want a comfortable life. So my characters are not prejudiced against any Au Ra, because they have no reason to be! Simple as that. I'm not saying others should or should not have prejudices, but if they do it should make sense for the character to have it. Remember, it's only been mere months since SB came out, and major contact with the East opened up (and with the official timeline being so compressed, it may have only been mere weeks, officially) - and before that, even among adventurers, not much was known by most people from Eorzea.
-
Here's one point I do wonder about - just how much DOES the average Eorzean know about Dotharl, or Xaela, or even Au Ra in general? Can someone who has never seen Au Ra till they started showing up in Eorzea be able to tell the difference between them? Even if someone hears Dotharl talking in their native tongue, would that person know what they are hearing? Prejudice and bigotry tends to cover a wide blanket over an entire population, rather than selecting a very specific segment of it. But how much WOULD people be prejudiced against Au Ra, or a specific segment of them? Let's be honest, for a lot of people they would see horns and scales and it would be more "Oh yeah, I heard about them. Uh, maybe we should avoid them," and stop there, not even bothering to get any details. Some probably couldn't even tell the difference between the tribes, it's all just foreign words to them.

That's fine when it's some Xalea about to fight each other, but that's not the issue here. The issue is others provoking Xaela. How does the 4th respond then? Do they immediately pick a side, or try to understand the situation first? If it's clear the Xaela were being provoked do you make everyone leave the city, or just the provokers? How you respond is as important as the fact that you did respond in the first place. And yes, I did see the link to your handbook, but this is a response to your response. Plus, the handbook wasn't loading on the basic wi-fi on the ferry I ride home. Then why not make somewhere else an RP hub? Talk it over with your friends and pick a spot, and start RPing there. Spread the word that there's a place where fellow Xaela can go, and keep spreading it (idea: hand out 'flyers' in tells, so only fellow Xaela get it). Ul'dah may be THE hub, but it doesn't have to be the ONLY hub. It may take a little work, but in the end it may be worth it. Plus, it may encourage RP in general to spread out a bit.

Maybe? But I think it's more likely a chicken or dodo, with pheasant feathers for decoration (those certainly do not look like turkey feathers). To more directly answer the question - I don't think there are turkeys in Eorzea... but they may exist somewhere on the world of Hydaelyn, most likely in the New World.
-
One more thought - in trying to keep things IC, if something like the lone Miqo comes over and starts with the hatred, send a tell pointing out - "Your character seems to think we're violent savages. We outnumber you four to one. We're armed. Would your character REALLY approach and provoke them?" Obviously, I just made up the "four to one", substitute the correct number as needed. Anyway, it SHOULD make the other player/character realize that what they're doing is stupid, and potentially risking their very life! Also think, how WOULD your characters react? Not you the player, your characters. Obviously you don't want trouble, but trouble is coming to you. If the above didn't work, then how about having your characters glare at the provoker, say something like, "Hey, we're minding our own business. Go away and mind yours." And maybe remind the other player that their character is risking a world of hurt if they don't stop. And if the provoker insists on getting punched in the face, do it! And if they complain, point out you were acting IC, just like they were, and if they can't take IC consequences then they shouldn't have started anything in the first place. Diffusing the situation SHOULD be the first, and second, and even third option. But if all else fails, maybe it's time to say 'okay, if you insist, here it comes!' And if you're really, really, lucky, it might even lead to a fun street brawl.
-
I can understand if people are acting IC, but once it crosses over to making people upset OOC, then it may be time to respond OOCly. Let them know that you're tired of being harassed all the time, without rest, that you are not enjoying the game (and it IS a game, and games are supposed to be fun). And most of all, be polite about it! If you're polite you're more likely to get a positive response. It's not that you can't handle some prejudice, it's just that you don't want it ALL the time. Sure, some will complain with things like, 'it's just RP,' or, 'you shouldn't play X if you don't want to be treated like this.' If they won't relent, block them. They're basically trolling you at that point, and the best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them. Other options would be - can you find another area to RP? Maybe Limsa, or even some other area of Ul'dah? Maybe find some allies who are willing to stand up for your characters? I hope you find a solution that works for everyone.

Weird, not sure why the link didn't work the first time. Let me try again!

Hiya. Welcome to the world of RP. Make a few good friends and it's worth it! For semi-random RP it can be worth keeping an eye out for events. For some odd reason hardly any Mateus events are posted, so it's best to keep an eye on Discord, link info here: https://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/topic/20339-mateus-calendar-rp-discord-bot/ And if you see a Tregarde running around (Katarina, Moire or Luludja) feel free to grab my attention.
-
Hi, Naya. Hopefully we cross paths before you move to Omega. I'm not scary either... silly, yes (especially when I'm on Moire, she's very silly).

So I got my RP identity stolen by this guy...
Tregarde replied to Xihsa'li Tayuun's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Having read through this thread... I am so sorry you've had to go through this. The whole situation makes no sense, what could possibly motivate someone to do this? Couldn't the copycat have found a better way to use their time and energy? At least we're warned, and now I know to avoid this person if we cross paths on Mateus (and even warn others if I see them engaging). Hopefully SE does something about it before too long. -
Keeping Pregnant/New Parent Characters Involved and Interested
Tregarde replied to Vas's topic in RP Discussion
Being pregnant and having children doesn't mean being excluded from RP. In fact, these can be good sparks for RP! Just look at history, plenty of women have continued to do crazy things well into their pregnancy. That doesn't mean they should, but it's happened. Of course, in a world like Eorzea, a pregnant woman runs huge risk of losing the child if she goes adventuring into a dungeon or such. One could RP being a woman who has to be told when it's time to stop for the good of the child (whether the woman listens is another matter). Also, there's no reason why a pregnant couple can't still spend time with friends. They can still go to taverns, guild halls, events, etc. Oh sure, some places may be 'a little rough', but why should that stop them from going? You think everyone just suddenly stops doing what they like just because there's a bun in the oven? And once the child or children are born, again, that doesn't mean their social lives are over! They can still go place, still go on adventures. Sometimes they may need a babysitter (whether an NPC, or RP'd out), but other times they can bring the kids along. You can have feeding time, changing diapers, crying, tantrums, people getting all cutsey... all sorts of RP when the kids are around. Instead of thinking how pregnancy limits a character, think of the opportunities for RP! Think of how it can be incorporated, not only in their lives, but in the lives of those around them. -
Instead of a direct answer, I’ll give a round-a-bout answer (but it’s all on the topic, really). Way back when, I was a fan of the Ultima series, and so when Ultima Online happened I naturally had to play it. It was the first MMORPG to hit it big, and a lot of things were new. Just starting out I had made a few characters, and while the gameplay was fun, something just wasn’t ‘clicking’ with me. I’m a role player, but the role just wasn’t happening. Then I decided to try something really different, and made a female character. I don’t know what it was, but something on this character clicked. She just worked. A history and ideas just started flowing. Being a long time Ultima fan, I already knew the lore of the world, which helped. She had a personality, motives, she made friends (and a couple enemies). Details of her life would often pop into my head out of nowhere. More than once I’d look at something I’d just typed and wondered where that came from. And thus was the Tregarde legacy born. As you may have guessed by now, I am not a woman in real life. People playing characters of a different gender is common today. But back then, it was not. Sometimes drama would break out OOC when people found out the player behind a character was not what they thought. And I’ll admit at first I very carefully chose how I phrased certain details of myself so I didn’t say what I was either way. After all, I had come to consider many of those people friends, and I didn’t want to lie to them, but it did take a while before I felt comfortable being entirely open. And apparently I was doing something right, because many thought I really was a woman from my RP. But as time went on, the acceptance grew. More people were RPing characters of a different gender, more were open about themselves behind the keyboard. But there was still one more stigma to get through when my character realized she and another woman were falling in love. It was just something that happened, over many months of RP, first becoming friends, then best friends, then realizing there was even more. But it was something we knew our characters would not be ashamed of, and so we were not either. But there were tensions at first, most notably the second in command of my guild at the time clearly did not like it (though he did soften up after a while). And to this day I’m still in touch with that other roleplayer (who happens to be a woman, not that it matters). Since UO I’ve spent time in Lineage 2, EverQuest 2, Guild Wars 1 & 2 and dabbled in several other MMOs. In every one I make a Tregarde (or two, or three). Most of my characters are women. In single player games that allow choice, I will certainly play through as a woman (at least the first time). If a game has a female protagonist, that’s a plus in my book. I don’t know why. I’ve long since stopped asking why. And in real life, I don’t care what you identify as. All I care about is if you’re a good person. Your character can be a total [censored], but I can keep IC and OOC separate.

Wanting to throw together a Street Fortune Teller/Herbalist
Tregarde replied to Vhah's topic in Character Workshop
Thankfully for you, someone was asking about herbs here not long ago. The links in it may help. Also, it may help to look up herbalism and folklore in the real world too - it's really quite facinating and can only help your RP (all I know on the subject is from books, I'm not sure what the good web sites are) https://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/index.php?/topic/20854-herbs-list/ -
I've now played through the AAR storyline 3 times (why do I have this need for alts?), and one thing that confuses me is how much of a secret the Scions of the Seventh Dawn were. They have a 'secret base' and talk about working clandestinely to keep from Garlean eyes, etc. And yet.. just about everybody seems to know who they are. The Grand Companies send representatives to their "secret" base. They do nothing to hide their identities - just how many times has an NPC gone "Oh, you're with the Scions? Here, let me help you", not just to The Hero but also any other Scions with The Hero? Heck, half the time people recognize The Hero even before introductions are made. During my first run I kept wondering how long till the Garleans found their base, because they sure didn't do much to hide it. Really, even a half competent spy network could have easily followed the Scions around (not to mention the Ascians following the Hero). It really wasn't a question of if, but when. After Ultima Weapon was defeated, it's clear that the Scions are more well known (though by how much I don't know yet, only just started those quests). But before then, just how much of a secret were they? How much would the average citizen have known? Or is this just one of those bits of lore that has more contradictions than answera, and it's best to just shrug and say "whatever"?

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Tregarde replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Oh, I don't know... that could be fun... with a group of friends, saying "wouldn't it be funny to do a dungeon in swim suits?" just for the laughs. But yeah, not something you want to spring on a PUG. -
Hello, and welcome to the community. Since you said you're making a new character for RP, I can make some suggestions where to start. In NA Balmung is currently closed off, and there is no telling if/when it may have a window open again. Mateus has become the default secondary NA RP server, and has a very active population. Omega is the main EU RP server. Mateus and Omega may become temporarily unavailable during peak hours, just wait till a less congested time and try again. RP can be found on other servers, but the communities are smaller (but hey, sometimes they can make up in quality what they lack in quantity). Wherever you decide to make your home, hope you enjoy your return to Eorzea.

[Balmung] Looking for RP Friends/Partners/Shenanigans!
Tregarde replied to Rhenasia's topic in Chronicled Connections
Oh. Oops. I often use the "Latest Threads" box (lower left side of the home page) to see what's new, which doesn't show tags. You should still come to Mateus. *waves around a cookie* -
[Balmung] Looking for RP Friends/Partners/Shenanigans!
Tregarde replied to Rhenasia's topic in Chronicled Connections
Awesome! My girls are not rich, even with their wealth combined, but maybe we can work out a payment plan? That sounds even better than mansions. Dance, massages, chocolate... I bet Rhen and at least one of the Tregardes would get along. There's just the wee matter of which server you're on. I bet it's Mateus, right? I know Balmung is the trendy place to be, but we have the best cookies on Mateus. -
Runestone/Invitational/Magic Tournaments in general
Tregarde replied to Laciel's topic in RP Discussion
I think this thread has made it clear that there are some people who like an 'anything goes' magic tournament, and many who prefer a strict adherence to lore. On something like this, you're not going to be able to find a middle-ground that pleases everyone. So my suggestions are: 1- Figure out what kind of tournament you want - freestyle or strict - and stick with it. Or even do separate events and alternate between the two. If one proves to be unpopular, then you don't need to continue it. And by 'unpopular' I mean in attendance, not what people say on forums, discord, etc. The idea is to be fun for those who DO show up, not for those who do not. 2- Figure out what the rules for what is acceptable and not acceptable. Even in the 'anything goes' category, there are limits to what magic can do. A good way to limit some things is to say the spell requires too much time and/or preparation to be useful in a duel. And when you make a rule, stick with it and enforce it! 3- When you post/advertise it, make it very clear what you doing, what the rules are, and what people should expect. That way, when people do show up, they should have no reason to complain. 4- Don't be afraid to ask for people's input and ideas before making final decisions. Events based around magic can be fun, It can be wonderful seeing the creative ways people come up with to utilize magic - the game provides us with a framework, and we can build on that framework. -
New to roleplaying in FFXIV, have a question about ninjas
Tregarde replied to Aeva's topic in RP Discussion
And that's when you say "Actually, according to Sounsyy..." and send them the link. That should shut them up. =P It seems like there is some good in-game support for your character concept. It's just the fine details that need a little polish. And may I suggest possibly using the word "freelancer" to describe her? Of course "sellsword" and "mercenary" work also, but I kinda like freelancer for some reason. -
New to roleplaying in FFXIV, have a question about ninjas
Tregarde replied to Aeva's topic in RP Discussion
I guess a lot would depend on how your character thinks of herself. Does she think "I'm a Ninja!" or does she think "I'm someone who is sneaky and good with blades?" In other words, is she a Ninja (capital N), trained in a specific eastern martial art - or a highly skilled rogue who just happens to know very similar skills? By game mechanics, we can learn every profession available, and every new one when it is introduced in game. Of course, this isn't realistic, no one can master all those different skills. Also, the lore behind many Jobs is such that only a single player on the whole server would know that skill-set (for example, the White Mage is a way reserved exclusively to the Pradjal and the player represents the first outsider they have ever taught it to). Therefore the Classes and Jobs are more of a guideline in RP. For example, by game mechanics my Katarina is a Paladin. But in-character she's no such thing, she never trained to be one of the Sultansword. Likewise, she was never a Gladiator, fighting in the arena for the entertainment of Ul'dah. She's a warrior who uses a sword and shield and tries to protect others in battle. She's also somewhat decent with her fists (pugilist by game mechanics) though hardly a master of unarmed combat. 'Guardian' would be a more accurate word to call her. I'm not too up on Ninja lore in FF14, but the stereotypical ninja is someone skilled in espionage and assassination. Your description of your character makes her sound too honest for such work. If she " wouldn't use her skills for anything illegal", then what would she use them for? Would some other word than 'ninja' be more accurate? Not saying you shouldn't have your character call herself a Ninja, just saying you should think about it, and about some alternatives. Either way, I'd still RP with you.
